Reported Death ot Hood and Forrest_The Rumor net Confirmed—Story ef Price's Death Denied—Late Intelligence from Charleston—The * Sitaatien” in Savan- herman’s ‘‘Conciliatory Pelicy’’— tures Abeut his e—500Bale e tton Destroy ed—t Three H dred Slaves. Richmond papers of January 6 furnish the following items: AvousT4, Jan. 4.—Kilpatrick has not crossed the Altamaha, bat fs sappesea to be on the Carclina cide of the Savannah River. Weatern Virginia papers report that Forrest Bas been killed by one of hisown men. A Yankee raid en the Mobile and Obio railroad tore up miles of the track uear Ve- rone. 2 A private letter says that General Price is nor dead. tis currently reported here that General Hood is dead. From Charlesten. CuaRrzEsTon, January 5.—No further move- ments of the enemy &re reported to-day. His forces are still concentrating, and are assem- bling between Hardeeville and the Savannah river. There is notrath in theirreported ad- yance on Grahameville. Unconfirmed Reports. The reported deaths of Generals Hood and Forrest are not confirmed. From Savannah. Fzom Savannah we learn that General Sher- Man is pursuing a very conciliatory order to- wards the people of Savannah, and has issued & proclamation permitting planters to bring in their produce as usual. and holds out induce- ments for them todoso. This looks as ifhe felt perfectly secure, and meantto make all the friends he could. The Uharleston Mercury understands that Sherman bas given the citizens of Savannah filteen Gays to settle up their bark and other accounts, which are to be balanced in Corfede- rate Treasury notes. If this really is true, there will be but few open accounts in Sayan- nah, after the fifteen days of grace expire. Everybody and everybody’s relations will be eager to syuare up at once. The Rival Tennessee Armies. General Hood being now safely across the Tennessee beyond all doubts, we await with some interest detaits of his future motions. Thomas will endeavor, by all practicable means, to prevent him, it possible, but delay him at all events from proceeding to Charles- ton, or any other point in the prospective line of Sherman's mazch. Whether it be the object of Hood to march to the defence of Charleston remains to beseen. Ifsuchis his determing ation, we may anticipate more severe fightin - between the rival armies of Tennessee. Mean- while Sbermsn’s march northward from Sa- vannah does not appear to be making vers rapid headway. Pomibly the weather hay been unpropitious, or other and more Impor- @tant causes have combined to impede his ad- vance upon Charlesten. We hear nothing of interest from that quarter. A despatch of the ith says : * The city of Savannah continnes quiet. An order has been issued not to cut the shade trees for fuel. Sherman proposes to bring wood by the Gulf railroad.” The 14th and i5th ¢orps are in entrench- ments, reaching from Savannah near tothe Plank road. The Yankees are building a new pontoon bridge opposite the exchange. Many negroes who joined Sherman in the country are leaving. The roads are lined with them. Sherman is giving levees to the negroes in Savannad. Severnl Federal steamers are engaged re- Moving obstractions from the river. About three hundred negroes were sold in Angusta, on Tuesday, atauction, at anaverage of from three thausand to three thousand fiye Bundred dollars each. Several buitdings and five hundred bales of cotton were burned in Albany, Georgia, last Tuesday, by an incendiary. From Texas. The yellow fever has entirely subsided at Galveston and Houston. General Kirby Smith has impressed tobacco for the use of the army. From the Trans-Mississippi. Everything was quiet inthe trans-Missie- sippi. No Yankees south of the Arkansas river. The condition ofour (the rebel) army was fine. The troops are well clothed and fed. eee BICHMOND DATES TO JANUARY 7. Sherman reported Advan Announced—A Fight wi ers—Gen. Hillen reute ‘¢ Galvanized Yankees’? inthe Ran Terngdo in Middle Alabama—immense Damage Done—Union Prisoners Re- ceiving Blankets. Richmond papers of the 7th inst. contain the following items: “Mopite Jan. 5.—A raid is reported ad- Vancing south towards Smithfield, twenty miles north of Aberdeen. The destruction of property is gnnknown. It is also reported that Gen. Hood's army bas crossed the Tennessee river, and is moving*on Tupelo. {t will prob- ably be the tutmre base of operations. The Fort Gaines prisoners are expected to arrive 3m this city to-day from western North Caro- lina.” We learn,” says the Raleigh Confederate of the 3d instant, iat on the 2d of Decembera fight took piace at Shoemaker’s Gap between Capts. N. Price’s, Rozse’s ard Gotrell’s com- panies and some deserters, tories and robbers. They attacked our forces from ambush, but were speedily routed and severely chastised. They lost fourteen killed, four wounded, and four were taken prisoners. We lost none in killed or wounded. The woods were fired du- ring the engagement, which caused the dis- charge of a considerable number of guns which bad been thrown away by the enemy. Capt. Price was in command of the’ battalion, and distinguished himself by coolness and bravery, as did his centire command.” The Colombia Oarolinian says: «General D. H. Hill passed down the South Carolma railroad yesterday, under erders to Teport to General Beauregard at Oharleston.” ‘he Rebel notices the arrival at Selma, Als., on the 20t) ult., of a detachmentof four or five bBundred galvanized Yankees, under the charge of Captains Clark and Rice and Adjutant Sey- monr, ef the i0th Tennessee, on their way to the front. They are, says the Rebél,sirong, able- bodied soldiers, mostly foreigners, embracing almost every European nationality, with only a slight mixture of genuine Yankees. Captain Clarke informs us that almost any number could have been obtained, but thatonly thcse ‘were accepted who had no families in the North and few ties to attach them to that section. They will be distributed through the [rish regiments of the army ef Tennessee, and fill up their depleted ranks, «Reports of Sherman having crossed the Sa- vannah are confirmed. He is believed to be moving on Grahamsyille.” “A Yankee raid on the Mobile and Ohio rail- road tore up miles of the track near Verona.” “A vioient tornado passed over middle Ala- bama December 27, killing fifteen persons, de molishing a large number of houses, destroying the railroad bridge on the Montgomery and West Point railroad, twenty miles east of Montgomery, &c, The amount of damage done Was immense.” “Av the baitie of Franklin, the Missouri | brigade went into the fight 688 strong, and had 109 killed, 242 wounded, and 96 captared, make ing @ loss of 447.
