—_ REN EPG ROPE OOTOLINE BE TET TE TE EEL THE EVENING STAR. SHERMA From the Front. [From the Savannah Republican, Nov. 26-] We copy from the Augusta Chronicle the following interesting items concerning the left wing of the Yankee army: From up the Georgia Read. {From the Chronicle, 234.) Weconversed with an intelligent gentleman who arrived last night by the passenger train up the Georgia railroad. ie informed us that on Monday the Federals left the line of the Georgia road, going directly to Eatonton. The only Yankees who came to Greensboro’ were a few stragglers, who were captured. The trains ran up to Greensboro’ and Athens yesterday. A portion of Major Grabam’s command reached this city last night They report that they visited Atlanta several days since, and | found it completely evacuated and burned. | They state that the Federals took all the cattle and forage m their route, but did not molest those who stayed at home = They captured two or three hundred Yan- kee stragglers, who will probably reach here to.day. | They also corroborate the statement of the Federais leaving the Georgia railroad and going in the direction of Eatonton. From the Georgia Railroad. {From the Chronicie, 21th.) | The passenger train on the Georgia road | ‘went to Oconee river yesterday. Gentlemen who left Sparta yesterday morning inform us thar the reportot the Yankees being at Pow- elton is incorrect, as our scoats report that there are vo Yankees on this side of the Oconee ¥.ver. The Federal colamn that le‘t the line of the Georgia railroad on last Sunday are reported to be eighteen miles below Greensboro. march- ing in the direc’ion of the Central railroad. ' Toe Yaekees have destroyed the State House, penifentiary, and hotel, at Milledgeville, and made an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the depot. No movement has been made against Athens or Scull Shoals. Eighty Yankee prisoners have atived at Athena, and one Rundred more are expected. The Situation. {From the Augusta Uonstitationalist, Nov. 25.] The latest reliable intelligence from the direc- tien of Macon comes trom our sconts sent out from Sparta. These scouts, who came in last | evening, report that a body of from 600 to 1,000 | Yankee cavairy had crossed the Wconee, and were moving slowly and nervously towards Sparta. * * * * * | Oue of the most encoraging features of this “invasion” is the fact, which we have from the | most undoubted testimony, that hundreds of the enemy are straggling from their main bodies and searching for somebody to take them into custody. They are sprawling all over the | country. and those who are not willing to sur- render can be beautifally bushwhacked. Let the old and young folks turn ou! and ve the rascals a taste of Georgia State sovereignty. This demoralizstion of our enemy is most providentiai for us, aud ought to stiffen the backbone of the most timid amongst us. Three bundred prisoners arrived last eve- bing from the Georgia road, and four hundred more are to arrive to-day. These prisoners re- ort that a division of 3.0.0 cavalry has fol- | jowed them all the way, dashing upon them constantly, picking up stragglers and capturing wagons. Hampton's invineible cavalry will be with | us = @ day or so, and hang upon their eastern | flank. General Wayne has whipped Kilpatrick's cavalry division at the Oconee bridge, driving | them headlong and in contusion. He tele- | graphs that he is perfectly able to take care of | bimeelf. | Wheeler, with many thousard men, has in- tercepted the enemy ata point at present un- ee neulte and is giving them no rest night or day. The main body of the enemy is moving down the western side of the Oconee, and has shown no disposition, thus far, te attempt its pas- sage. The skies are brightening. Everything looks glorious, aod ere long Mr. Sherman will get a Jashing that he litle dreamed of when he made bis “On totbe Gulf.” The gulf of perdition be upon him! Treachery Acticipated at Augusta. From the Augusta Register, November 21.] e find, upon visiting the different railroad depots, that our military authogities are exer- cising the preper vigilance. We sagt inat not only the ratiroads, but all the roi ding fromm the city, be most dil- | igently guarded, and none be permitted to pass in the direction of the enemy. | In the approach of an enemy there will always be some cowardly and treacherous men, who, to make fair terms with them, will escape to their camps and give what informa- | tion can be gleaned. Let our military men Jook to this; it is im- | portant. SHot as a Sry —The Troy Times says that | Professor Locke, formerly of Troy, and buta few years since leader of the Universalist Church choir, was detected asa rebel spy in | the service ot Gen Braxton Bragg—receiving $00 per month in greenbacks. He wasarrested | within the lines of the army of the Tennessee, shortly after the battle of Murfreesboro, while in the act of taking plans of our fortifications, guns and magazines in the vicinity. Upon being searched, plans of our fortiticationsand | descriptions of our guns and magazines were found in his stockings. He wasput under guifrd to await trial, and while attempting to | escape, quite recently, he was shot dead by the | sentinel. A GuNsoat Car.—The military at Nash- ville bave just turned out # sort of herma- phrodite affair, which is called a “gunboat car.’ It will accommodate twenty men inside, who can keep off with the Minie rifle two hundred of an attacking party without fear of injury. Armed with the Spencer rifle a mach greater body of men could be driven off by the twenty soldiers inside. Upon the top of the car may be placed a six-pounder which could be used with effect upon a retiring party. 7 Itis reported that E. M. B. Hookera gen- tleman long connected as an editor, reporter, | and correspondent’ of the. Indianapolis Jour- nal,has gone msane ovéra recent arrest by Sherman of himself, for writing home to his paper contraband army news. The last heard | of Mr. Hooker he turned up missing at Louis- | ville, while en bis way home under gaard. | er ~ LEGAL NOTICES SUPREME CUURT OF THB DISTRICT | COLUMBIA, holding a District Court of | the United States for the said District. .
