een THE EVENING STAR. Whe New Cavairy ( ommander on the Pete- mac. {From the Dayton (Ohio) Journal } Major General Phinp H. Sheridan fora loug time c mmanding @ division in the T.veaetia aimy corps (McUook.) has been appointed Chief ot Cavairy of the Army ot ibe Potomac. This iseplendid news. There is not s more éassbing, gallant, eapable, obstinate fighting efficer in the army of the Unied States, Gen- era) Sheridan is the gallant son of an Irish- man of Perry county, though himself a Bative of the United States; born on an Ameri- ean ship. under the American flag, for which he has fought so gloriously, while his parents were emigrating from the Emerald Isle to the land ct liberty. At seventeen he was sent to Weet Point, where his Milesian pnugnacity as- serted itselfeo conspicuously that it cansed him copsiderable trouble with the faculty, but Be fought his way throngh and graduated hon- orably. He first: distinguished himse!f ander General Rosecrans, who always expressed for him the most enthusiastic admiration. «General Sheridan is a soldier, every inch of him,” said the General: “I'd give years of my life to have half a dozen such division eommanders in my army.” At Stone river he distinguished himself so conspicuously that he ‘was rewarded with his present rank. A nobler and more terrible battle than he fought with Ris eplendid division in the darkness ef the Stone river cedars is not recorded in military hietory, and although finally driven back by overwhelming numbers, who swarmed around his unprotected flanks, he brought out the rem- Bant of his division in perfect order, though shorn of one thousand seven hundred and nine- ty-six of its brave men. It was under him that gallant Sill, and Roberts and Shaeffer were Billed in the fore front of the batule, leaving him withont a brigade commander. Subsequently, in the advance on Bragg at Tullahoma, Chickamauga and at Mission Ridge, he added sto his laurels. He is now about thirty-two years of age and unmarried. All the able officers of the old army ofthe Cumberland have always regarded him as the rising man of that army, and so tar as our knowledge of the officers of the army for cay- alry extends, we bave no hesitation iu saying that the selection of General Sheridan for Chief | ef Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac was the best that could have been made from the United ‘tates armies.
