CayTERBURY HALL.—Messrs. Murray and Hutcbingson, the wonderful aad justly ceie- brated gymnasts and professors of atbletic ex- ercises, Appear nightly in their extraordinary gyiatgry globe performance. STEED TISS Tae TRIAL OF Nokmawn L, KrNG, charged With having left the Union lines in July last, during the threatening of Washington by the repel forces, and with having entered the said service, and fighting against the Union forces then defending Washington, he being then sub- ject to draft in the District, was continued after our report closed yeerday, and the following additional testimony given in: Mrs. Louisa Centre, sworn on the part of the Trosecution, testified that the accused, while at er house. had considerable fever, but that he conversed well, and appeared to be in his right mind; that he stated to several that he intended to join the Confederates if he recovered, but feared he should die, and requested that, in ease he should not live, his watch, ring, &c., should be given to his brothers and sister. Miss Emma Gingell was sworn, and testified that she recognized the accused on entering the court-room; that he had called at her house, about three miles beyond Tenallytown, in com- any with a Mr.Counciiman, and asked her to change 8 bill for him, and she did not see him atter wards. Dr. Joshua Riley, of Georgetown, was sworn on the part of the defense, and testified that he ‘was called to the house of the father of the ac- cused on Wednesday evening, and he there found the accused wounded severely and in a raging fever, and his mind apparently entirely dethroned, he being unable to converse cohe- rently. The witness always knew the accused as 8 young man of gcod habits end well dis- sed. Pom. S. Wilson was sworn, and testified that be saw the accused in his barn yard, about? miles beyond Tennallytown, on Monday, but that he bad no gun, and appeared to be merely looking on at the skirmishing between the rebels and Unionists, which was going onin the vicinity; the rebel skirmish line being about thirty rods from the house of witness, in the direction of Georgetown; he saw nothing of him atterwards. 3 Mrs. Katalina Langdon was sworn, and testi- fied that she was grandmother to the accused; thatshe was at the house of his father when be was lying there wounded, and that his reason was very imperfect, he not being able to converse correctly on any subject; that on the evening he was brought home he was not expected to live over night. i Other witnesses were examined, but their statements did not vary materially from the bove. . ‘The Court adjourned to to-day at 11 o’clock. ge Pestic Scrbor PREesenraTions—First Dis- trict—On Friday last, Mr.5. Jona Thomson, principal ot the Male Grammar School, was the recipient, from his pupils, of a beantitul water pitcher, appropriately inscribed, pre- gerted with a neat speech by Master George R. Milburn, as a testimonial of the high appre- ciation entertained for him as their teacher, aud expressing pleasure at his uniform impar- tiality and kindness. The teacher replied ia appropriate terms of gratitude for their kind remembrance, and reminded them of the motto inscribed upon their banner—s- The roots are bitter but the fruitis sweet.”” This school, in the hands of its excellent teacher, maintains a front rank amongst the very best schools of the city, and we may say of the country as well. FS ina The teacher of Secondary School No. 2, Miss Slater, received from her pupils @ very pretty setof gold sleeve buttons, a bottle of perfu- mery, &c.,and from the pupils of the Grammar School, many of whom were ee fermer pu- pils, a handsome gold ring. Twoofthe most prom- inent of American tragic artists will commence eugagements here. At Ford’s Theater there will be Mr. Forrest, and Grover’s Miss A vonia Jones. ~ 1t is many years since the latter played bere—we believe seven. She was then buta debutante, but her magnificent beauty and her wonderful powers in the tragic art made her the pet and pride of the leading fashionable and political circles of Washington. She has had a varied experience siace then, butreturns to us, after vanquishing English and American critics, the acknowledged successor of Cush- man and Fanny Kemble, the admitted high priestess of tragedy, holding, in the opinion of the New York Herald, as an intellectual ac- tress, a position equal to Edwin Booth. Other critics speak of the sublime beauty and stat- uesqueness of her poses, into which she falls with an ease really compounded of native power and much hard study. We understand that she will make her debut inthe famous play of « Leah, the Forsaken,” which Mr. Gro- ver is getting up in handsome style expressly to do honor to the occasion. . ———_— Tur Fine DevARTMENT.—The three steam fire evgines for our paid fire department being built at the Amoskeag works, at Manchester, N.H. are, we understand, rapidly approach- ing completion, and the first one ere this time is probably completed and now enroute for this city. ‘The first ene will be No. 2, and will be housed in the No. 2’s building, (Franklin En- gine house,) D st., near 12th. The other two, one ot which will be placed in the Union Engine house (No. 1) andthe other (No.3) in the Col- umbia Engine house, will follow in within a Month. A gentleman who saw these engines a few weeks since speaks of them as being beau- tifal pieees of workmanship. In anticipation of the arrival of the s‘eam- ers the companies under direction of Chief En- gineer Sesstord have been training their horses thateverything may werk smoothly as soon &sthey errive. By the Ist of February the Department will be fully provided with steam- rs and truck, and with the fire alarm Jele- graph we will not be behind the improvem%gts of the age. En Tae Frn Sproirep.—Owing to numerous complaints by residents of the county, concern- ing the character of those who visit Orystal Springs, on Monday Superintendent Richards, With a posse of his men. went to the place, and Q@scertaining that a chicken fight was on the tapis, stationed his men around the place, and @tagivem signal all closed in and captured the entire party, 56 in number, and paroled them to appear at the Second Precinct station-house. Twelve of (ol pee who were present at the cock fight and appa- Tently concerned, were held for a hearing. The balance were dismissed, there being no evidence against them. The justice, in order to ascertain if there is any law in existence Which will subject the parties to a fine, holds the cases under advisement.
