OCAL NEWS. ee AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Forp's Tagatgr—Mr. Ford concludes a “very svccessful week by announcing for the third time the gorgeous spectacle, “The Forty Thieves.” The entertainment has proven an attractive one, because no effort has been spared by the management to make it so. This must be evident to all, whether they consider -the cast, the scenery, the appointments, the ‘music, or aught else connected with the proper Tepreeentation of the dramatization of this in- “teresting Oriental tale, Grover’s THEATER —Miss Kate Vance and the fine performers who have throughont this ‘Week supported her, have been immensely suc- ‘cessful with «Mazeppa,” dramatized from Lord Byron's splendid creation. Each night this week thissplendid theater has been crowd- ‘e4,and Mr. Sinn, temporary lessee, certainly deserves the thanks of amusement lovers for ‘the fine manner in which the play has been” ‘produced. CANTERBURY.—The attractions at this resort Are of such a character as toinduce theatten- dance of exceedingly large audiences, who ever fail to give deserved applause to Mariet- ta Rave), the corps of Ethiopians and the fine elope who so well do their duty in de ineating the different characters in the new drama, “ Bushwackers of the Potomac.” Txe Grace Cuvgcn Fate has been in suc- cessful operation at Island Hall all of this ‘week, and has new features of attraction night+ ay. The hall is so well ventilated as to make It a very desirable resort there warm evenings; Znd, indeed, one forgets the heat when be. ‘Ing ¢ntertained by the agreeable ladies in at- tendance. The week could not be better closed than by a visit here. Opp Fzttows’ Hatt Fare.—This fair, for the benefit of a home for friendless women and children of wounded soldiers, who come Dere in search of relatives, will shortly close. As the cause is a good one, it is desirable as gnuch money as possible should be realized. > THe Witey-Brown Casz.—The case of obm and Emily F. Wiley against Marshal °OWD Was resamed yesterday before Judge Wylie, in the Circuit Court, when— ohn Roberts and Wm. Giles testified as to a family named Phillips having lived near Elk- ton, Cecil county, Md., some years ago, and recognized Mrs. Brewn as one of the dangh- ters, who left that place when she was Is or 19 years of age. Mrz. Ryan. sworn.— Witness and Mrs. Wiley “Were intimately acquainted, and witness was Well acquainted with Mrs. Brown. Witness heard Mrs Brown say frequently before Til- Jotson’s death that he was not the father of Emily. Witness testified that in copying a Jeter for Mrs. Brown there was a passage ‘which stated that Dr. Miller, of Baltimore, was the father of Emily, which, when she (wit- ness) read it to Mrs. Brown, the latter stated Was true. Also heard Mrs. Brown say that Emily was not Tillotson’s child—that sbe was thavkful that she had none of his blood in her | veins. Mrs. Brown stated that when she was | first introduced to Tillotson she was about to leave the city, and at that time Emily was @bout three or four years old. Mrs, Brown aiso told witness that Dr. Miller, of Baltimore, was the father of Emily, and that she (Emily) eould baye been well provided for had she given her up to him. On cross-examination, witness stated that the letters she copied for Mrs Brown were #nonymous—One of them being directed to Mrs. Brown and the other to Mr. Brown. Witness also testified that Mrs. Brown said she took the name of Brown from asea captain who died | ateea. After Mr. Brown died Emily said that | she bad a box of sil ver marked with the initials | «+E. F.B.” given her by Dr. Miller, which had | been remoulded, the silver having originally borne the initials +E. F. M.” Witness never | kept up any intimacy with Emily atter she lett school, 2nd witness does not recollect that she ever said or wrote that Tillotson Brown was the tather of Emily. Three letters were produced which were identified by witness who explained that they | “were written for Mrs Brown, who was absent | At the time, and had requested her (witness) to | ‘write to Emily, who was at sciool at the | time. Wm. J. O’Brien sworn.— Witness became ac- quainted with Mrs. Brown in 1559, and stopped | at the house for some time. Witness had heard Mrs. Brown say before Tillotson’s death that | he was not the grandfather to Emily’s chil- dren. Witness had also heard Emily 3 call meold Dr. Miller's daughter.” acted as Mrs. Brown’s counsel formerly, and he was examined at some length as to his pro- ceedings before the Orphans’ Court in her be- half, piel ot ASE PUBLIC SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.