THE EVENING STAR. Frvancrar —The New York Evening Post says: Gold opened at 9324, and after selling up to 23434, closed at 232 Exchange is quiet at 109% for gold. The loan market is well supplied at7 per cent. In connequence of the disturbance of some heavy loaus, several of the brokers report considerable activity The difficulty has, how- ever, been quite limited in area. ‘The stock market opened steady and closed strong. Governments are quiet. Five-twen- ties at 10¢\(, new hoan at 108y. Before the first session American gold wes quoted at 232. ’ The N. Y. Commercial Advertiser says: The stock market is generally more active, though without any special speculative move- Ment. The tendency of prices is upward. The late + shorts” on railroads have covered their contracts, and are now operating for an ad- vance. Governments are stronger. 5-20’s rose at the board ¥. Aud 10 4t’s %. There is a fair demand formorey. The sup- ply is better than yesterday, and therate iseasy on call loans a: 7 per cent. There is rather more inquiry for discount, thongh the sales of paper are still very limited. The best names Bre discounted at 8 per cent, second class at9 and 10 per cent. The ©°!¢ market is strong, with a strong #peculative demand. In the absence of news, the ‘hulis’’ have taken opportunity to manipa- fate the market, and with success, the price having opened at 2723g, and subsequently ad- vanced ‘0 253%. The New City or Port RoyaL.—The Uni- ted Stotes Tax Commissioners for the State of South Carolina have laid out about one hun- dred acres of land on Port Riyal Harbor into city lots for the new city of Port Royal. The harbor of Port Royal, as is wel! known, is in every respect superior to Charleston harbor, andthe regenerated State of South Carolina will, doubtless, witness, among other changes, the traisfer of its chief commercial mart to this new locality, thus leaving Charleston, that hot-bed of secession, out in the cold.” The new city already contains two good piers, sev- eral fine stores and w&rehouses, an armory, machine shop, and a naval hospital. The har- bor bas eighteen feet of water at the lowest tide, being four feet more than the Charleston Bar. There isto bean auction sale of lotsin the new city on the 16:h of this month. THE Corton aT Sav ANNAH.—Collector Dra- per left this port at one e’clock this afternoon. im the transport Grenada, for Savannah, where be will take testimony relative to the owner- ship of the cotton captured at that place by General Sherman, and make such dispositions as the War Department may direct. Mr. Dra- per was appointed a cotton agent more than two menths ago, at which time he filed the necessary bonds to the amount of £100,000. He expects to be absent about fifteen days. The cotton will probably be sentto this city for fimaisale. It may, however, be sent directly to Europe from Savannah. Mr. Draper wiil be accompanied by a number of clerks and three or four gentlemen thoroughly acquainted With the cotton business.—New Fork Commer- cial, Jan. 4. Bap News ror THE UNHAPPILY MAatTrp.— Indiana has been always considered the para- dise of unhappily mated couples, for there they could goand get unmarried a halfan hourafter setting foot in the State. This not so now. The divorce laws have been changed, and now a year’s residence is required before an applica- tion for divorce can{be considered. A year’s pro- bation is not too much for so great a privilege, but itis entirely too long for the impatience of those who rush into matrimony without con- sideration, and on finding it not so pleasant as they anticipated, wish to rush oat of it with the same loccmotfve speed. The Solons of Indiané think there should be some liltle re- flection at one end or the other of the relation, and give the parties the ‘benefit of a year to escape the toils which so many baye bound around themselves in a week. > New York had its usual amount of murders and murderous assaults on New Year’s Day. Harry Lazarus, a prize fighter, was murdered by Barney Frierly. Officer Daniel, while in the discharge of his duty, was twice shot at by ruffianson Thompson street, the laet ball taking effect in his left ear. Officer Thompson was knocked down and badly beaten by rowdies. Superintendent Kennedy’s father-in-law, Mr. Matthew Crawford, was attacked and besten by ruffians. Mr. Richard Brown was shot while standing in front of his own door. SZ A locomotive of the Washington through train exploded on Tuesday evening. in Jersey City, severely injuring Charles Hutton, the engineer, and John Uampbell,a fireman, and also injuriog another fireman. The upper story of a three-story frame house in the vicin- ity was znocked off by a piece of the boiler, and a considerable quantity of glass broken in other buildings by the concussion. The train ‘was detained two hours. @7 Dr. J.G.
