Abont this time Lieut. W. H. Terrell, 1st RR. ., demanded his pass, which he re- fused to show, at the same time using disre- spectful language. Lieut. T. gave orders to Sergt. W. L. Whitney, of the patrol, to take dim to theguardhouse, on the charge of being drunk and disorderly, and he was taken in custody, the sergeant taking him down the Avenue, and Lieut. Terrell, who apprehended that there would be trouble, followed them. Several times, in passing saloons, Early at- tempted to get away from the sergeant, and as | they were passing the door of Emrich’s Hotei, 11th street, below the Avenue, he suddenly | drew his revolver, turned and fired at Lieut. ‘Terrell, the ball passing through his neck, near the jugular vein. Before he had time to fire & second time Sergt. Whitney wrested the pis- tol from him, and fired one shot at him, and Lieut. Terrell, notwithstanding his severe ‘wound, drew his pistol and fired six shots in rapid succession, three of which took effect, one in the left breast, another in the shoulder blade, and the third in the back, striking the spinal column, and glancing inwardly. Early ‘was secured and taken to the guardhouse, where his wounds were dressed by Dr. Keas- by, who also attended to Lieut. Terreil’s inja- ries. Early was sent to Stone Hospital. and Lieut. It as better for agricultural purposes than any other we ever saw, being made almost exclu- sively from feeding grain, Its cost, including hauling to the vessel, is about 45 cents per load of say three-tourth of a ton, and vessels trans- port and land it anywhere around the Chesa- peake and its navicable tributaries at about <0 cents per load. The editor of the Star has already used a thousand tons of it with great advantage, and designs using much more this season. So he speaks trom experience iu thus urging farmers to avail themselves of the op- portunity it affords tnem to fertilize their jJands at unusually small expense. Mr. E. IN Banc—Chixf Justice r presiding—On Saturday, the United © agt. Wm. Shields was heard. The prop- erty of Shields had been condemned under the confiscation law by the District Court, Judge ‘Wylie, on the ground that he had participated in the rebellion. Shields had, however, re- turned to Maryland, but had not signified his return to allegiance. The decision of the Dis- trict Court was appealed from, and the case came up before the court in banc, and in addi- tion to the exceptions an oath of allegiance was filed by the petitioner. The District Attorney | argued that this oath did not conform to the President's amnesty proclamation. Mr. Shields amended the petition so as to express that the oath was taken in the spirit of the proclama- tion, with the object, as far as he was con- cerned, to restore the authority of the United States. DEAF NESS, CATARRH, and diseases of the EAE, THROAT, AND AIR PASSAGES. De. LIGHTHILL, from 34 St. Mark Place, New York, Author of “A Popular Treatise on Deafness, « Letters on Catarrb,” Will bein WASHINGTON, On MONDAY, Jans 6th, and can be conculted At tha Egsitt Hovse tor ONE WERE until Saturday evening, June lita, on DEAFNESS, CATARRH, And all the various diseases of the EAR, THROAT, ANB AIR PASSAGES. Testimonials. From the Rev. Fred. S. Jewell, Professor of State Normal School, Albany, N. Ye This may certify that I have been, since 1514, subject to violent periodical attacks of catarrh, marked by 8 highly inflamed conditien of the lining membranes of the cayities of the head, producing a most distressing species of pead- ache for days at a time, wholly incapacitating me from business, and: during the paroxysms confining me tothe bed. Insome instances the inflammation has extended to the teeth, occa- sioning toothache ; to the threat, producing hoarseness and partial luss of voice; and and twice it has so affected the left eye as to con- fine me for a month or more to adarkened room. Theseattacks have been accompanied by strong febrile symptoms; by stoppagé’ot the head, and, in the firct stages, by watery discharges from the nose, subsequently becoming acrid and yellow, and towards the close ofthe attack becoming bloody and purulent. L have tried Medicines of almost every kind; external ap- plications to the head. such as camphor, gin- ger, hot bandages, and fomentations of hot vinegar; snuffs of some half a dozen kinds, and other catarrhal preparations, together with in- ternal remedies, suoh as alteratives, cathartics andemetics. These have produced no change in the occurrence or character of the disease, and, in most cases, with little or no temporary relief. Ihad come, at length, to believe the disease to be practically beyond either cure or material alleviation. Under these circumstances I was led some five months ago, to make atrial of Dr, Light- hill’s treatment. His method at once eprroyed. itself to my judgment, as simple, philosophi- cal, and likely to be effective. Notwithstand- ing the disadyantages under which he labored, in dealing with a disease of such long stand- ing, aggravated by nervous debility and dys- pepsia, and constantly induced by the acci- dents of my professional labor, I found the treatment reaching the disease as it had never been reached before, and producing such a modification and alleviation of its character. as I had supposed impossinie. 1 chronicle the results thus. Although 1 have been situated several times, so that I should formerly have believed a severe attack of my catarrh inevita- ble, I have escaped thus far; the symptoms of threatened attack have been very light, and have vielded to the remedies employed by Dr. Lighthill, without need of recourse to the old hot fermentations, or emetics; and the dischar- ges from the head have resumed the original and natural condition. I count upona com- pletecure. ThatI have been able, however, to obtain so material a relief is to me a cause of gratitude, In that alone, I am repaid for whatever the treatment may have cost me. I make this statement unsolicited, as ameans of acknowledging my obligations to Dr. Light- Bill's method of treating eatarrh, and witha view to aid any who may have suffered from that disease, in forming @ just opinions of its merits, and its probable utility in their own case. FRrepbk. S. Jews xt, Prof. State Normal School. Albany, N. Y., March 14, 164. Catarrh Cured. From Rer. R. P. Russell, Lynn, Mase. I have been much troubled with Catarrh of the worst type for some twenty years. It gradually grew worse, producing cough and hoarseness, destroying the senge of smell, and breaking down my general health tosuch a degree as to compel me to resign my pastorate, and suspend public speaking. I made diligent uee of the useful remedies. such as snuffs of different kinds, nitrate of silver, tar water, olive tar, and inhalations, but without any salutary effects. Last sam- mer I heard of Dr. Lighthill's successful mode of treating catarrh, visited him, and put my- self under his treatment. I began immediate- ly to improve, and this improvement has gone on to the present time. My catarrh has gradu- ally melted away, my cough has disappeared, my voice has become natural, and lam once more able to preach the blessed Gospel. Let me advise all troubled with catarrhal difficul- ties to apply to Dr. Lighbthill. P. R. RUssErt, Lynn, Mass., Feb. 1, 162.
