Rebel Brutality—Th 1 clad and Gun-boats on the Reanoke—Ramors of & Norroik, VA., Aprii 19.—Refagees arriving this morning from Plymortn, N. C., report that fighting commenced there at half-past four on Sunday afternoon. The revels came down, in force and ‘attacked Fort Gray, which is about 8 mile from the town, on the Roanoke river. They planted aheavy battery on Potk’s Island, about a half a‘thile distant, and kep* up acontinuens fire, during which they enc- ceeded in cutting away the flag mast at the fort. This was replaced and the «(Stars and S:ripes” again floated defiantly in the face of the foe, and gallenily did the ferce within defend it. The rebels then advanced slowly forwa7d, gradualty and carefully ‘feeling their way up to within & short distance of the fort, when they made an impetuous charge. They were received with a galling fire, which .t Moped their ranks and caused them to fall back, A or and again they rallied and endeavored (o' the citadel by force, but to no purpose: pace time they were ro repmieed with featel planar Pa retired, Artillery. still keeping up e fire. Their much boasted iron ram,‘ with four other gunbeate, had moved down the river to: the obstrnesions within six miles of the town, ) to co-operate with the land forces. Therebel force menacing Plymouth is re- ported as being from ten to fifteen thénsand strong, the cavalry being under the eommarid ot General Ransom. Gen, Wessels is jm command of the Union, forces. He has Plymouth well fortified, and it is pronounced fmpregnable. The brave Union soldiers who are there defending it will ve far more valient than the enemy. In front of the town are stationed several’ gunboats. Théy have done'good service’ and will continne todo more. ‘They have had to) stand. ajread) ena, much of the brunt of the en-. gagement. The rebels’ oriitlery firs lias been) ape on them, it is said that on the gun-" boat Bombshell se: have been killed and Wounded. Allthecitizens haye left Plymonth; and the most of them are qnartered on Roanoke Island. Several of the Rebel shells fell in the town. During the engagement the rebels captured member of the 2d North Carolina loya: reg’ ment, who formesly had deserted, they allege. from the 7th rebel regiment of that State; and: itis reported that he was bung on the spot, without even so much as thé form of a trial. This is more of rebel brutality, and it appears that & new malignity is developing itself in the breasts of the minions of Jeff. Davis. It is rumored that the rebels have also mae & demonstration simultaneous with this in the vicinity of Newbern. The Confederates have & great anxiety to redeem the State of North Carolina, as they see that it is fast receding trore their grasp. Thongh they may use exer- tions almost superhuman, they will find that Union arms can cope successfully with any torce that they may bring.
