In fact, we find energetic Mr. Ben. F. Freuch, of that establishment, up to the elbowsin the midst of & most delightfal but slightly embar- | rassing preseure of holiday riches in the shape of freshly arrived packages of superb books, portemonnaies, photographic albums, travel ing bags, card cases, and all sorts of ladies nickanckerie, prayer-books, gold pens, &c., &c., ete ,etc., Abd we fancy that, witb all bis knowledge of literary wares and their econom- ie arrangement, he is just a leetile botnered where to find room for all this new stock on his already crowded shel vee, tables aud cases. The Cbrisimas editions of standard authors, British and Americas, are wonderfully varied and rich, and the book-maxers have also ex- erted their capabilities in the way of single works specially adapted for illustrations and beautifui- ornamentation, as, for example, the thre2 editiors of Tennyson's “Enoch Arden,” issued by Tickror & Fields. Taylor caters this year for the little folks in & way that must earn their lasting gratitude. We cannot undertaye to enumerate the list of superbly illustrated new javenile books, or magnificent new editions of old favorites. dis- pisyea oo in progress of being displayed) on shelves, but we should imagine that it covers everything ever yet prepared in this way for the delectation of the young folks. —»—— PuoTooRars ALBUMS, in endless variety: are for sale at the Gift Bookstore, 210 Pennsyl- yania avenue. at ¥5 per cent. less than can be purchased at any other store, and of silver-plated ware presented with each. C, Baker, charged with false imprisonment in arresting and holding Dr. Stewart Gwinn in Jannary last, was con- tinued, and after our report closed, Mr. Jor- dan, Solicitor ot the Treasury, testified that he made an investigation of the charges against Dr. G. after his zrrest, and found no grounds for holding him. On cross examinat'on, witness stated that he allowed Col. Baker to pursue his own course in making his investigations, and recollects that some partially printed notes were found in Dr. Gwinn’s room, which was regarded as suspicions. The witness was subject to a lengthy cross examination, the object being to prove that the Treasury Department was accountable tor tbe arrest, for althou-h no specific orders were given, yet the intention of Col. Baker to arreat Gwinn was talxed of previons thereto in the presence of &@ number of officers and no objec- tion was urged. ee A WOED OF CAUTION.—The morning after the late fall of snow, several persons were seriously injured by falling upon sidewalks from which the snow had not been removed. One of the persons, a lady, was very seriously injured. There is a law in existence making it the daty of housekeepers to have the snow removed from the payements in front of the houses they occupy within six hours after every fall of snow, and the penalty for neglect- ing this duty is fifty cents for every hour the snow is allowed to remain atter the six hours allowed forthe work. As the sanitary police design to enforce this law strictly for the future, it will be well for housekeepers to attend to it for their own benefit, if not for Public good. Mayor Wallach has published a botice calling public attention to the law, which he expresses the hope will be complied with by all, without necessitating the enforos- ment of the penal section. ————— GREAT SALE OF STocks.— Messrs.
