Mr. S. Phillips appeared for diefense. In each case the testimony consisted in the identifying the property by the owners, and the proof that it was obtained irom ihe ac- eused or from his premises. The first case wa: against Mary Lazenby for St Aling spoons belonging to A. R. Potis, Me- tropol’an Hotel. Mr. R. R. Thompson identi- fied he spoons as the property of Mr. Potts. Officers Simonds and Voss testified that they seer chee the accused and took the spoons trom er. Nextcame Richard Lazenby for larceny of sundry cigar boxes, the cigars having been taken out; one box of cigars; one office revoly- ing chair, from Kirg & Burchell. The proper- ty was found in Lazenby’s house, and was Tally identified. Thesame for larceny of carpenter’s tools from R.B. Reed & Brother. Tie same for the larceny of a large lanthorn trom John Talty. In all three the preperty wae identified. Bacon & Uo, corner of t reet and Penusylyania avenue. He gave arm of fire, and in a few moment +c by Mr. Peabody, Chiet of th nt, and patrolman Williams. They roke into the store, and setting a guard to prey: it improper persons from entering, went the upper story, and found that the fire had becun in Spile of matches. The Perseverance and Franklin companies were soon on the ground and at work. The fire was extinguished - without damage, except to the matches and a few reams of w rapping psper. The most of the «<lamuge was done by the v. :ter thrown by the Perseverance company, which flowed down | into the lower store rooms, and saturated a considerable quanty of sugars, flour, and other articles. The firemen entitled to credit for ieir promptuess and zeal. And the police also, who, by their proper arrangement and vigilance, prevented greatloss by thieves, who were constantly pressing to enter the store. ‘The hose bursted in the house, which greatly increased the damage. The apparatus was stopped the moment the fire was extingdished. It is supposed that as the matches were of the kind known as block matches, which ignite ‘with a slight touch, that arat ing over whem may have caused the fire. Williams, Esq, assing by the corner of Seventh street and nnsylyania avenue, was struck on the fore- head with & stone thrown froma crowd of boys, white and black,and was badly hurt.
