ends THE EVENING STAR. MBS. BEAUCHAMP’S VENGEANCE. poor deat co | Ox artzr VI.—Anorugr Lerrer. Aman more thoroughly worried and beaten never saw than poor Rackit when I called on | him half an ‘hour after. All his Beauchamp seemed vanished, or rather to have become changed intoa savage irrita- tion. He biamed himself; but, as usual, the Teproachés he heaped upon: hisown conduct , were strong in expression but mild ia feeling. Tt was on her head that the bitter vials were emptied. She was demon incarnate. He didn’t know what vices might not be concealed beneath that soft exter- | jor. Why did she wish to marry him? Why persist in wishing it. when it was’ so les aon to the dullest mind that he didn’t wish fra tise had no wealth to tempt her; he had no ae be had no tame—as yet; he “had not anything remarkable in the way of personal attractions; ‘what then conld she see in him? It was clear she had some sinister motive:' Briggs was n better match, yet Briggs had been thrown over- Doard? Why was this ! Some horrible design must be hidden here. I suggested that he should write her a plain letter avowing that he was by nature unfit for the quiet of domestic life, and unequivocally expressing his sense ot the mistake, which he had made in ever imagining that he could settle down. ‘Yon told her she was a beam of sun- shine, and now you ean hint to he- that in an atelier it is negessary to let the blinds down to | .the sunshine out.” “Tl do it,” he said; and he sat down to write. But it is noeasy matter to write onsuch subjects; still less easy is it to tell a woman whom you have sworn that you adore, how impossible it isthatvou can have been in your right senses when you sworeit. Rackitthurst his disengaged hand through his redundant locks, bit effectively the end of his pen, drew figares on his blotting book, but conld not get beyond “My dear Mrs. Beauchamp.” Pres- ently he rose, and lighted a cigaretie, and then walked up and down the room in gloomy med- itation. Occasionally a thoughtseemed to in- spire him, and he sat down; but when he came to express the thought in words, it seemed ut- terly inapplicable, so he threw down his pen and resumed has walk. “Tell a fellow what to say,” heat last eaid | despairinglyto me. And TI began to help him. We hammered ont a leiter together; but it seemed so lame and tame that we both felt it wouldn’tdo. We tried again, but with no great- er success. «T tell you what it is,” he exclaimed at length, «Ishallcatandran. I'll pack upand goto Rome. 1 wantto see Rome; and when she hears that I have quitted England without | mforming her of my intention, i’ will be a del- | ieate Way of Jetting her know that I’ve chang- ed my mind. She will despise me. perhaps and abuse me, for certain : but better that than that she should marry me.” « Better still,” “if you were to write her precisely the same letter which she wrote to Briggs; I ramember the words perfectly.” “By George! what a good idea.” * She cannot take exception to her own sen- timents in herown words, you know. If it was justifiable in her to throw Briggs over as | she did, she can never pretend that you are not equally justified; ard by using her very ex- | pressions you escape all cavil.” “Say nomore. The thing is perfect. Johc- son you're a genius. I never thought so betore; bnt in you common sense amounts to genius.” In a few minutes the letter was written, seal- ed, and despatched by Bob. Rackit was now in'an uproarions state. He punched me in the ribs, and called me his best Friend, He song atthe topof his voice 4 2a morte egnora, and threw such fever inte Addin, Leonora, adiio, that one might have imagined Bim tobe a Mario—in a great coat. In the very height of this excitement, Briggs arrived, face flushed, eyes sparkling, ha air damp with perspiration. “}My dear fellows,” he said, exuitingly, Im 80 glad to find you bothhere. Ouly think! you remember that letter I showed you from Mrs. Beauchamp! Well—it’s all a flam! It’s the First of April! she has been making April fools of us.” “You don’tsay so?” “Pact. k here. When she tthe letter here by a m muger—the cur Tread ta you— | she sent this other to my club: read alond, ++ Dearest John, at the time I wr: this note toyou, I send avother, and a eeierept R yigzon by Ro Ga rat | Te ORE Jook at the date and ail will be arpiaineds tl the date does not enlighten you, come for con- solation to yours ever affectionately— Extty Beatcuanr?” 