He was not regarded as in a dangerous condition until Sunday last, “when it appeared that the powers of nature were giving way, and tnat he was closing in the fival conflict, which he met with Christian dortitude and resignation. Mr. Gideon has been a resident of Washing- ton for sixty years, and during this long period constantly and efficiently identified himself ‘with the interests, the growth, and the pros- perity of the city. Having, by his capacity uad industry acquired a large private fortune, he wes in a condition to foster and promote all public charities, and to serve in many stations of public responsibility tor the welfare of the community. For the past thirty years Mr. Gideon has been an active and prominent member and of- Nicetbearer in the Presbyterian Church, ever xeady with open heart and hand to all good ‘works. It was under his roof that the Fourth Presbyterian Church, on Ninth street, was organized, and he ever gave to the cause of Christianity a warm and undivided support. ‘He died in connection with the First Presby- rerian Church, where his children were bap- tised, and to whicb he turned in his last days with many memories of the past. Mr. Gideon was one of the early members of the Columbia Typographical Society, having joined it in January, 1515, the night of the adop- zion of its constitution and permanent organi- wation. His loss will be deeply felt in the many rela- tions he sustained to the community, a5 wellas in the circle of his family, now prostrate by this heavy stroke. ee comaraed InceENDIARY FIRE.—Shortly after 12 o'clock Inst night, the two stables belonging to Messrs. Jehn P. Murphy and —— Ridgway, situated mbout the centre of the square bounded by i2th and i3thand C and D streets, (Island.) were discovered on fire, and a general alarm was sounded, bringing out theentire fire depart- ment, including the Government engines. Owing to the scarcity of water—there being but ene plug in that section of the city (corner of 40th and B streets)—only the apparatus of two companies could get to work, the Perseverance tercing water from the plug tothe Franklin, ‘who played on the flames. ‘or & time the ad- jacent property was in great danger, and to ye it much of the fencing abont the fire was nm away. Mr. Murpby had in his stable a quantity of reed, and his loss will be about $600. a@ir. Ridgway’s stable was occupied by Mr. E. bamplin, who had in the stable at the time eeveral borses, and about it several lumber ‘wagons. which wereallsayed. Mr.Champlin, however, lost about $100 worth of feed. There isno doubt but that this was the work of an jucéndiary, as & man was seen to run through abe yard of Mr. More from the direction of the Stables amoment before the fire was discovered. ge Tuer DisTRicT in ConGress.—Yesterday, in the Senate Mr. Willey, of West Va., from the Committee on the District of Columbia, sub- mutted the following report: The Committee on the District of Columbia, who were required by resolution of the Senate, passed February 5, Is64, “to consider the ex- pediency of further providing by law against the exclusion of colored persons from the equal -ujoyment of ail railroad privileges in the District of Columbia,” have had the matter thus referred to them under consideration, and beg leave to report: Tv ct entitled “an act to incoporate the zton and Georgetown Railroad Com- approved May 17, 162, makes no dis- tinction @s to passengers over said road on zccount of the color of the passenger, and that in the opinion of the committee colored persons aire entitled to all the privileges of said road which other persons haye, and to all the reme- dies for any denial or breach of such privi- deges which belong to any person. WRSBE, T,”’ to be performed for posi- | tively the last time, the funny burlesque of DR..LIGHTHILL On the Symptems of Catarrh. .The first censation ie usually a feeling of dryness and heat in the nose, and a frequent | inclination to snéezing. There is an inability to breathe freely, as the nese becomes stopped Up, sometimes on one side, sometimes on the other. Soon a clear watery, acrid discharge makes its appearance, excoriating the nostrils, and edges of the lips, which becomes red and-some- what swollen. Aftera few days the discharge becomes thick, yellowish, extremely frequent, and continues to be a marked featureof he dis- ease, and & source of much danger and the greatest annoyance. After more or less time, it becomes purulent, highly offensive, and as- sumes an extremely fotid odor. It is usually 80 profuse as to