It ‘will be ap agreeable and pleasant affair, as tha best smateor musical talent of the city has volunteered for the occasion. re Tux Focnpry CkuacH.—The corner-stone of the new church edifice to be erected on the site of the “Old Foundry,” which was built in 1316, hoor laid yesterday by the Masonic trater- nity. The occasion drew forth a large assem- blage of ladies and gentlemen, among whom We noticed some of the oldest Methodis‘s in Wasbington, and 4 number of ministers, among them Rev. Dr. Nadal, of Wesley Chapel, (tor- merly in charge cf the Founary;) Rev. Mr. ‘Thrush, ot McKendree; Rey. Dr. Edwards, of Dunbarton street, Georgetown; Rev. Dr. Tas- Fee agen B.N. Brown, Job Lambeth and Mr. The new building, jadging from the plan which was exhibited near the stone, is to be a fine.affair, and will accommodate several hun- dred more persons than the old one, while it ‘will greatly improve the neighborhood. The Masons moved trom their hall shortly after 4 o'clock, in the following order’ Band of Carver Hos: ital; Washington and Columbian Communderies of Knights Templar, in the ele- gant regalia of the order; members of tha sub- ordinate kdges of the District, including a large delegation ot Potomac Lodge, No. 5, of and Tiniem Eedpe, af Aivaau- GeoresoNig’ under a dispensation of the Grand Lodge of the District; and Grand of the Disuict, with their magnificent banner, and accom;anted by McKelvey’s bind, at- tached to the Veteran Reserve Corps, stationed | Which cemes the chief flour, in Alexandria. Pennsylvania avenue to G street, and thence to the site of the church, where the lines were opened and the Grand Ledge gathered round the stone, which, in compliance with the Ma. sonic requirements, was placed at the north- east corner of the foundation. The chaplain of the Templars, Rey. H. N. Sipes, (of East Washington M. E. Church,) offered an appro- priate pray+r, which was followed by the Ma- sonic ode, «« When earth’s foundation first was laid,” suvg by Messrs. Kall, Hodgson, Tabler, Seward and Sheriff, accompanied by Prof. Schell on the seraphine. The officers then ap- proached the stone, and, after applying the coil, plamb and square, reported that they had fone ittrne, The articles mentioned in the Star yesterday, ‘With the auaition of the Constitution of the U. S., the Emaucipation }roclamation, likeness and autozraph of Rey. W. M. D. Ryan, pastor of the church, ring made from the wood ef old Jobn street Church, N. Y., (the first Methodist Caured built in this country,) an abridged his- tory of the church and piece of the old Foun- | dry pulpit were piaced in the stone by the Grand Treasurer, UC. Cammack, Sr., after which | the “corn of nourishment, wine of refresament | and oil of joy” were poured on it, and the | Grand Master, J. Holmead, using the gay- of the Capitol, now the property of Potomac Lodge, No. 5, of Georgetown, pronounced the stone to be well formed, true and trusty.” Rev. Dr. Ryan, the minister in charge of the church. made a brief address complimenting the order and thanking them for their work, and also returned the thanks of the church to & permanent organization, and to institute measures looking to the raising of & battalion, to be mustered into the service expressly for the defence of the District of Columbia, A yeBr ago this excellent company desired to be mustered in, but their offer was deciined, and the consequence was their mambers have de. creased, but a few of them have steadily kept Up the organization, and held themselves te Tesdinees for a call from their captain. On the 3d of this month the company, which nam- bered over one hundred, applied to Gen. An- gur te be mustered in fer the defence of ths District, but they were told to raise a regi- ment, and their apptication tor muster as a company met with a refusal, Gen. Augur at the same time informing them that they woald be called upon if their services were required. Subsequently the company were accepted, but betore the muster was completed the rebels had retreared from Washington, and the order for disbanding al! militia had been issued. It is to be hoped that this effort at reorgani- zation, in order that they may be prepared for any emergency, will be eminently successfal. ‘The members of the company are among the beat young, ten of the city, and they are com- manded by a gentleman of admirable qualifi- cations on his part, and the company has ex- cellent officers througheut. it isa military organization that a young man may well feel pride in belonging to, and we doubt not there will bean animated com- petition for a place in its ranks. BER ISB THE Canal —The damage done to the Ches- apeake and Ohio Canal by the rebels in their late raid, taking the work jn its whole length, is very cerions. President Spates has just re- turned by way of Bedford and Harrisburg, from a trip of observation of the line beyond Harper's Ferry. He found the Antietam aque- duct, twelve miles west of the Ferry, practi- cally “gone up,” the raiders, as he learned, having bad a force of nearly 200 men engaged in its demolition for about forty-eight hours. The aqueduct is a stone structure, and though the piers stand formidabiy, as before, the ma- sonry of the side walls forming the trunk, has hoes thrown off, and large hules also dug through the bottom, or archways. Much damage was done, and all the locks of the canal between Antietam and Williamsport, also comprising that region of the canal from grain and pro- The procession proceeded up ; ducetrade. A great drawback is the diffi- culty of procuring labor to effect the repairs in & reasonable time and at reasonable cost. Se igs SALE or Conrisc ATED PRoPERTY.—The fol- lowing sales of confiscated property in Alex- andria were made Tuesday, in addition to those published in the Star yesterday :—Seven acres of Iand on turnpike leading we from Alexandria, to Otis Smitb, for $115; Joseph Broin’s two houses and lots, west end suburbs ot Alexandria, to J. LANDLORD AND TeNaNT.—Tuesday after- noon Justice Reaver, of George'own, had be- tore him the case of W. B. Eatwisle against Mary Jane Burns—an action to recover pos- session of premises under the late law of Con- gress. OU. M. Mathews appeared for plaintiff, and J. Carter Marbury tor detendant. This case was brought under the third section of the act, which provides that, at the expiration of a tenancy, the owner has a right to bring an action to recover the premises. The first witness called was W. H. Godey, who testified that he sold the premises recently to the plaintiff; that the defendant had occu- ied the house several years, and had paid Eim (Mr G.) monthly, but they had no specific bargain as to whether he was a monthly or yearly tenant. A Mr. Powers testified that he served the notice, but could not testify that it was on the day specified. Mr. Marbury argued that the tenancy was not sufficiently proved t justify a thirty days’ notice; that payment of rent by the month did not imply that it wasa monthly tenancy. Such payments were often made for convenience; and the service of the notice had not been prop- erly proved. he Justice dismissed the case. ‘The following is the bill as it passed Con- gress: That a tenancy at will shall not arise or be | created without an express contract of letting to that effect, and that all occupation, possés- sion or holding of any messuage or real estate, witbout express contract or Jease, or by such contract or lease the terms of which have ex- pired, shall be deemed and held to be tenancies, @nd all estates at will and sufferance, may be determined by & note in writing to quit of thirty days, delivered to the tenant in hand, or | | | to some person of proper age upon the prem- | jses, or in absence of such person or tenant, then such notice may be served by affixing the same to aconspicuous part of the premises, where it may be conveniently read.
