We cannot youch for the truth of this statement, but give it as we hear it. Impression gains etrength among both sol- diers and citizens that the Confederates are evacuating. If this be so, the march om Ken- tucky may be said to have commenced. We think it quite possible—indeed, probable. During the past month the record of metropolitan crime has been simply hideous. All manner of iatamy, all grades ef brutality—in short the whole ga- mut of wickedness seems to have been ran through persistently, villainy thrammtag es- peciaily upon the murder string. To the cases which comes betore ud eG must be added those the records of which lie only in the offi- ces of referees, and neyer meetthe public eye eave in the meerest allusions. Interminable divorce cases, inyolying the vilest turpitude, are heard by the score in dingy Wallstreetand William street offices, and yet of these the Grand Juries are in blissful ignorance. Be it Temarked, also, that scandal was never sorife and society never so thoroughly poilated by social sins. [t would appear asthongh wehad indeed fallen upon evil days when the evil pas- sions grow strictly dominant, ‘and will not down.” The United States Grand Jury have indicted Isaac Henderson late Navy Agent, for alleged malvereations while holding that position. Mr, Hendexeon s friends stillappear to be confident of his vindication when the case will be sub- mitted fortrial. Mr. Henderson is like wise de- fendant in acivil suit for #125,500,59, brought by Joseph L. Savage, a Government contrac- tor, the same gentleman upon whose represen- tations Mr. Henderson was deprived of his office and arrested upon the above charges.
