_THE EVENING STAR. Walking ona Raft. There was a tellow once stepped ont'of the door of a tavern on the Mississippi, meaning to wall a mile up the shore to the next tavern. Just at the landing there lay a big raft—one Of the regular old fashioned whalers—a raft a mile long. Well, the fellow heard the landlord say the raft wes a mile long, and he said unto himself: I will go forth and see this great won- der, and Jet mine eyes behold the timber which the hand of man hath hewn.” So he got on the lower end, and to ambulate over the ‘wood in pretty fairtime. But just ashe walked up the river it walked down, both traveling at about the same fate. When he got to the end ofthe sticks, he found they were pretty near shore, and in sightof a tavern; so he landed and walked straight into the bar-room he had come outof. The general sameness of things took him a little aback, but he looked the land- lord straight in the face and settled itin his own way. “Publican,” said he, “are you gifted ‘with any twin brother, who keepsa similar sized tavern, witha duplicate wife, 8 com- porting wood pile, and correspording circus ills, & mile off trom here?” The tavern keeper ‘was fond of fun, and accordingly said it was just so. “And, publican, have you, among your drygoods, for the entertaimment of man and beast, any whisky of the same size as that of your brother’s!” And the tavern man said that he had from the rising of the suneven to the going down of the same, he had. They took drinks, when the stranger said: “Publican, that twin brother of yours is a mighty fine man—a very fine man indeed. But, do you know, I’m afraid he suffers & good deal with Chicago dip- theria?” “And what is that?” asked the toddy sticker. ‘It is when the truths settles so firm in a man that none of itever comesout. Com- mon doctors of the catnip sort call it lymg. When I left your brothers confectionery there was a raft at his door, which he swore his life was a mile long. Well, publican,I walked that raft from bill to tail, from his door to your’n. Now I know leg time, and I’m just as good for myself as fora hoss, and better for that than any man yon ever did see. I always walka mile in exactly twenty minutes on a good road, and I'll be busted with an overloaded injun gun if I’vebeen more’n ten mmutes comin’ here, stepping over the blamed logs at that. THE OUT-TRAVELED TRAVELER.—A travel- er came very late for his breakfast, and the meal was hurriedly prepared. Thompson feeling the food was not suite up to the mark made all sorts of apologies around the eater, who worked away in silence, never raising his head beyond the affirmative influence of his fork, or by any act acknowledging even the presence of mine host. This salky demeanor rather vexed the landlord. who changing the range of his battery, stuck his thumbs in his arm-holes and said: Now mister confound me if I hain’t made all the apologies necessary and more too, considering the breakfast and who gets it, and I teil you, I have seen dirtier, ‘worse cooked, and a deal of a sight smaller breakfast than this several times.” The weary, bungry one laid down his teols, swallowed the bite in transitu, and, modestly looking up to the fuming landlord, exclaimed: “Is what you say true?” ‘Yes sir.” ‘Well, then, I'll be blamed if you hain’t out-travelled me.” wa The Pennsylvania House of Representa- tives has passed a law authorizing the com- missioners ot Montgomery county to pay boun- ties to drafted men. &7-The people ot St. Louis are tired of drink ing the maddy waters of the Missouri, and insist upon a proper and purifying water works. wv Kansas City is now connected by rail with St. Louis, except for about thirty miles, where the travel is by stage.
