oo ‘THE EVENING STAR. The Riects nd—Owe Hundred and Twelve Perso ot—Preperty Destroy- ed—Fierce Fighting { The tereign maiis by the Europa bfiag fall | accounts of the fearfal riots in Belfast, Ireland. | The Manchester Guardian says: , «‘Beltast is ma state of siege. The reiga of turing capital of the sister island. Volleys of brickbats, showers of paving stones, bludgeoa blows, sword cats, bayonet thrasts, and gun- shot wounds bave been for some days past the ordinary iucidents of life. The inhabitants of & great commercial emporium have been suc- cessfully endeavoring to reproduce the worst features of agricultural mny brook. whole town has been given up to a faction fight on a grand scale. Protestant and Catho- lic, Orangemen and Natonalists, have closed in desperate and deadly struggle till the wail ot tbe wounded and the dying has filled the air, till several lives has already been sacri- ficed, till the number of the wounded can only be guessed at, till the orderly population is panic stricken and business is altogether at & standstill Above ahundred persons saffering from gunshot wounds are under the care of pri = Medical men, and the hospital sur- geons are busy with amputations all day leng.” The Dublin Freeman's Journal says that up to Wednesday night, August 17, one hundred and twelve persons had received gun shot wounds. Ofthe fightingon Tuesday the North- ern Whig says: “At early morning the mobs of the town ‘Were again ready for battle, and continued at their Gigractul, proceedings throughout the @ay. About four o’clock, a terrible yelling, shouting mob assailed the houses on the Shank- Bill road, Lodge road, Christopher street, Townsend street, Israel street, Broadbent street and the streets adjoining. There were mot fewer than five Bundred houses, mor? or lees, injured, and the mobspared neither friend mor foe. Iu some instances the assailants did not stop short with breaking windows, bat pulled the furniture outside and broke it to at- oms. About five o’clock a riot of a most seri- ous character took place in Brown Square and the neighborhood. The two opposing parties here came into collision, and, stones being pro- vided in abundance by the females, a flerce battle ensued. Both parties appeared to be well supplied with fire-arms. The riot raged for upwards of an hour, in the course of which Six orseven men were badly wounded with shot, and some parties sustained severe frac- turee by being beaten with bludgeons. Atroop of the Fourth Hazzars, about two hundred in- fantry and a large number of constabulary were quickly brought to the scene of action. The crowd were quickly dispersed, but, of course, not until very serious damage had been done. The Unieni Resolved on the Capture of Mobile—Activity and Energy of Admiral Farragut— The Rebel Authorities Pre- paring for the Approaching Struggle, etc. | From the Richmond Whig, August 31.] Since the surrender of Fort Morgan Farragut and Granger have had nothing to do except to prepare for the great job before them—the taking of Mobile. ‘That they will make an effort, and 4 despe- rate one, to reduce the city, is certain, as no officer in the Yankee navy bas more energy, courage, or skill, than Farragut, and these quslities in him will stimulate the Yankee land forces to perform more than their accus- tomed deeds of daring. But all this will not avhil, because the defenders of the city are ‘Working night and day like badgers upon its defenses, and are bringing into the ranks every available man that can pull a trigger or ram & cannon. Major General Jones M. Withers, who has been appointed to the command of all the re- serves of Alabama, has entered upon the work ot organizing and equipping them with an earnestness which gives promise that in the hour of trial they will prove a most efficient element of defense in the approaching struggle. Governor Watts is backing him to the utmost extent of his authority as executive of the State. On the 23d General Higgins tried the guns f the batteries around the city to see that they were in proper position and in working order. While every preparation which skill and patriotism can suggest is being made for the successful defense of Mobile, it will beseen &y the following letter from General Maury to t on. R G. Scott, that he is not, in the meanwhile, unmindful of the safety and com- fort of non-combatants. “MOBILs, Amenst 12.—My Dear Sir: The non-combatants 01 yobile give me more Bs cern than all else. ‘pgbul aM not go away say ey bere nowhere to ke atly by causing planters to notify the edi- Er here that they can relieve ane Snetter so many of this class until 1t may be safe for them to return tothe city.
