Olements, who, in doing so, stated that he had called the meeting by advertis@ment in the Chronicle and Star, for the “loyal voters in fayorof John H. Semmes for Mayor.” He, how- ever, had no particular choice as to the ward ticket, except that he wanted men on it who would represent their constituents, and look to interest of the ward and city. Some might think him egotistical for patting the notice in the paperz, aud all he could say in answer was | thathe thought that it was to his interest to | calla meeting of the friends of a gentleman who is an ornament to the city. Mr. Clements proceeded to defend Mr. Semmes from the charge ke said had been made against him of voting against the workingman’s interest in the Board of Aldermen: and in conclusion re- commended thut ihe meeting should proceed to an organization by selecting presiding officars. r. J., who is the founder and direcior of the school. They met at the school- house in the morniag, where « beautiful May altar had been erected, and from thence went in procession to the church, where mass was celebrated. The girls were all clad in white, and wore white flowing veils and crowns. They made a really fine. appearance. After mass they repaired again to the school-rooms, where Father Wiget was made the recipient of some very tasteful and valuable presents; after which the children, with their parents and friends, partook of a tempting and bouatifal yepast prepared for the occasion. After some -houre spent in singing and recreation they repaired to their homes, with ;countenances clearly indicative of the happy scenes in which they had just participated. The arrangements of the festival were under the sap=rvision of Sister Lucy, under whose care the school has reached a point of excellence rarely equalled. i REARS Tue GROWTH oF THE C1TY.—The following table, prepared by Mr. Brooke, Clerk of the Board ct Assessors, is of interest: Wasuinoton, D. Bartholow, the extensive dealer in agricultural implements, hardware, &c., and who isa whole ‘eam himself in the business way, aseverybody in this community is aware. ‘The horses are beauties, the harness worthy of such animals; and the carriage (built for Mr. Bartholow by Messrs. Macdonald & McDade, 504 6th street) ie, we think, one of the very best pieces of workmanship of the kind, in all par- ticulars—model, wood-work, iron-work and painting—we have ever seen. In beauty and finish itis not surpassed by the workmanship of the best establishments of the Country else- where, and in strength and faithfulness of exe- ention, throughout, it is infinitely superior to the average of northern carriage work. Itisa credit to the city and its mechanics. aeenlGinp——ean- Kipwett & HENDERSON.—We call special attention to the advertisement of Meszrs. Kid- well & Henderson, 367 D street, near 9:h. INTEREST WILL BE PAID IN COIN, on Bonés of not over ene hundred dollars annually and on all other Bonds semi annually, The in- terest is payable on the firstdays of March and September in each year. As these Bonds, by Act of Congress, are EXEMPT FROM MUNICIPAL OR STATE TAXATION, their value is increased from one to three per cent. per annum, according to the rate of tax levies in various parts of the country. At the present rate of premium on gold they pay OVER EIGHT PER CENT. INTERSST in currency, and are of equal convenience as a per- manent or temporary fnvestment, It is believed that no securifles offer so great inducements to lenders as the various descrip- tions of U.S. Bonds. In all other forms of in- debtedness, the faith or ability of private parties or stock companies or separate communities only is pledged for payment, while for the debts of the United States the whole property of the country is holden to secure the payment of both principal and interest in coiu. These Bonds may be subscribed for in sums from $50 up to any magnitude, on the same terms, and are thus made equally available to the smallest lender and the iargest capitalist. They can be converted into money at any moment, and the holder will-have the benefit of the interest. The Funded Debt of the United States on which interest is payable in gold, on the 3d day of March, 1864, was $763,965.00. The interest on this debt for the coming fiscal year will be $45,937,126, while the customs revenue in gold for the current fiscal year, ending June 3th, 1864, has been so far at the rate of over $100,000,000 per annum. It will be seen that even the present gold reve- nnes of the Government are largely in excess of the wants of the Treasury for the payment of gold interest, while the recent increase of the tariff will doubtless raise the annual. reeeipts from cus- toms on the same amount of importations, to ‘$150,000.00 per annuin, The authorized amount of this loan is $209,000,000 Instructions to the National Banks acting ag loan agents were not issued until March 28, but the amount of Bonds reported sold at the U.