3 congratulated him, and thought that Rackit also would be overjoyed; but to my surprise I read an expression of deep mortification on his features: and then it occurred-to me that, glad as he certainly was to have escaped his mar- riage, he wis deeply vexed at having been made ridiculous. He called on Mrs. Beauchamp that very after- noon, and received from the bewitching wid- | ow an explanation which was 4 reproof. «My dear Mr. Reekit,” she said, “for some days you made vehement love to me. deny it. the while that 1 was engaged to Mr. Briggs— your friend and my old playmate. 1 tried gni- etly to call you to order but in vain. Now.I was cexstain that you really cared nothing for me.” « Oh, Mrs. Beauchamp!” “You didn’t, so don’t pretend you did. L knew enough of you, to be sure that the attrac- tion lay in thefruit being forbidden. The whim suddenly seized me of puttisg yoursincerity to the test and the license ot AN Fool's Day, sug- gested the means.” «But, suppose you had been mistaken !”" “Then r confess, my prank would have placed me in @ serious position. But I was que safe. I knew with whom 1 was playing. knew that, if volatile and thoughtless, he ‘was, and would always prove himself—a gen- dleman. «& He took her hand, kissed it, and pronounced her an angel. But from that day to this I have mever heard him mention the name of Mrs. | Smythe Briggs. a Heenan and King in Court—How they were Summoned. [From the Manchester Guardian, Dec. 23.] King, Heenan, Tom Sayers, James Mace and four other pugilists, named Travers, McDon- ald, Tyler and Noon, lett London tor Wad- hurst yesterday accompanied by a solicitor, to answer a charge of having committed a breach of the peace in connection with the late prize fight. The Surrey Siandard gives the follow- ing account of the way in which the police suc- ceeded in performing the hazardous duty of serving the summons: ‘The summonses were handed over to Super- intendent Bennett, to find out the men, and serve such personally, if possible. Mr. Ben- mett immediately proceeded to London, and so- licited the assistance ofone of the metropolitan lice. They wentto the bar of the public use kept by Robert Travers {Sa is® man ofcolor,) in Castle street, Leicester square. . Trayers said Mr. Travers was not home. Mr. Bennett’s colleague, however, knew Trav- ers,and after waiting some time, heard his voice. He waesoon fou nd and served with asum- mons. He was very civil, and said, «I think it is very hard that I should be summoned, as I was net engaged im any way at the fight: ently looked on.” They then went to Holywell Yane, to the ola King John pubjic house, kept by James Mace, who it was stated, had gone into the country, and it was uncertain when he would return. After going to a number of other places visited by fighting men, near mid- night Mr. Bennett and his companion pulled up at the Pavillion Theatre, Whitechapel. By persuésion and threats they got to the stage by @ privateentrance. In the boxes they found King. After reading the summons to bim, he was very excited, used bad language, and said they all ought to be ashamed of themselves to summon him. Superintendent Bennett then served the summons on him. ‘Thomas Sayers’ house, which is 10 Belle Vue Cottages, Camden Road, Camden Town, was found tocked up three days running, and Su- perintendant Benvett was told he was gone in- ms = country. Heenan was foundin a respect- pried sideed Bouse at Pimlico, which, through a third person, the American pugilist had ap- p inted as a rendezvous for the service of the summons. He received the Superintendent and hit companions ina gentlemanly manner, ueked them to take seats by the fire, and invi- ‘ed them to take a giass of wine anda segar. | He lett them shortly after to see his med: al attencant, saying, “You may de) peel Wea yer ne ” After-this @ gocd hunt for Jerry Noon, Mace, Sayers and MacDonald.” There being on the same day a nd T will prize fig ht between Baker and Goss, they could | ‘Bot be found. The next day, at the «astend of London, however, they found MacDonald, who’ has the by Ee Ble man. Jace was served by leaving thesum- mons at bis house; Superintendent Benatt then went to Brighton, aud fonnd Siyers had Jeft that town the night before by a London 255 JOHN WAGNER. 55 ving resumed my old line of Look i a’ re ing.
