Information has been received at this Depart- ment from Mr. C. O. Leach, the Consul of the United States at St. John’s, Newfoundland, of the passage of an act by the present General Assembly “which,” as the Consul remarks, “provides that hereafter ali vessels entering this port ehall pay a tonnage fee of five cents per ton, im addition to the twenty-four cents now charged for light dues, which, with the pilotage, will make the port charges amount to abont thirty-eight to forty cents per ton.” The following sections of the act are printed for general information : 15. 1t shail be lawful for the Governor in Council to direct the appropriation to [ood dept poses of the said begs rad of the procee any duty that may be laid upon coal aeored into St. John’s. 16. The following rates shall be paid by all yersels entering and clearing at the custom- house at the port of St. John’s, and the pro- ceeds applied to the support of the Company, namely: 1. ‘By all vessels entering or clearing at tha custom-house upon, or from, foreign voyages, a rate of five cents per ton of their register ton- nage, tou be paid the time of their first entry or clearan 2. By an vessels clearing at the custom- mouse for the sealing voyage, a rate of five cents per ton of their register tonnage, to be paid at the time of such clearance. 3. By all vessels engaged in’coasting voyages or ‘voyages to the Labrador, a rate of five cents per ton of their register tonnage, to be paid at their firstentry or clearance atthe said custom- ; house in each year. Section 17. Such rates shall be paid at tha times aforesaid by the masters or owners of auch vessels, and shall de collected and recov- ered in-the same manner @nd by the like means &s light dues sre now collect and recovered iu the said port: Provided that no vessels shall be compelled to pay water rate oftener than once in one year, nor to @ greater amount, whatever her tonnage may be, than twenty dollars, Secticn 18.
