Something haz baen said about raising the pay of clerks in some of the Departments, who get $Us3 per month. Why those same chaps that get $133 per month work say #1x hours daily, at the most, while our clerks work nine, ten, eleven, twelve, and thirteen hours, @ di and receive as compensa- tian £+00, $900, $1,200, and at most $1,400 per ancum_ There are clerks in the City Post Office, Mr. Editor, competent men, too, with three, four, five, six, and more little responsi- bilities apiece to look after, whe only receive $800 to $1,000 per annum, who pay their rent if they can, ard their grocer, and milkman. if the latter happen to be the first creditors who cail on pay-dey. These, Mr. Editor, are the kind of Bovernment clerks who are in an especial manner subjects for the beneficent considera- tion of Congress, and to whose favorable regards I respectfully request you to use yourintiuence in commending. ANTICIPATING THE DRAFT.—There appears itute brokers, already in Ashington en- deavoring to enlice persons resident here pro- posing to enlist to migrate to other cities, the promise of richer bounties being held out to them as an inducement. Last night, at the corner of 8th and F streets,a man could be heard by passers by haranguing a group of men upon the advantsge of going to Baltimore just before the drait, and take the bounties of- fered there. There is a law reaching all such fellows, and it will be well for ward commit- tees to lock after them, and see taat the law is strictly enforced in every ease SS aS CoLp QUARTERS.—(uite a number of va- eTgute are now lu Washington, arrived to en- joy winter quarters at the expense of the Cor- poration.
