The table extended around three sides of the dining room, and was most tastefully orna- Mented. (ver the centre of the table a Star Syangies Banner of large size was displayed, Mr. W.R. Smith, the President of the Society, resided, supported on his right by Hon. Simon ‘ameron, and on his leffby Mayor Wallach. The chaplain, Rev. Mr. Elliett and J.0. Mc- Guire, Psq., Messrs. Gardner and A. Woodley, Vice-Presidents, and Secretary Spence, and ‘Treasurer Wilson were present, and we no- ticed at the table Mr. Ruthertord, one of the bailies of Glascow, who is now making an ex- tended tour of this country, Ben Perley Poore, Esq., Pay master Clark, of the Navy, J. F. En- nis, and W.J. Miller, of the Washington bar, and others. The company assembled around the table and after prayer was offered by Mr. Elliott they did full justice to the abundantly spread substantials, after which the cloth was re- moved. The President made a few appropriate re- marks caikng on the company to charge their lasses and announced the regular toasts as fol- ows 1. The day we celebrate and all who honor it. (Song, “T'was within a mile of Edinboro- town,” by Mr. Parsons.) 2. Seotia, Oh, Scotia, my dear, my native soll, For whom my warmest wish to Heayen is | sent, Long may thy hardy sons of rustic toil, Be blessed with health, and peace, and sweet content. [Song, “Fiag of the Union,” by Mr. Parsons.) 4. The Cameron Clau; absent and present. {The piace of Gilbert Cameron, Esq., the former president, was vacant, but Hon. Simon Cameron was present.) Mr. Cameron responded, stating that the Jast time he met the society was in the begin- ning of the rebellion, when they gave an en- tertainment to A regiment of their fellow-citi- zens commanded by his brother, who after- ‘wards lost his life in battling for the cause of the Union, and as an evidence of the valor of that regiment, he would state that in that bat- tle six out of the ten captains were killed or disabled, and of the thirty lieutenants bat ten or tweive were fit fcr duty afterwards. That Tegiment had served with distinction tn vari us parts of the country after serving with the Army of the Potomac, being transferred to other scenes of conflict, and during their term after losing their colcnel, (the speaker’s broth. er,) four other colonels were killed, and when they returned home there were but 1s0 left. He paid a high tribute tothe Scottish charac- ter. Scotchmen were to be found everywhere and wherever found they were master men. Under the name of Englishmen they came over in the Mayflower—they were Scotch- English. {Lauybter.| They also settled in other paris of the country. Everywhere the Scoten were to be found, and they were not mere hewers of wood aud drawers of water— they were master men. In a list of twenty generals he had recently seen, fifteen were Scotch, or descendants from the Scoth. Grant was of Scottish extraction. and Wellington was of thesame, although said to be an Irishman. He was a Scoteh-lrish- man. As an evidence of the superiority of Scottish mind over matter, he stated that the Jand in the neighborhoodot Edinburgh, which years Ago was sterile, was now rented at $10u per acre perannom. He then referred to the { institotions of this couvtry, and referred to his | friend McGuire as an instance of whata Scotch- Dan could be. He bad made aname to be proud of. Mr Cameron proceeded to remark upon na- tonal questions, and said he had never had | any doubt as to the result of the rebellion. Slavery was destined to be blotted out by the war. When he was in the Senate he was op- posed to agitating the elavery question. About 2 week betore Jeff Davis left the city, he met Mrs. Davis, who asked him to come up and ace Jet!, and he sccepted the invitation. In the course of the conversation the impending Tebellion was talked of, and the speaker satd then that if the South made war on the North the negroes would be turned against them; and Jeff. then promised that he would invade Penn- Sylvania and make his (the speaker’s) house Disheadquarters. He believed thatthe arming ofélaves was & wise and judicious measure, nd that no man who took up arms in defence of the country should be held as a slave. In conclusion he remarked that he always found friends among the Scotch, especially if be got in a ught place, and briefly returned his thanks for the compliment. S. It is, however, one of the privations of age, toOwhich I must submit without repining, and find what compensation I may inthe more quiet and fitting comfort of the fireside. Your association which was originally so small as to be merely experimental has now lived through its first decade, gathering strength and stability with every added year and thatit may with the happiness of its in- dividual members continue to flourish as an honored society, “till Birnam wood do move to Dunsinane,” or Calton Hill kiss Ben Lo- mond, is with many thanks tor your kind in- vitation, the sincere wish of Your obliged and most respectful friend, V.
