Morton!! | ——.—_—= InpIANAPOLIS, Noy. 4.—Horace Heffern, Deputy Grand Commander of the Sons of Lib- erty in Indiana, who hs been on trial here for Participation in a treasonable conspiracy, to- day turned State's evidence, and made a start- ling revelation of the schemes of the order. He taid nobody but Democrats had ever been ad- mitted into the order, cr would be if they ap- plied. He confirmed the previous evidence of the military organization and the appointment of a msjor general to command it. Dr Bowles, one of the aceused, was com- mander-in-chief, with a staff, of which Dr. James B. Wilson, recently arrested, was adju- tant general. He said that a committee of thir- teen was appointed to prepare for an icsurrec- tion imtended to rel-ase all the rebel prisoners fm the northwest, arm them from government arsenals, overturn the State government, kill Goy. Morton or hold bim as a hostage for | captured insurrectionists, and then form the North west into a separate confederacy. He said he was told by Adjutant General | Wilson that $500,000 bad been sent by the rebel | agents in Canada into the Northwest, to pur- | chase arms for the order. and that 200,0/0 had been left in Indiana, in the hands of Dodd and Jobn ©. Walker Wilson showed Heffern #1,0:0 that he re- ceived from Birols to buy arms in Wash- ington. Heffern further swore that the committee of | thirteen had appointed ten men to kill Gov. Morton, and a few days since the Governor received a letter declaring that the writer and bis associates were sworn to kill him and | would do it. Hetfern’s revelations astonished the court, though prepared, because of previous evidence, for & part of it. If Gov. Mcrton was killed, Dr. Athen, Sec- | retary of State, was to take his place, as Pros | vided by law in case of the death or disability | of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. | cer Bu siding; 8) son meeting will be he'd at Island Hall, ATURDAY, November tth, 7% o'clock p.m. Membere of the Club will meet at 7 o'clock.
