AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT CANTEERURY.—The Spanish ballet diver- ‘sement, « La Maja de Seville,” and Szollosy’s @ccentric dance, « L’Angelaise,” were both produced at Canterbury last night Ds erty’s Irish farce, «Life in Limerick,” was produced for the first time also. All these and other acts to-night again. GRovER's THeaTER.—Mrs. Williams’ aston- ishing protean comedy, An Hour in Seville,” and the play, “The Fairy Uircle, or Con O’Uar- cian’s Dream,” are announced for to-night. In the first play Mrs. Williams personates eight distinet ¢! ters, and is excellent in each of i) em. This afternoon, the entertainment for the benefit of the Second Ward drafted men will be # ‘ven here. - Forp’s THEATER.—Maggie Mitchell ALS to-night again In her charming charaster of « darie,” in the beantitul musical drama en- tiled «The Pearl of Savoy.” Maggie is ac- knowledged by all to be charming in any character she assumes, and her performances in this city have always delighted crowded houses. The «other members of the company are very good kh per respective parts. r ——___ THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC ASSOCIATION ‘The regular weekly meeting of the National Democratic Association was held last night at Parker's Hall. In the absence of the Presi- dent, Mr. John Purdy was called to the chair, and Mr. Flinn acted as secretary. The first business in order was the election of new members, and the following named a were proposed and duly elected:— Jharles CO. Tucker, Howard W. Morris, R. L. Edwards, George Washington, Dr. W. R/ Russell, and Professors Powers and Feltha Mr. F. A. Aiken offered a resolution makin, &n appropriation from the fund of the associa- tion for the purchase ofa large transparency to be placed over the main entrance of the hall; the money appropriated to be expended under the direction of a committee appointed Tor that purpose. Adopted. Mr. T. B. Fiorence here mounted the plat- form, and said that he was requested by Judge Mason, who was absent from the city, to read the following letter : “ORANGE, New Jersey, Sept. 21, 1864. “My Dear Sir -—Your kind letter of the 2ith ‘was duly received. Please accept my sincere thanks for it, and allow me toask you to tender my acknowledement to the members of the Association for the honor they have conferred pron me by electing me an honorary mem- “I was extremely gratified to hear of the complete euccess of your ratification meet- z. “Believe me, my dear sir, your obedient ser- ilHon Cras Mason. McCandless, of Philadel- phia who spoke at considerable length, criti- cizing the acts of the Administration. J. E. Norris, Esq., and Gen. Miles then made ape re after which Gen. McCandless en. Miles were elected honorary mem- bere ot the Association. aS B Post Orrice Money ORDER SysTEM. It fs expected that operations under the new postal money order act will be commenced in ihe course of two weeks, most likely on Mon- day, the 16thinst. It was intended that the Bystem should have come into operation on the Ist, and endeavors were made to complete the arrangements for that purpose, but some delay has arisen in connection with the print- ing of the blanks, and other a¥rangements which have necessitated the postponement. Dr. C. F. Macdonald, of the Postal Money Or- der Bureau at Washington, will be the con- troling officer of the department, and his office be the bead office inthe country. At present, nd until some little experierce of the work- ing of the system has been obtained, only one hundred and forty-seven post offices, in vari- ous parts of the country, will be au horised to transact “money order business,” but this mumber will be rapidly increased when tne System has been tested by experience. As to ie real benefits of the measure there can be no doubt, the system having for a long time been in successtul operation in both Great Britain and the Canadas, where it has been an im- mense convenience to the remitters and re- ceivers of smallsums, as well as the source of a handsome profit to the Government, and ‘we have no doubt it will prove the same here. we.
