THE EVENING STAR. LATE NEWS FROM THE SOUTH: Deings—Affairs Be erations on James Elections—Frem Georgia and M ie. The following extracts are from Richmond the 18th instant: besten From the Valicy. cist mond Sentinel contains a re, a aaa be Valley by Early. The fight is to have occurred on Friday last: ‘At the time of writing this there has been no efficial account of the Strasburg affair received. The Charlottesville Chronicle says that Gen’l Sberidan has sent two corpe of his army to this aide of the Blue Ridge, one of them marching through Chester and the other through Manas- sas Gap. On Friday General Early attacked the remaining corps (the Eighth,) under Gen’) | Crook at Strasburg and drove them throngh the town, across Cedar Creek. Passengers by the Central train last night bring some particulars of the fight on Thaurs- | day last. he battle was fought at Stickley’s Shop, two miles and a half north of Strasburg, and near Cedar Ureek. It appears that our eavalry made the attack and then slowly fell back totheir infantry support, the Yankees essing on under the impressien that nothing Bat cavalry was opposing them, when, the in- | fantry and cavalry having united, turned upon | the enemy and completely routed them, cap~ | turing, killing and wounding a large number. | It is said but twelve men escaped out of 4 | whole brigade. | Meseby’s Doings. OcTosER 16, 16¢4.—J. of War: Un the 14th inst. Col. Moseby struc! the Baltimore and Obio railroad at Daffield, destroying a United States mail train, consist- | ing of a Jocomotive and ten cars. Twenty prisoners and fifteen horses were captured. Among the prisoners were two paymasters, ‘with $168,000 in government funds. R. E. Lez, General. Before Richmond, There was arumor yesterday that Sunday night Grant attempted to throw a pontoon bridge across the river above Dutch Gap, but ‘was prevented by our gunboats. Persons who arrived from the front last night report thata | Jarge body of the enemy crossed over to the south sideon Sunday night. There has been no change before Petersburg, and with the ex- ception of changing 8 few shells occasionally itis very quiet.—Sentinel. a. ~ pera A. Seddon, Secreasy | the James. P| OcTopER 13, 161.—70 Hon. James A. Seddon, Seeretary of War: At 7 o'clock this a. m. the enemy endeavored to advance between the | Darbytown and Charles City roads, but were | repulsed in every attempt. he most strenu- | ous effort was made at 4 p. m., after which he withdrew, leaving many dead. Our loss very | slight. R. E. Lex, General. The Examiner says: «We haye g00d an- thority for saying that the cartel has been toa | certain ex tent resumed. Arrangements haye | been made to exchange immediately ten tnous- | @nd Yankee prisoners at Savanah, Georgia, | and Gaptain Hatch will leave in @ few days | to superintend the whole affair. The Presidency. The Richmond Sentinel says, editorially : The elections in the North, of which we are | just publishing the resaits, indicate the elec- tion of Abraham Lincoln beyond a reasonable doubt. The neise and enthusiasm of the vic- tortous party are as yet too great to allow the umexaggeraied truth to be learned, but the States whose October elections are usually ac- | cepted asthe index to the grand struggle in November, have spoken with sufficient dis- tinctness. Ourenemies thus declare forcon- | tinued war. And not only for continued w~ : for McClellan would give them that, br, 77 ‘war conducted on the most barbarov', prin. ciples, animated by the most diab} cal hate, and haying for its end the destirnetion of a numerous and brave people. From Mobiie. MosiLz, Oct. 12.—Three Yankee gunboats and four transports were up the river yester- | day as far as Eastport. They landed 2,000men | and three pieces of artillery. Lieut. Col. Kel- ley, with Forrest’s old command, surprised the enemy, capturing 3 guns, 25 prisoners and 30 horses. Two hundred of the Yankees were drowned in attemptirg to re-embark on their boats. | The first shot from our batteries penetrated the boiler of one of the transports, and many | men were scalded and burned to death. The | boats have gone down the river. Our vic- | tory complete. N. B. Forrest, Maj. Gen. Frem Georgia. The Examiner says:—«The report ot the ; capture of Rome, Georgia, with two thousand prisoners, is not correct, but entirely un- jounded.” The Richmond Examiner says :—‘ The An- gusta (Ga.) Sentinel says it is well known that | Gen. Hood is in the rear of Sherman's army; that nocar has passed over the State road for ten days, and that Sberman’s supplies are com- pletely cut off by that ronte. The Montgom- ery Appeal says a report has reached New- man, by couriers, that our forces have suc- | ceeded in destroying the railroad for seventeen | miles about Big Shanty, and still held the road | on Friday.” The Cries of the Faint-Hearted. | Under this head the Richmond Sentinel dis- | courses on what it terms «stony ground pa- triots.”” We have evidences of the faintness of some of our citizens, in the cries they are uttering and the schemes they are proposing. Some of | there stony-ground men say peace, peace, when they know there can be no present | peace; just as the thirsty traveler in the desert | calls for water, which is at a distance, instead | of orging his way thither. Others cry out negotiate, when they know that the enemy re- fuses to negotiate. They wish us to apply with the importunity of beggars, although we meet only with rpffian repulses. Others call upon us to assemble in general convention of States, to discuss and settle the questions at | issue, although they know no such convention | Das been, or can be, really offered us, and that it would be revolutionary of both governments, | and either unavailing or fatal to us. Graya | men—men in position and affecting statesman. | ship, are toying with this bubble. ‘The strong must bear the burdens of the weak. Those who would not submit to theslumbrous | influences of the Enchanted Ground, must be aroused by violent shakings, if need be. Those who, like benumbed travelers, sinking in the snow, would give over their journey and lie | down to die must be urged and sustained and encouraged. They must be counselled and re- | proved, not listened to. When the Athenians | epgaged in war essential to the safety of the | State, they deemed it expedient to decreein ad- | vance the punishment of deathto any citizen | who should propose peace on other than the appointed terms. hey thus cnt down the | bridge behind them, and left themselves no alternative but success. The military ener- gies were protected from distraction by the eries of expedients of the timid,‘and stimulated by the necessity of success and the unalterable resolve to win it. We have suspended no such actpal decree over our heads; but if we are brave, and true to ourselves, and worthy the respect of the world and the encomiums of history, we shall actas it we had. We shall allow no discordant veice, no faint spirit, to | come between us and our resolve. Our path 3s @ straight and a plain one. he who would openly abandon his journey, and he who would &void it by the side-gate of conyentions, if not equally culpable, are equally short of their | duty. | The Late Defeat of the Rebel Cavalry— | iE The Losses | {From the Charlottes ville ( tober 16.] It is now ascertained thatim the cavalry fight en Sunday last our losses were mine guns, twelve wagons, and the ordnance train of Munford’s brigade (Wickham’s.)
