THE EVENING STAR. . — —$—_—_—_—_—_—_—_—_—_——————— W. D, WALLACH, Editor and Prepricter. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY....DECEMBER 25, 1564. winner EE 7 BEADING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE BEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING THLE- @RAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. ——— CuHaNnainc Hanpds.—Report says that the venerable Intelligencer is to change proprietor- ship, Col. Seaton withdrawing on an annuity, and the paper going into the hands of Mr. John F. Coyle, (long connected with its business mansgement.) Mr. A. G. Allen, well known as an experienced journalist, and Col. Wm. R. Snow, a gentleman of energy and business capacity. It is to maintain the same political tone as heretofore, but is to be more newsy, aud is to have a Sunday edition, and other startling innovatio&s upon the old routine of that establishment. m2 We should be giad to learn how it is that important Associated Press dispatches from Fortress Monroe are sent from Balti- more northward in season for the afternoon papers in Philadelphia and New York, and are withheld trom the Washington afternoon papers. There is 4 screw loose somewhere. @7 From Hudson Taylor, 334 Pa. avenue, we Dave Dickens’ Christmas story for this year, entitled “Mrs. Lirriper’s Legacy.” FrvanciaL.—The New York Post of last evening says: Gold, on the official news of the capture of Savannad, fell to 25% yesterday. The open- ing price this morning was 211%, the lowest 214, the highest 213, and at the close 217 was bid. Exchange is dull at 109% 81095. The loan market is rather more active, and few loans have been disturbed. The supply of capital seeking temporary investment is, how. ever. accumulating, and little fear is ente! tained of any stringency. Thecurrent rate is 7 percent. Commercial paper is dulland scarce at7¥a9 per cent. The bank statement shows a decline in de- its of over five and a half millions and in joans a decline of only one million. The other changes are unimportant. The stock market opened dull, but after- wards became more animated, and closed ir- regular. After the Board there was more disposition buy, and prices recovered The Commercial Advertiser says: The stock market is dull, but, on the whole, strorger thanon Saturday. Governments were uiet, but higher. Five-twenties advanced x; ‘en-forties ',, and Seven-thirties 1. Railroad bonds were dull. Bank stocks, no transactions, but firm. Gold is active and higher. The effect of the fall ot Wilmington appears to have been dis- counted in advance, and this morning, under a brisk export demand, the price has rallied. ‘Yesterday, at the up-town board, the price fell to 208; this morning the price opened at 214, and sold up to 217. 7A woman died in Gloucester last week, aged 30 years, who had given birth to 12 chil- dren in ten years. Eleven of these were born at five births-four times twins and once trip- Jets. @7 The U.S, Armory at Springfield, Mass., turns out 25,000 rifled muskets per month. The oldest record of thisarmory shows work done an April, 1779, when 40 hands were employed. wa The “Tippecanoe,” the last of the iron- ¢elads contracted for at Cincinnati, was launched 4n the Obio on: Thursday last. Her length is 235 feet and width 45 feet. BZ Ohio produced the most wool and wine of any State, last year, viz: 10,608,927 pounds of the former and 565,617 gallons of the latter. WW The subscriptions to the ten-forty loan for the week ending Saturday, amount to $29,- 658,550, and to the seven thirties, 2331,150.
