LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. CARTERBURY HALL, despite the ratn and storm, was filled last night by the admirers of the graceful performers and comical Ethio- pane who doso much for the amusement of he many who visit the hall. Millie and Clara Fowler and Delehanty and Ward were the ew features last night. ae pee Grover’s THEATER.—The Warren Comedy “Combination had a decidedly unpleasant night dor their opening at Grover’s; but a good audi- ®nce was nevertheless in attendance. That those who ventured ont in the storm were abundantly repaid for their effort there cannot be adoubt. Wm. Warren. Chas. mM, Jo- gephine Orton and Emily Mestayer, supported as they are by the excellent stock company, make an unsarpassed combination. The com- edy ot « Babes in the Woon” and the farce of “First Night” to-night. Forp’s TuaaTre.—John Brougham’s drama The Irish Emigrant,” the protean burletta « Thrice Married,” and the laughable sketch ‘The Returned Volunteer,” are announced for -night at Ford's. To attract a full house it is Scarcely necessary to say more than that the Florences assume the principal parts. But they are sustained by one of the finest com- panies that has been nm Washington in along ‘while and thus the plays are given with unu- sual excellence. Vanieries—Manager Fitz Simmons inau- gurated the Fall season last night with a num- ber of Seplagt abet ail ; 8 variety of new songs, acts and dances and a new sensation play, entitled the Seventh Tnion Martyr Girl. It professes to be 8 pic- ture of certain life in Washington. pe Eas DMkzTING oF THE DemocRaTio AssociaTION— Mr. Tom Florence berates our Special Dutch Re- porter— Words cannot express his indignation at our Special Dutch Reporter—He challenges our Special Dutch Reporter to put his (7. F.’s) re- marks in his (our ‘Special D. B.8) pipe and smoke them. ‘The members of the National Democratic As- @ociation assembled again last night at Par- kker’s Hall in considerable numbers. Mr. Samuel Brereton called the meeting to order, and on his motion Mr. Jas. Haliday was called to preside over the meetings during the @bsence of the president of the Association, «Mr. Mason.) Mr. Haliday, on taking the chair said he was repared toreceive propositions and nomina- ms for membership, but the boek containing the constitution of the Association, which it ‘Was necessary for every member to sign after paying his fee, was absent, and he therefore Suggested that a committee be appointed to unt it up as he apprehended that it was taken away without authority. A committee ought to be appointed to go to Mr. Mason's office and dook up the book. > oak innix thought that Mr. Flinn had the 00k. Mr. P. McGuire moved that the inuendoes @gainst certain parties having the book cease. [Laughter.} Another gentleman remarked that Mr. Flinn ‘was the secretary of the association, and he “was out of the city, which accounted for the book being away. There was considerable contusion now in the Toom, several persons haying the floor at the s&me time, when Mr T.G. Clayton rose to a Point of order which he did not state. Mr. F. Schmidt moved that those who acted @s secre'sries at previous meetings now pay over the money ecllected from new members. Mr. T. Thernley, who presided at a previous meeting. said he had taken in $40, but had not ahe money with him. He had settled a gas bill for the association, and he would bring the Money and bill together. Mr. J.D. Lakenan moved to lay the whole thing on ‘he table. Mr.F. Schmidt c2nld not let the subject drop im that way. Two returns had been made, but there was another to be accounted for. The Chair (Mr. Haliday) thought Mr. Thorn- dy wasasafe man. He lived a mile ortwo ‘way. but it he wanted the money to settle, he <Mr. H.) would lend it to him. After some further discussion, Mr. Schmidt's Motion was agreed to. The Chair then proceeded to receive nomi- nations for membership, and the names of J. ‘V Morgan, John T. Gatewood, and Joseph HH. Hiiton, were presented and declared elected. Mr. T G.Clayton wished tosay a few words in relation to the celebration on the 17th and vthe transparencies. It was necessary that Money should be secured asa guarantee that the cost of making the transparencies could be “come-at-able.”” He had been informed that ahe s4 transparencies would cost $100, and he “wanted to know if the association would give A guarantee to the chairman of the committee to go on with the work and get them made. Some discussion ensued as to how the money wwas to be obtained, when Mr. Haliday and Several other gentleman signified their wil- dingness to subscribe 225 each if necessary. Mr. Thomas Florence, who had just entered the room, took the floor and expressed his pleasure at hearing the chairman and other gentlemen signify their willingness to sub- @cribe. They, remarked the speaker, would aye a celebration worthy of the Association, Worthy of the Chicago Convention, and wor- thy of the nominees r. Florence then proceeded to defend the celebration committee trom an imaginary im- Putation cast upon it, which he (the speaker) did because he was the chairman or mouth- piece of that committee. Mr. Schmidt thought Mr. Florence was too Be native. While some explanation was being made to zeit Mr. Florence right on the question— Mr. P. McGuire made & mouon to adjourn, which did not prevail. y Mr. Florence again took the floor, this time, for the purpose he said of making a suggestion which had been brought to his notice from a meeting held in New York, and which had been caught upand adopted in many places. Judge Dean, at that meeting suggested that “White Boy clabs be formed in opposition to the Black Boy clubs. He thought thagthere might be McClellan White Boy clubs organized in this city and Georgetown. As the campaign was short there was no time to be lost, and it “was best to commence to organize them to- night A McClellan White Boy club would invite all who opposed the black party. We (said Mr. F.) have sympathy for the other race, but there was not a man who would not admit that contrabaads were worse off now than ‘when in slavery. He defied contradiction. At this point Mr. F.took his seat, but no- ticing & reporter sitting immediately opposite to him, he sprang up excitedly, and with wild gesticulations, which threatened to make un- seemly rents in his raiment across those por- tions of his plump periphery where the strain ‘Was severest, he commenced a violent tirade against the Star, and especially its accursed Dutch reporter who had given the remarks of Dr. Schmidt at the previous meeting. Mr. Florence said that the gentleman who criticised his learned friend Schmidt could put bis remarks in his (reporter’s) pipe and smoke them. Words could not express his Mr. F’s) indignation when he read the report in the Star. The speaker referred tothe editor of the Star as a democrat in former years, and said his subsequent course was guided by a dove for pelf. Mr. F. then apologised to the association for transgressing upon its time, andsaid he would return to the purpose for which he originally gotup. He therefore preposed that a commit- tee be appointed to form white boy clubs, aux- ilary to the association, throughout the city. Mr. F.’s proposition was carried, and a com- Mittee of seven appointed. Messrs. Allen and Aiken, delegates to the convention, gave in their ‘experience’ at Chicago, which was of a highly encouraging order to the cause. Three cheers for the nominees, and three for the delegates were given, after which the asso- | | street Dress-maker, or the | ciation adjourned. a SwWaAMPoovLse CASEs.. is morning, Jus- tice Boswell, acting for Justice Gibersen, in the Fourth Ward, had a number of Swampoo- dle cases for trial.
