Miss Ada Tesman ‘Will sing her sweet songs. —— MERTING OF THE AMERICAN COLONIZATION Socin1y.—The anvuiversary of the American Golonization Society, which has now been in operation for over 4d” years, was held at the Presbyterian church, on 4 street, last evening, which was well filled by ladies and gentlemen, there being representatives trom nearly every loyal State prese: Hon. J. H. B. Latrobe, of Baltimore, pre- sided and called the meeting to order: Rev. Howard Malcoln, D. D., of Philadelphia, lead- ing in prayer. xtracts of the report of the Secretary were read by Mr. Carpenter. The report aliudes to the decease of five of the officers and members of the society in feeling terms, viz: Hon. Edw. Everett, Hon. Wm. L. Dayton, Prof. Beajimin Silliman, Hon. J. C. Hornblower and Solomon Sturges, Esq. The financial condition of the Society is very Satisfactory, the receipts during the year (in- cluding the balance in the treasury of last year) being $91,154 73 and the disbursements $&9,- 931 45. Owing te the failure of emigrants a surplus of $35,000 has been inyested in U. S. bonds. The war bas diminisbed the receipts, but at the same time reduced the expenditure by di- verting those who might hiveotlered as emi- grants intothearmy. During the year 23emi- grants only have been sent te Liberia from the different States, as follows :—Massachusetts, 2; Pennsylvania, 10; New York, 7; Illinois, 4. ‘They were mostly well educated, two clergy- men and Prof. M. H. Freeson, a native of Ver- roont, 8 graduate of Middlebury Oollege, in Leonora,” Signora Filstoff | the class of "19, who went out as a professor elect in Liberia College. Several hundred colored persons on the Island of Barbadoes are anxicus to make Li- beria their home. They have an agent now in this country to interest this society in their be- half. The directors haye the matter under consideration, not having yet been able to set- tle what they should do in thecase. The col- ored people are represented as intelligent. The legislature of Liberia has not only appropri- ated $4,000 to aid these and other emigrants trom the West India Islands. but has increased the land grant to twenty-five acres for each head of a family. ‘The native population sround the little Re- public are fast becoming christianized, and marked encouragement is furnished from this direction, The most encouraging results have Tewarded the efforts to civilize the four thou- sand cargo Atricans liberated in Liberia from slaye ships, and they are already becoming useful President Warner was inaugurated January 4, 1864, “in the midst of universal rejoicings.” fn athenieum has recently been organized at Monrovia for the intellectual improvement of the young men of thatcity. A convention of teachers and others had been held, occupying three days in discussions on the qualifications of teachers and modes of instruction, and re- sulting in the formation of a National lnstitute of Instruction. Sweden, Norway, Netherlands and Hayti have in the year made friendly treaties with Liberia, and that with Hayti recognizes the slave trade as piracy, and stipulates for its punishment as such. Hon. Abraham Hanson, previously Com- mercial Agent, was in February last received by the Liberian Government as Consul Gen- eral from the U.S.,and Rev. John B. Kinney, previously Consul General, was in May last received as Charge d Affaires by our Govern- ment. The affairs of L:beria College are alluded to, and itis reported in a heaithy condition, and without doubt, a success. The report reters to the great efforts of the Liberian Governmentin importing every thing tending to develope the resources of the coun- try and to advance civilization, and speaks of the fine quality of sugar, coffee and cotton which has been sent to market during the past year, and closes by stating that there is no doubt that the numbers who in the next 50 years settle in the new country, will out- number, by far, the entire numoer brought from Africa as slaves. : Senator Dootittle, of Wisconsin, was intro- duced, and spoke of the advantages of Liberia and its growth. It had alreadv done more to put down the slaye trade than probably the United States and England combined. He believéd that within 50 years the little Repub- lic would grow largely, and would be the cen- tral power in Africa. The emigration of those brought from Africa to the new republic will be immense. He believed that when this war was over large numbers of the white soldiers now in service will remain in the South. Africa, he maintained, was for the Ethiopians, and they ‘were superior to the Caucasian in the tropics. Mr. Doolittle closed by saying that the news that had been received of the capture of Fort Fisher and the closing of the last port of the Tebels, was glorious, and the crushing yictery which is to close this rebellion is now at hand. Rey. Dr. S. H. Cox, of New York, was intro- duced, and made a good address on the subject of colonization. Hon. G. Washington Warren, of Massachu- setts, arose and in some feeling