require, when confined to the nose, the frequent application of the handker- | chief, or if it drops into the throat, which is Heads and Young Hearts,” when we are sure | more particnlariy the case'whiie the body ts in: a horizontal positicn, constant expectoration, and sometimes both. Sleep is frequently disturbed by a sensation of choking, caused by the presence of the dis- charge in the throat. Owing to the heat in the head, the watery portion of the discharge often evaporates, and assuming a condition of solid- ity, is deposited upon the membrane of the noge and upper part of the throat, in the shape of crusts or hardened lumps. The accumula- tion of these iacrustations producesa feeling of discomfort, and narrows the nasal passages s0 as to embarrass respiration. Therefore, fre- quent efforts have to be made to remove them, either by forcibly blowing the nose, or by per- sistent hawking—a practice as disagreeable to the one affected as it is to thoss around him. After the removal, that side of the incrustation which adhered to the mucous membrane will sometimes be found bloody, a fact which ex- plains the force required for its dislodgment During sleep these incrustations accumulate more rapidly, and the feeling is therefore most uncomfortable in the morning. Sometimes all efforts to clear the throat are futile until after breakfast or after something warm is swal- lowed. Some patients state that they are not successfal until they have swallowed some whisky or brandy. The discharge, whichis at firet withoutsmel assumes in the progress of the complaint an excessively fetid color, the breath participates in this, and becomes occasionally so revolting- ly offensive as to render the patient an object of disgust to himself as well as to others. Ul- ceration of the mucous membrane of the nose takes place frequently, sometimes even attack- ing the bones, when small particles of that substance will occasionally be found mixed with the discharge. ‘rhe accumulation of the discharge, together with the thickened condi- tion of the mucous membrane, renders respira- tion through the nasal passages very difficult, and oftentimes impossible, necessitating res- piration principally through the mouth—a methed very deleterious to the general health, but more particularly so to the lungs, as will be shown hereafter. The unpleasant noise produced durmng sleep, known as snoring, originates from the same cause. The voice loses its musical quality, and assumes a dis- oordant, harsh and nasal character? the sense of sme\} becomes much impaired or entirely lost, and the same effect, though less frequent, is produced on the senseot taste. Occasionally, while blowing the nose, a crackling or bubbling sound will be heard in the ear, and hearing will be found quite thick and stopped up, but returns suddenly with something like a snap- ping sound. This phenomenon is usually repeated until at one time, hearing does not return, and remains permanently injured. Noises in the head of every conceivable description will make their appearance and add to the distress of the stuffe™er, and hearing may be lost so gradually that a considerable degree of déaf- ness may exist before the person is really aware of the fact. The eyes are apt to become weak, irritable, and disposed to water on ex- posure to cold and wind, or after the slightest exertion. A pain, more or less acute, or & dis- tressing feeling of pressure, is experienced over the eyes, and sometimes on the top or back of the head, and also pain in the face, closely resembling neuralgia, for which it is very often mistaken, The distress in the head weakens the memory and produces irritability and moroseness of disposition. The stomach gen- erally euffers more or Jess, is weak and irri- table; the appetite is capricious, and is nearly always bad in the morning. In severe cases the systefm becomes feeble and prostrated, and there is an aversion or inability to either phys ical or mental exertion. Not untrequently eatarrh proyes fatal, either by debilitating the system and wearing out the patient, or by traveling downward and producing throat affections, bronchitis, and finally consumption It may be safely asserted that after hereditary predisposition, catarrh is the most frequent and important cause of this fatal complaint. Dr. LIGHTHILL can be consulted at the Exsitr Hovst, Washington, from Monday morning, February 29. until Saturday evening, March 5, on Catarrh, Deafness, and all diseases of the Ear, Throat, and Air-passages. fel6.eo3w BALLS, PARTIES, &.
