We ate pained tb announce tliat Mr. Hidell, secretary to'Vice Presdent Stephens, yesterday received & telegram from Augusta, aunouncing the sudden and serious illuess of Mr. Stephens at hishome at Urawfordville, Ga, He was at- tacked on Monday morning, and sent on tbat day to Augusta for a physician. This attack, with the known state of his health during the winter, ias created striohs apprehensions in the minds of his friends. He was prevented from coming to Richmond at the beginning of the session of Congress by the serious’ illness of his brother, the Hon. , Linton Stephens, at Milledgeville; thea.by his own feeble health and the great severity of the weather... When again ready to start for Rich- mond, his brother was a second time very severely attacked, which delayed his coming over a week. He was.a third time ready to leave; an@ would, no doubt, have started: to this city yesterday morning but for this un- timely attack. Should he recover, as we trust he will, it is altogether probable he wilk be unable to visit Richmond during this winter. [Norz.—-The above bundle of excuses for the continued absence of Mr. Stephens from Rich mond, seems to be regarded in official circles here as confirmatory of the truth of the state- meut of the servant ot Jeff Davis who recent- ly reached Washington, to the efféct that Ste- phens had guarreled with Davis & Oo., and civen up all connection with the rebel public ticrs, if lie Sad not actually gone abroad, to or his n=socistion with them.—Ep.
