At last we haye “some- thing new under the snn,” and, being well put upon the stage, the full effect is givea. We have seldom seen a pliy with such marked characters, or one in which the performers quare completely caught the spirit of the au- or. The scenic effects are very fine. The demon forceries, the illuminated church, and its sud- den descent, are a departure from the beaten track. The attention evidently bestowed on those trifies, which go so far to make or mar the whole, gave a wondertully life-like air to the scenes before us, and deserve notice. in every particular the performance reflects much credit on the management, and we pre- dict its success. eee eae. THE AUTHORITY OF THE POLICE.— Yesterday afternoon, two old resisents of the Sixth Ward gotinto a dispute about the authority of the police to enter a house and make an arrest on & ‘warrant, which resulted in Wm. Venable seiz- ing a stick and threatening to strike the other, Alonzo Breast. It appears that an officer had arrested a friena of Venable’s in his house, on a warrant, which Venable thought he had no right to do, when Breast said that if he had a ‘warrant he would arrest Venable, which caused the latter to seize the stick and make at him. Venable was arrested by officer Pierce and taken before Justice Cull, who heid him to bail to keep the peace. ea CHARGE OF GRAND LARCENY.—Last night, Johm Jackson and Samuel Washington, col- ored, were arrested by officer Miller upon a charge of stealing lumber from the lumber yard of Wm. McLain, on 15th street, near the canal. A soldier sawtwo men taking the lum- ber, but was not present at the trial this morn- ing. Mr. McLain and his men could not iden- tify the lumber A girl testified that she saw Washington carrying the lumber intoa yard near the canal, but testified that Jackson was not the man who was with him. Justice Mil- ler dismissed the case against Jackson, but held Washington for a farther hearing. Se GameE.—The old sportsmen in and around the District were very sure that game would be driven entirely away from their former ranges, This season partridges and rabbits are plentiful in the country around Washing- ton. The timid birds have become so well ac- quainted with the troops quartered around the Metropolis that flocks approach the forts and quietly feed under the guns. Sportsmen who have not sold out their equipments will be tempted to take the fleld, notwithstanding the high prices of ammunition. Insane.— Day before yesterday, a young man nemed George King entered the ninth precinct station-honse and acted in a strange manner, when Sergeant Clark caused him to be locked up. Yesterday morning, when he was let out, it was apparent that he was insane, and Ser- geant Clark started with him to his boarding- honse, but on the road he met two friends, and became perfectly uncontrollable. Sergeant Clark procured the necessary papers, and yes- terday afternoon he was admitted to the In- sane Asylum. ——e PREPARE FOR WINTER.—We cail attention to an advertisement in another column, of all in want of stoves, heaters, furnaces, &c., which may be found at the store of W. I. Wyvill, 453 Pennsylvania avenne, near :}d st. “(Quick sales and small profits’ is his motto. He has also on hand a large assortment of housefurnishing goods and hardware. SS DISORDERLY GATHERINGS.—The citizens re- sidmg on 3d street east, between M and N south, are complaining that a number of boys who congregate in that neigborhood are very disorderly at times, and that their language is not of a proper character for a respectable neighborhood. ——————— Batt To-Nient.—Don’t forget the ball this evening for the benefit of Mr. Wm.
