Voss arrested Mary Bruce, colored, for stea!- ing two fifty dollar notes from Stephen Diy- enport, a soldier. The soldier did not know where he hag been: but described the woma he was with the night before Voss, a searching around, found Mary Bruce, in Gr: bam’s alley, back of the Franklin Engin hovse. He took her and her trunk and co: veyed them to the Second Ward Station: Upon opening the.trunk it was found.to contain 2 large quantity of new dry goods, which she perchased from May & Co, paying for them in two fifty dollar notes. She was committed to jail for court by Justice Clayton. This 1s the girl who was arrested for stealing:the teamsters money last Sunday week, but was dismissed for went of proof. The mcney lost at that time, #114, was subsequentiy found in the stove in 2 charred condition, in the house where Mary Rruce and the teamster stopped, in a house back of the Thirteenth street Baptist Charch. Griff. Mr. Griffin cxme to the window and asked what witness wanted. Witness told him, and Griffin came down. Witness gave him the warrant to read, which he did. Witness then told him that there were othersin the house who he wanted, (referring to a brother of Grif- fin, mentioned in the warr@nt,) and must go in if he had to break the door in. Griffin opened the door and witness went in with him. An old man named Burns and a lady were there. When witness went in some one pushed against the door. After looking through the house wit- ness came. out with Griffin, and when about leaving some one said to Griffin, «« Be cautions; it may be a. plot to put some one in while you are gone.” itness turned to the speaker and told bim if he said. so again witness would ar- rest him. Witness then left with the parties. Detective Clarvoe testified, corroborating the statement of McDevitt at Superintendent ‘Webb's office, and added that Mr. Miller in- sisted upon the officer’s going in a hack with him and Mrs. Black. At the house, when Mr. McDevitt went in with Mr. Griffin, Mrs, Black attempted to go in also, but some one inside slammed the door and caught her dress. Wit- ness pushed against the door to re!ease her. Mr. Miller said that Mrs. Black had power to break the door open. She had authority, Miller said, from Judge Cartter to take two officers and go to the house and break the door. Mr. Miller eaid something about breaking the door, to which Mr. McDevitt replied that if he did he (McDevitt) would arrest him. Mr. W. V. Fendall testified that the evening referrea to he went with Mr. Miller to this house. Witness attempted to go in, and was met by Mr. Griffin, who put his arm up and remarked, ‘You can’t go in; this is my house.” Witnets replied that he wanted to see Mrs. Black; and Griffin said, «She is not here.” Witness did not hear what Judge Cartter told Mr. Miller. At the time witness went to the house there were no officers present, and wit- ness was dressed in black clothes. irs. Anna L. N. Black, for defence, testified that she, with Mr. Miller and two officers went to this house. She didn’t hear any word from Mr. Miller about breaking the door, ex- cept at Superintendent Webb's office. At the houee, Mr. Miller didn’t go to the door at all. Coleman, six women, and nine men, and @ servant girl, and took them before Justice Clayton. Mary &. Coleman was held to bail for court in $500; each of the women was fined $2.50 for prostitution, and the men and the servant girl were dismissed. The house is located next door west of the Franklin En- gine-honse, snd the place was taken possession of by order of Superintendent Webb, acting under the law establishing the Metropolitan Police. The keys remain in possession of the police, and a guard is stationed at the house to protect the furniture, &c.
