‘THE EVENING STAR. “Now, Kay. seriously, you are not vexed with me? You yourself would have been the firet to bid me go.” Far down below the precipitous ledges of the mountain path the valley seemed to swim in mists of gold, while bere and there, among the overhanging trees, a deep-dyed sumaca tossed its crest of crimson plumes in the spicy air of mid October, and the coal red berries of the dogwood glowed lize burniag coaisin the | tangled wildernesses of the woods. It wis a very pretty back-ground for wood nymp 2 or bomedryad, and Rachel Martin’s attitude was unconsciousiy rustic as she played with | the wild blue asters that covered her littte -asik- etofhickoyy u ules, epoils from the greotol tree yeoe giant branches overtopped the whoie joreet. She was pinmp and pretty, with round won- dering blue eyes and a mouth like a magnified cranbemry, while the roces on her cheek seemed to come ang go with eyery breath she drew, and the faint touches of sunshin? ow her brow gave edditional charm to her frash, rustic beauty. Mark Dong!as leaned over the twis!- ed heech-reot that sepurated them, and tried to take the brown hand in his, but it was drawn away wi h decided quickness, “Kay, dearest!” Ab, he cid not see the blood mantling to her ch. ek under the envious shadows of the atro- cious “Shaker bennet’’—be did not hear the quick, stormy throbbing ef the petuiaat heart. « Dearest,” indeed! When Keziah Traman’s bean never so much as went to Boston with- oul asking Der leave, and Oharley Jenkins had distincUy sntimated thatthe whole programme of bis iuture existence was to be indicated solely by Martin’s wish. Yes it was all very well for Captain Mark to stay at home, offici- ating in the Home Guard department; she liked the uniform, and didn't object to the martialeclst. Buttogodownamong therebels withoutso much as consulting her inclination, the spoiled beauty thought ‘hat was altogether a different thiag. “I see you arein no mood to discuss this mati r impartially just now, Rachel,” Captain Mlaik said, gravely, “I bad thought, I had Doped te find yeu differently.” “in no mood!’ Rachel colored hot scarlet. law books! I didn’t stop to investigate very closely, however; it was my interestto roll tne barre! down hill as fast as possihie, Jest Dod- sley should repentof his generosity. I confess I was a littie nervous wee you were open- in gthe barre}, tet it should contain cold vit- uals and pine kindlings Hullo! what's this! he excisimed, taking a slip of pages that had lain beneath the lid: “A Thanksgiving re- mem brance!? Much obliged to von my un- known friend. Vil keep my Thanksgiving ow.” _ Douglas canght the slip from his friend's | hand;a deep flush rose into his cheek as he rec- ognized Ray Martin’s delicate and rather pe- cuhar handwriting. «The same oid apples that used to lie like | spheresofgoldin the long grass ofthe river meadow! I thought I knew them!” he ponder- | ed. “Jennings—” { But Jennings had dodged ont to promulgate | the good tidings among his fellow-officers. At | the same instant Mark Douglas’s eye caught a toreign glitter among the yellow straw. The Turgnoise ring! His heart gave a sudden leap as he remember- ed the careless, half romantic words with which be had placed 1t on her finger. And | then came the revulsion of feeling { “Whata fool I am! as if she could Rave known the destination of this chance gift!” Yet above the cold and caicularing voice of Teason, & far more welcome tone kept repeat- Bu to the year ot his heart, with perpetual re- Tain. i “She has called me back to her, shehas called | me back!” . i The twilight of Thanksgiving Eve was | brooding darkly over Mr. Martia’s great, old- fashiened kitchen, where the glow of pine logs afforded the only illamination, and the srill- voiced cricket piped behind the chimney bricks. Ray saw the red gleam flickeringon the leaf- less maples across the road, as she walked | slowly down the sloping path, with a gray shawl wrapped round her bead, and fresn carnations, born of the sharp, keen wind on | her cheeks. He bit his lip, und his brow grew dark. “Rachel, you seem to have forgotten the eng ement.’ “Engeg ment!” she repeated sharply. «I am tired of un ergsgement thatonly fettersone party while the cther is as free as air.” “Tired! He herifated amoment, as if vainly striving to command his yoice: “Do you wish to be released, Ray!” She did net answer—perhaps she was not gulte prepared for his phase of affairs. e:l me—yes or no!’ he demanded sternly. “Yes,” she answered with pettish abrupt- ness. “Then good-by, Ray.” Gone! Yes, he was gone. She watched him descending the mountain side with quick, even strides, under the scarlet draperies of clinging vines, through patches of deep, still shadow into belts of golden sunshine, until the over- bawging rock hid him from her view; yet it seemed +o difficult to believe thathe wasreally gone She looked down on the tiny engagement. ring that sparkled on her forefinger—a simple turquoise set in virgin gold, whose blue glim- Mer shone dimly through her tears—and she could not but remember the tender words with Which ske had placed it on her finger. «“Letis be& token between us. dearest, like ibe signet ring ofold times. Wherever I may be, this ring will always bring my heart back to its queen.” «I ought to haye returned it,” she pondared, shrinking as if the siender circlet of gold were aring of fire. “I will—some time!” So Mark Douglas lost his sweet heart, and T™marched down to Petersburg a solitary man, Mfarveling as many a one has doas before him, = the inscrutable mysteries of tae female eart. “Dretfal keen wind ain't it,” said the Wid- ow Taylor, untying the strings of her worsted Bovod; “powerful sharp trost last might! Deacon Priubone’s dahlias is black as svot, and ail Miss Morrison's morning-glories is blasted. Thankee, Miss Martin, my feet is cold; wou't ou take the rockin’-cheer yourselt? Why achel, child, what ails you! ail the neighbors are trikin’ bout how you've changed!” Rachel colored and turned away. “Lam well enough.” “I tell ye what, Miss Martin,’ began Mrs. Taylor, ina mysterious whisper to the elder dady, “you just take a double handful o’ green Willer bark, and bile it up well—or snakeroot tea ain't bad—and give her apint night and Mornin’. Why, it would be an aggravation!” ««Never mind, Ray, dear,” said her mother, soutdingly: lll makeup alot of real dough- nuts, and pack em round the biggest pair of turkeys father can find, with a box of litle pumiin pies; and you shall send a barrel of thoce go!den pippins from the old tree beyond tne brook—the tree Mark Dougias liked so well. They're in thegarret, in that old green che<t; and be sure and put in plenty o’ straw to pre- vent their mellerin against each other.’’ Rachel obeyed;aud Mrs. Martin never had the least ides of the tears she shed, with her trim jittle figure half into the barrel, he packed the great yeliow apples among the yellower f'raw. If the golden pippins could only hive epoken what a Thanksgiving story they might have told to the Army of the Potomac! Mr. Martin's broad fact beamed with satis- faction as he harnessed up old Dolly to carry the box and barrel to Bosten. «s1t’s jest ike yon women-folks to keep thing- im’ of such things,” he deelared. «Now it ver wouldn't ha’ comeinto my great wooden ad—and justtothink how betterour Thanxs- givin’ dinner’ll taste for rememberin’ the poor fellows that’s a- fightin’ for us! Gee up, Dolly.” And Mr. Martin winked his misty eye and cracked his whip simuitanecously. «I don’t—see— where—it—can—hbe!” ‘The golden vapors were all faded away from the sweet valley now—the gray Novethder sky stretched its dreary cancpy of cioud over the giens and forests, ‘he yellow leaves were rain- ing sadly down ground Ray Martin’s as she harried!y traversed the mountain path, push- ing aside the red &nd ruseet drifts with eager, tremulcus fingers, and searching 4s if forsome Precious lost talisman. « Oh, to think that Ll ehoutd have dropt it!” she faltered half aloud. “While I wore it I could still fancy our parting was bat a dream. h where could I have lost it!" Sheridan’s army visited the neighborhood of Upperyille and Middleburg on the 27th ult., and destroyed and earried away a considerable amount of prop- erty belonging to the secessionists of that neighborhood. A few days since another party of Union cavalry entered the county from Fairfax and made several arrests of disloyal Tesidents. Mosby is still reported to be alive, and itis faid that his friends are carrying him south by short and easy stages. The house of Mr. Lud Lakes, where: Mosby was woundeél ‘was searched by the cavalry which visited the | county on the 27th alt. A brigade of cavairy and artillery has been stationed near Lovetisville Gen. Devin isin command of the brigade. Winter quarters ara being erected, and it is probable this force will remain in the neighborhood of Loyettsyille during the winter. If this force had been sta- tioned in the county six months ago it would not have been necessary to destroy the resour- ces of its inhabitante. Arrival of Deserters.—Three hundred and eleven deserters arrived here Inst evening, and Were turned over to Col. Wells. It is stated upon geod authority, that the seven courts martial now in session in this city are dis- posing of more cases daily than are disposed of at all the other military posts eombinced.
