MEErINGs 1n GEORGRTOWN— The Ad- dion Exemption Ciub.—Lust night, at quarter past7 o'clock, the Addison Exemption Club met in the Custom-House hall, about one poe and were half the members being galled to order by Mayor Addison, the presi- dent; Mr. R. A. Shekell acting as secretary. ‘The list of members was called by the secre- tary, and all those who were non-residents of the town were permitted to withdraw their money. Mayor Addison briefly addressed the club, nd said with regard to this club it cannot be broken up, because the Members are bound by & written contract to give what each has de- posited. The town meeting Saturday night yaised £5,000. How many will that help! Every man in the Bank of Commerce plan (this club) is as safe from draft as if in the kingdom of heaven. (Applause.| Mr. Addison would like to hear of apian to raise the $21,000, but did rot know how it could be done. On motion of Mr. Marbury, the committee from the town meeting appointed to confer ‘with the club was invited to state their plan. Mr. Hill, for the committee, said they bad no plan to submitexcept to solicit the club to con- tribute a portion of their capital for the purpose of exempting the whole town. Without the aid of this association their scheme would fall to the ground. He was to have gone to Alexandria to purchase substitutes; but as the substitutes ‘would only increase the advantages of this club m case the draft went on, he postponed that visit. The amount subscribea by the town meeting was $5,000; the cash in hand to be sent to Alexandria was $1,500. With the aid of this club the drattcan be aveided. If any blame attaches anywhere, in case the draft is not avoided, it will be to this clab. Mr. Stake regretted that the bitter feeling exists which appears here. The object of the club was to relieve the town, and he did not thirk it rignt that all the morey they had funded should be claimed. He was willing to contribute, upon condition that a guarantee is given that there shall be no draft. Let the money be borrowed, and when the draft is avoided let it be paid from the contribution from the fund. Mr. Hill said that is all that the committee | Give us a portion from that fund to asks. unable us to fill the entire quota. Mr. Deebie asked the Mayor, has the Corpo- Yation a right to appropriate to supply the defi- clency? and did I understand you to say you ‘would sign such a bill! Mayor Addison replied that the Corporation has the same rights as six months ago, whena similar act was done. There has been no change of the charter. Should the appropria- tion be made he would sign the bill. Mr. Deeble said he was willing to be taxed to make up the deficiency. Should ten or twelve thousand be contributed from the club tdund and added to the fund of the meeting, let the Oorporation appropriate the balance. Mr. Marbury thought it impudence for 1,500 men to make such a demand on 16). The re- marks ot Mr. Hill he thought out of place; es- pecially that casting asiur on the club as a gambling concern. paurionse ] Mr. Marbury proceeded at some length to defend the club trom the imputation. Mr. Hill.—“I only made the remark that people began to look on the club as a gambling concern.” Mr. Marbury.—« It makes no difference; itis only asluror inuendo. Of the $6,000 in the town meeting funda very large portion came from members of this club.” Mr. Stake moved the appointment of a com- Mittee of three to draw sach an instrument for each member to sign, contributing as much @3 each chooses from his depositin the fund, tobe used by the town meeting in case the draft is prevented. Mr. Stake’s motion wasadopted, and Messrs. w Cox, J. ©. Marbury and E. J Shoema- ke’ ere appointed, who reported the follow- ang ments: “We, the undersigned, members of the Addi- son Exemption Club, do hereby agree that if the quota of Georgetown can be filled by means of voluntary contribution, so as to prevent a draft in Georgetown, we will contribute from the amounts of our respective deposits in the Bank of Commerce the sums set opposite our names, and we hereby authorize and empower Henry Addison, Henry Wingate and E. J. Shoemaker to draw the amounts so contributed by us for the object aforesaid, only in case the draft shall be entirely arrested and prevented in Georgetown, ahd as soon 4s thatresult shall be effected,” which was adopted. Mr. Shoemaker moved that a person be ap- pointed to wait on the absent members and af- ford each an opportunity to subscribe, which ‘was passed and Mr. Shoemaker appointed. The Secretary reported that the members present, about half of the club, had contribu- ted a little over $4,000. The club then ad- journed. StconD WarbD DRAFT MEETING.—Last eve en adjourned meeting of the citizens of cond Ward was held at Germania Hall, to take further measures in reference ta the draft, Mr.S, A. Posey knew of eighty-seven men ‘who could be obtained it the mouey was paid in by Wednesday afternoon. He was convicted by the name of Jeremiah H. Dinsmore, but the officers know- ing bis attachment to & female in this city set a trep for him, and succeeded im capturing him in Georgetown. The pungies hail from Dorchester county, Eastern Shore, Md., and the captains say they were employing the men for service in dredging for oysters. Major Littler listened to their statements, but con- elnded to retain all for awhile, to see if some- thing else migi t not be developed.