—The writ- ten examimations of the Intermediate Schools took place yesterday. One school was exam- ined orally, viz’ Primary No.1, Third District, under control of Miss Josephine S. Bird, and which was examiaed by Dr Walsh. There Was 51 pupils (male and female) present, there being 60 on the roll. This school is held in the basement of New Jerusalem Church, North apitol street, between B and C; and inthe | same room Miss Addie Thompson’s school, | Seconaary No.5, Third District, is weld. The room is usually dark, and in wet weather very damp. We have heretofore spoken of the un- fitness of this locality fora school room; but xs a scbool of this grade is absolutely needed in this section, and as a different room for scbool purposes is not to be obtained at present, | the trustees are constrained to content them- selves with it for & year more at least. The examination yesterday was very good, and all of the pupils conducted themselves, so far as oraer was concerned. in a manner creditable, | hot only to the teacher, bnt to their own sense {| ofdecorum. The school displayed good pro- | ficiency in all the classes, but the second and | third classes appeared to be better posted, so | far as they had gone, than did the first class; | and it must have been evident toali that the | temale pupils were more ready in answering questions than were the males. Miss Bird is a careful, thoreugh teacher, as was shown by the readiness with which the pupils were able to give reasons, the why and wheretore, for all answers made. Miss Bird js a Washingto- nian, was educated here, has had over three years’ experience in teaching. The sub- poard controlling her district are fully satis- tied with her. On Monday next the following schools will be examined, viz: First District—Primary No. 1, Miss Red- mond teacher, by Mr. Brown; No. 2, Miss Ro- binson teacher, by Mr. Wilson. cond District—Primary No. 1, Miss Morse teacher, by Mr. Rhees; No. 2, Miss Flenner teacher, by Mr. Miller; No. 3, Miss Rodier teacher, by Mr. Wight. = Third District—Primary No. 2, Miss Hill teacher, by Dr. Walsh; No. ‘i, Miss Awkward teacher, by Mr. Ferguson; No. 4, Miss Wheat- | ley teacher, by Dr. Davis; No.5, Miss E. A. ANen teacher, by Mr. Tustin. Fourth District—Primary No. 1, Miss J. A. Lee teacher, by Mr. Murtagh: No. 3, Miss A. E. Adams teacher, by Mr. Holmead; No. 4, Miss Van Horn teacher, by Mr. Ellis. —$—— VAGRANTS.— Within two years past the po- lice magistrates have had to deal with a great pumber of vagrants and topers, who comefrom other cities, and among them are many habit- ual customers of the station houses, who are | too worthless to send to the workhouse, where they become a cost to the corporation; but the Imagistrates are obliged to commit or dismiss them. Yesterday morning John Fitzsimmons, | who bas a dread of the, workhouse, was taken before Justice Clayton, for being drunk. The Justice asked him if he would stay awayfrom the Second Ward if dismissed. Fitzsimmons said he would make oath that he would. The Justice accordingly swore him to keep away trom the Second Ward for three months, and sveleased him. preeee eines Tuerowine Muriatic Acrp.— Yesterday, officer McUolgan arrested Larry Cratchett for thre wing muriatic acid on the dress of a young lac) named Eila Davis. The affair occurred at ‘ne corner of 3d street and the avenue last bikht. Cratebett is 15 or 16 years of age, and it @ppears from the evidence that he is the leader 01 @ gang of younger boys, who indulge in mischievous pranks, to the annoyance of the neighborhood. Brutcnett isin the employ of ‘Thomas Thompson, gas fitter, and the acid is used mm the business. Justice Kinsey held him to baid for court. ————-__ A Wire Beater.—Last night, Officer Mor- ‘ris arrested Thomas Sullivan for beating his wife, aod locked bim up in the Fourth Ward s'ationqpouse. This morning Justice Giber- son sent him to jail for court on the charge of Assault and battery; and-also in default of bail io keep the peace. Sallivan is a powerful young man, but is Addicted to drunkenness, And on several pre. vious occasions beat his wife and broke the furniture in the Rouse.
