In the audience, we noticed quite a number of ladies, ‘who manifested much interest in what was said anddone. The excellent band engaged for the occasion, performed its part of the ex- ercises admirably well. It belongs toa per- T™anent company of cavalry, from Oariisle ‘Barracks, Pennsylvania, which is now sta- tioned at Camp Stoneman, at Giesboro Point. After the preliminary business had been dis- ed of, the President of the Club, Mr. P. A. os well, introduced to the audience Mr. H. A. Pierce, of California, who addressed the club an an eloquent and intelligent speech on the political issues of the day, which was received With loud applause. General Carrington, District Attorney, then Sppeared on the stand, and was received with tremendous applause. Gen. ©. said he dia not Attribute this flattering reception to anything he bad done; but that it was the overflowing joy of loyal hearts in behalf of the country. cre said he had a great many friends in the Seventh Ward, but mere personal friendship could not elicit such exhibitions of joy. He ‘was glad to see that the right spirit pervaded the audience: was glad to seeit so enthusi- astic; and was also glad to see so many sol- diers present. He knew they had done their duty in the fleld by the cartridge-box, and knew they would aiso do their duty on the Sth @t the ballot-box. He wished to know what his fellow-citizens had come to Island Hall for, and what they were doing there. Well, be said, he knew. The child was christened, and his name is Abraham Lincoln. Address- ang the soldiers, he said they should pray for the Union and fight for the Unicn, under the Mlag. He hoped he wonld be excused for talk- ing tothe soldiers, for heonce was a soldier bimeelr. To tne ladies present like to say something to them, but was afraid. He had talked to very many ladies ‘when he was young, but always made a fool of himself when he did so. ewas glad to see them there, especiallyin so good acause. ‘The devotion of women was firm, steadfastand trne. Tis the voice ot some loved friend who has come to minister to his wants, and, by the untiring devotion and kind care of that wite, mother or sister, he finally rallies And recovers, and once more enters the field and strikes another blow for freedom and his country, his Government and his flag. After the speaker had discoursed a while donger, and was about to take his seat, some one in the audience wished him to ‘tel! them something about Bill Gary.” He resumed by Saying that he a night or two since passed by 2 McClellan club-room, and there was Gary ad- dressing the club, and all he could hear him Bay was‘ “it’s unconstitutional; it’s unconsti- tutional,” which was about all they had to say. He could not illustrate it better than by relating an incident which occurred in Virginia a few years since. It was proposed to build a rail- Toad from * Possum’s Hollow” to the Devil’s Den, across @ very high mountain. The folks of these two places never met but that they had @ quarrel; and, while one party wanted the Tailroad constructed, the other was decidedly opposed to it, and swore it should not be done. ‘He, while in conversation with General * of “Possum’s Hollow,” asked him what he thought of the idea of constructing the railroad; ihe General thought it an excellent thing. Just at this time Col. Fireball, of the «‘Devil’s Den,” came up, and he declared it was unconstitu- tienal, and swore that if a train of cars ever crossed that mountain, he would be d—d if they ‘would ever get back again, and puiled eff his coat and wanted to whip the General: when the General told him, if he licked a man he wanted to lick & cleaner one that Col. Could the gallant men in the field support him who had pronounced the war a failure, after having lost 80 many of their comrades! Could they vote for him who has thus attempted to dishonor the gallant dead! Could they now abandon the contest when victory is within their grasp, and leave their braye comrades in dishonored graves, some of them brothers, who have yielaed up their livesand spilled their warm and patriotic blood in defense of the best gov- ernment on earth? Most of our readers are familiar, doubtless, with the novel on which the play is founded. The beauty of a sister’s love for an out-cast, but innocent brother, and the grate- tul fidelity of those in humble life to their em- ployers. are touchingly drawn. So, also, is the pathetic incident of the erring and dis- carded wife and mother, who altered past re- cognition, like a ghost of her former self, re- inhabits the happy home she madly lost, and listens, in anguish, to the very song she sung in her early bridal days, while the bridegroom whe then listened, now hears it again from the lips of the fond wife, who has replaced her in his heart, while the smiling forgetfulness of the woman that drearily upen them, seems & mockery of the wi that rng like a <teath-knell on the heart: ‘When other lips and other hearts Pipes of love shall be uage whose excess imparts, The love they feel so well. ™Mé6y perhaps, in such & scene, Some Tecollection. a 4 Of da: be, that have as hay deen, << —____ UCTIVE Fige.—Shortly after 9 o’clock ao slarm of fire was sounded ». 21, at the corner of New Jersey avenue and C-street, which was caused by the extensive food. eb. issuing of erie on tablisbment an ot 3.5. There had been no person attached to the firm in the building for over two hours before the fire was discovered, and there seems to be no doubt but that it was the work of an incern- diary. The steamersand hook and ladders were on thespot and at work in ten minutes after the alarm was sounded. ——_—-— SABraTH OnsERVANCES. — The various churches of our city were well attended yes- terday, as also were the different Sabbath schools. Communion was held in many of the places of worship. and missionary and tem- perance meetings were held during the after- noon by the Sunday school scholars. During the evening services at Wesley Chapel Presi- dent Lincoln and Mrs. Lincoln were present, together with Attorney General Bates and other prominent persons of Washington. Mrs. Elizabeth Comstock, of the Societv of Friends, was presentand addressed the congre- gation. Rey. C.C. Burr officiated in the ab- sence of the pastor, Rev. Dr. Nadal. Mrs. Comstock based her remarks on the words «We have no continuing city here, but we seex for one to come.” She handled her subject ably, and all present were well pleased with her judgment and sound reasoning in connec. tion with tne text. 2S A DoveLre MARRIAGE.—At six o’clock last evening, East Washington Methodist Church was filled to overflowing, by a large con- course of persons, who came to witness the solemnization of the marriage vows between two young couples, of the Sixth Ward. The brides were the two Misses Eila and Emma Austins, daughters of Mr. V.C. Austin, and the grooms, Mr. E. J. Palmer, clerk ijn the ordnance Department of the Navy Yard, and Mr. J. Orville Johnson, the well-known pho- tographer of the Sixth Ward, (and who has now in his beautiful bride, taken the best pic- ture of all) was performed by Rev. H. N.
