LOCAL NEWS. _- AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT, Forp'’s THEATER.—Mr. Forrest is announced as “ King Lear” to-night again and for the last tume: and the announcement will of acertainty bring out afull house, this being a part in which he is unrivalled. He will be sustained by McCulloch, Mrs. J. H. Allen, Miss Gray, and others, Grover’s THEATER.—For the last time posi- tuvely (says the advertisement) the Irish scenic drama « The Colleen Bawn” will be performed to-night. That its representation will give satisfaction is unquestionable, for the members of the hg very Company are well up ia the parts, and the scenery and music is of the tirst order. CaAnTEnBuRY.—“The House that Jack Built” is still one of the great attractions here, and Mr, Lea has not only a good company of pan- tomimists, but his excellent company of c)me- dians and vocalists prove to be of no mean = ee the baigitt hall line of business. ‘here! » 2 sple: entertainment expected to-night. sibbae Mines Varietizs.—Lina Windel, Augusta Louisa Wailby, Fanny May, Kittie Mae. gie Vernon, Kerns, lompson and a it of others will appear to-night ina splendid billof song. dance, pantomime and Ethiopian eccen- ticity. Go see them and laugh. MxTROPoLiTan HaLL.—The laughable mu- sical sketch of “Jenny Lind” is one of the attractive features here just now. But the songs, dances and burlesques are well worth seeing, and occasion much amusement, PuBLic Scoot ConcERT.—A concert of vocal music, for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase aad pe for the grammar schools ot this city, will be given by the pupils of the Schools to-night at the Smithsonian Institution. The concert will be under the direction of Prof. Daniel, the music teacher, and as it is his opin- ion that the study of music in the schools will be materially aided by the possession of these instruments, all interested in the welfare of the Schools should purchase tickets, and help the cause along. CaTHoLic Farr.—At Pompeian Hall,George- town, an admirably conducted fairfor the ben- efit of the Catholic free schools of that city is in successful operation. Itis well worth visiting. ANOTHER Farr.—At Odd Fellows’ Hall, 7th street, the ladies of Dr. Smith’s (Fourth) Pres- byterian Church are holding a fair of a very interesting character. Disso.vine Vi8ws.—Another exhibition of phantasmagorial dissolving views will begiven at Dunbarton-street Methodist Uhurch,George- town, to-night. — MEETING OF THE COACHMAKERS.—An ad- journed meeting of the Journeymen CUoach- makers’ Society was held last evening at the «+ Delmonico,” to take into consideration the propriety of asking for an increase of w: oat the President, Mr. D. D. Clark, in the chair, and James F. Crown secretary. The committee appointed at the last meeting to confer with the bosses in reference to an ancrease of wages, reported that they had had & conference with some of the bosses, but no definite arrangement was made. The committee had no doubt, from what the bosses said, that if the demands of the society were reasonable the bosses would willingly pay tig increase. ‘The order of the evening—the consideration of the resolutions offered at the last meeting— was taken up, the question being on the resolu- tion ot Mr. irving, offered es a substitute, re- questing the bosses to raise all wages below two dollars per day to that sum; above that sum, an advance of ten per cent.; pieceworkers to regulate their own prices, according to the quality of the work; leaving it optional with those whose wages have recently been raised, whether they make the demand or not, and re- questing an answer og or before the 23d inst. Mr. Irving said that some thought that ten per cent. was not enough advanee but itshould be recollected that the wages of nearly every ‘workman had been advanced within the past two years and that the society was in its in- fancy and therefore could not well sustain a strike. He believed that but few it any of the members wanted a strike. A Mr. Mason moved to amend the’ resolution by inserting 15 per cent. He thought 10 per cent. was entirely too small an advance, and he believed that the bosses would give the tormer as willingly as the latter. Mr. Clark (Mr. Brooks in the chair) was in favor of the 10 per cent. demand and thought that the bosses would retuse to pay any more. ‘The society should act with caution, and not make a demand which would cause @ strike. ‘The bosses had thus far acted well ¢with the men, and had increased their pay so that now the inferior hands receive $12 per week, while two years ago the best did not receive above that sum. Mr. Mason did not think the demand for 15 per cent. would cause a strike. Mr. Clark stated that its effect would be to drive manufacturing out of the city. Mr. Mason said that most of the work was repairing, which could not be driven out. ir. Clark replied that a greatamount ef new ‘work is being made here, and he honed nothing ‘would be done to compel bosses to go to deal- ing in Northern work in preference to having their work done under their own eyes. Dir. Mason’s amendment to insert 15 per cent. ‘was lost. ‘The resolution of Mr. Irving was adopted. After the transaction of some unimportant business, the meeting adjourned. —— igs FEES AND EMOLUMENTS Or District Orri- CTALS.—The letter of First Comptroller Taylor, in relation to the fees and emoluments of the Attorney and Marshal of the United States for the District of Columbia, and the clerks of said District, for the year ending December 31, 1863, also, the amount allowed to each of said officers for deputies, clerks, office rent, and other inci- dental expenses during the same period, says, among other things, that Marshals of the Dis- trict have not made returns of emoluments derived from fees allowed for the food of pris- onersin jail. During 1963, said fees amounted to £32,736 60, but what profit these yielded I have no means of knowing. It is provable *hat the emoluments derived from transporting convicts to Albany have also been omitted. «In the statement of the clerk’s emoluments, is own personal compensation has not been deducted, because the law has not expressly and clearly fixed the rate, and I have not had time t> consider the matter. The @terk of the former Circuit and Criminal Court was allowed to retain the fees earned, $6,000 a year. “The Attorney General has employed an assistant to aid the District Attorney, with a salary, at first, at the rate of $1,500, which has been increased to $2,000. It appears by the tables submitted that the total iees of Ward H. Lamon in the District, Circuit, Crirainal, and Supreme Courts, for 163, were $14,858.26, from which is to be de- ducted allowances to Geo. W. Phillips, (depu- ty,) $3,000; Wm. A. Mulloy, (deputy) 2,000; obert Lamon, (clerk) #2,000. Marshal’s maxi- mum of compensation, $6,000. Balance due United States, $2,610. ‘The total fees and emolumentsof the District Atverney, for 1863, are $11,009.32. His maxi- mum of compensation, $6,000. Balance, $5,009. 32, paid into the treasury. @ total fees and emoluments of the clerks of the courtsin the District of Columbia, for the year 1563, are: To John A. Smith, $1,761.24— deduct $1,229; for subordinate cleér! twoR. J. J. Shad are selling at from 50 te 75 cents per ‘pair, and herrings at 20 cents per dozen. The appearance of King street is much im- ‘proved by the widening of the pavements, and the removal of awning posts, and other ob- structions. A row of shade trees planted at the edge of the side walks on both sides, from the river to Hooff’s run, would make it one of the handsomest streets to be found any where. — Gazette 20th Mach of the whisky that is smuggled into this city reaches us ugh opearip Creek, boats being able to up and discharge their cargoes on the h inside the guar‘. ‘The creek should be looked after. § f whisky reminds us thata distinguish geon recently made an examination of a keg of the article seized afew Gays since, and declared upon his honor that one g! of it would set an able-bodied man insane, so villainous were the compounds from which it was prepared.
