SLE TE The Enemy Attempt a Sharp Trick—They Attempt to Penetrate our Lines and Cap- ture our Fortificutions, buture Repulsed with heavy Loss to them. see eatiantl {Corresponcence of the Associated Press.] HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE POTOMAC, | Oct. 30.—The utmost qniet has prevailed along the line to-day. Even picket firing seemed to be stopped by unanimous consent. Since the army returned from the late move- ment toward the Soutbside railroad the regi- mental and brigade commanders have been holding inspections, and the comminds are being put in as efiective condition as before they started. OcTOBER 31,68. m.—The enemy attempted to play a sharp trick on our line last night, at half-past 9 o'clock, which was partiaily suc- cessful: but the main object was defeated with considerable loss tw them. At the point of con- nection between the 2d and 5th corps pickets they made an entrarce, and, passing from one post to another, they penetrated the line some distance, taking all the men prisoners. They then sent forward a heavy force to charge the line of breastworks, in the hope of pos our center. But one of the pickets ad effected his escape to the main line, and given warning in time for the men to be put on guard bebinc the works: and when the rebsls advanced they received sucb a fire as to drive them back in confusion, and wita heavy loss. | Repeated attempts resulted in like manner; and although firing was kept up nearly all night, the enemy gained no farther advantage. Our loss is put down at three hundred and eighty-seven men captured. Toe casualties in killed and wounded are not known, but are very few. The loss of the enemy must have been heavy, as they ad- vancrd in range of our batteries and infantry. It was somewhat dark, however. and, of course, firing was not so effective as it would have been bad our men had a good view of the enemy. | At this hour all is quiet. Major Walsh, of tne 3d Pennsylvania cay- alry, op duty at headquarters, has been pro- | moted to the rank of lieutenant colonel—a pro- | motion which has been long earned, and whieh | affords pleasure to his numerons friends. In tnis docoment, Jeff, while claiming that thanks are due for “the many signal victories with which our arms have been crowned,” forthe fruitfalness with | which our jand has been blessed,” and for the | unimpaired energy with which the hearts of the rebels have been inspired, at the same time | acknowledges that “eur sins have merited and received grievous chastisement.” (for which athe soldiers of the Union can youch,) and that “large districts of our country have been Swept over and held by the armies of the United States." Norris, were returning te their homes from &@ party in the eastern part of the city, and when going down the south side of the Capi- tol, between Soutt Capitol and Ist street west, they met Simpson, who was cheering for McUlelian. The deceased asked what he was shouting for McClellan for, when he was in the employ of the Government. Some faw words passed be! ween them, but not of an angry na- ture, when the three sat down by the railings. After @ short time, Brady rose to go home, when Simnson stepped up, and, without utter- ing & word or giving any warning, drew a pistol and fired two loads, one of the balls stri- king the deceased in the abdomen, just below the ribs. Sergeant Milstead. with officers Adler and Arnold, were quickly on the spot, and called on Dr. Ford, who promptly answered their summons, and dic ail in bis power to al'eviate the sufferings of the injured man. Simpson bad left when the officers arrived, and they at once entered on a search for him, Lut in ashort time he returned to the scene of the homicide, when he was recognized by Mr. Morris and taken incnstody.
