“THE EVENING STAR. A Woman ty A HORRIBLE SITUATION.—Mrs. William Evans, of Mercer county, OC. W. & woman of 36, has hada difficulty mm her stom~- ach for several years. Lately physicians have decided that the trouble is occasioned by alive and growing sake in the stomach. It hasnow grown co large that it distends the stomach so as to produce a bunch upon the outside as large asaquart bowl. Upon pressing this bunch With the hand the reptile recoils and produces great distress in the stomach. When fish or meat is being cooked in the room, if the snake is not satisfied with food, it rises up in the throat, producing strangulation. When de- siring food it manifests it by rising up in the throat. Physicians see no way in which this snake car be Temoved without certain death to the woman. WZ The upper-tendom of Philadelphia as sembled at the central police station of that city, & few days since, to identify goods stolen by Mrs. Townsend, a first-class fashionable dress-maker, who had been robbing them un- suspected for three years. The detectives had recovered fifty-one cases of goods of all sorts— ehildren’s toys, books, clothing, silver-ware, in short, anything she could carry away from her oe every one of whom she had vice timized. Information having been received at these Headquarters, that many persons engaged in the Clothing and Furnishing business in this District, have frequently sold citizens’ clothes to enlisted men, upon the men exhibiting cer- tificates of discharge from the United States service ; and as suck discharges have, in most cases, proved to be spurious and forged or be- longing to some other person than the one present- ingit. It is therefore * Ordered, That so much of General Order No. 3, issued from these Headquarters, that relates to the sale of clothing to enlisted men, is 60 amended as to prohibit the sale of clothing to any enlisted man upon discharge papers that he may present, until said papers have been examines and a special permit obtained frem these Headquarters.