remarks an- nounced the death of Hon. Edward Everett, who was one ef the vice presidentsof the So- clety. Mr. Everett, twelye years ago, while Secretary of State during Mr. Fillmore’s Ad- ministration, had delivered an able address before the Society, and he was one of the best friends of colonization in the country. He of- fered resolutions of respect to the memory of the deceased. Dr. Peter Parker, of this city, seconded them, bearing testimony to the yirtves of the de- ceased; andthey were unanimously adopted —_—_»___ A Mvsicat, Literary anv SocraL LEVER. Monday night, 2 company of ladies and gen- tlemen assembled in the rooms of the Young Men’s Ubristian Association, on 7th street, near E street, to inaugurate a system of meetings for the interest and improvement of all those who may attend. it was intended to begin the series some Weeks ago, but circumstances prevented the inauguration until last night. The only dis- advantage under which the society will labor is the size of the hal}, which is much too smail for the audience that would like toattend At 7 o'clock tne hall was well filled with ladies and gentlemen, among them some of the older and formerly most active of the Association, who appear to be again coming up to the work of the young christians. ‘The meeting was called to order by Captain Beardsley, apd opened with eperceriate prayer by Mr. W.A. Thompson. The choirot the Georgetown Bridige-street Church was resent, and performed a piece of sacred music n fine style, accompanied by a melodeon. Then followed a brief bnt very interesting essay on “Festal Days,” by Mr. George May Powell. Next a lady sang, in fine style, a very beauti- ful piece “A debate ensued upon the question, “Should a strictly educational qualification of Yeading and writing the English language be required for the elective franchise!” The dis- cussion was principally between Messrs. J. S. Slater and J. J. McDuffie in the affirmative and Messrs. B. F. Winslow and E.G. W. Hall in the negative, Mr. Beard participating at the close’ The arguments were very creditable to the gentlemen engaged, and the pleasure of the evening was not spoiled by a decision of the question. A gentleman performed a soloip a very excellent manner; after which Hood's beautiful poem, «The Haunted Ffouse,” was read by Mr. Grinnell, (Chief Clerk of the De- partment of Agriculture,) in astyle that elicited the applause of the company. It being near time to clese the meeting, the thanks of the company were voted to the la- dies and gentiemen of the choir. The Ohair then annoanced thy programme for the next meeting two weeks hence, viz: Essay on arts of design, by Mr. H. W. Tilley. Reading by Mr. Bucknall. Debste—Shouid attendance of children at school be made com- pulsory by law? Disputants—Messrs. J. C. (Clayton and R. C. Besson in the affirmative; Henry Beard and J.T. Brown, negative. For the meeting three weeks hence: Essay by Mr. G. B. Patch. Debate between Messrs. O. C. Wigbt, R. W. Fenwick, E.H Knight and G. W. Hartley. Beading by Mr. W. A. Thompson. The company passed a few moments pleas- Sntly, and separated with the intention of en- joying those evenings which can be done with- out the formality of cards of admission. ele eS Larceny —Josephere Chapman was ar- Tested for stealing two dollars from Martin Root. Root testified that he went to DeLacy’s restaurant with the accused, gave her a dol- lar to get something to drink, counted the money, and knew that he had over twelve dol- lars lett; went to Josephine’s room to bed, and awaking saw Josephine standing by his pants, with his pocket-book in her hand. She gave him the pocket-book, but she had taken two dollars. Josephine admitted taking the two dollars, and Justice Beswell held her to bail for court. THE WEISENFELD TRIAL.—The Militar: Commission on F street, of whick Major Gene eral Doubleday is president, yesterday, after recess, continued the case of Moses Weisenfeld.’ & Co., when the following evidence was pro- duced: Lewis Seldner, clothier, Washington, D. O., Was sworn, and testified that J. Hecht came to see him, stated he understood that witness was not friendly to Weisenfeid & Oo., but was of-a different opinion, he thinking witness was friendly to the accused, and wished to know if witness could not do something through Woreeley to have the prisoners released, as he believed that witness had some influence with the authoritges. He called: afterwards, and stated that he had paid Worseley $2,500, and put into the hands of witness $5,000 in 5-20 bonds, to be used in bribing the judge advocate. He called afterwards, and said that they were willing to pay $2,500 or $5,000 more, in case the matter could be prevented from going to trial. Witness after this met Weisenfeld at his store | Cc in Washington, when he told witness that any- thing that Hecht would do would be approved by him. Cross-examined-—Has lived in Washington two years, and has known Woreeley for about seven months, he baying bought large amount of goods at the store of witness.
