FROM THE FRONT, pera Saree CAPT, NEWHALL DROWNED. prea a a We learn that Capt. Newhall, formerly of the 3d Pa, cavalry, but at the time of his death A. A.G. on Gen. Gregg’s staff, was drowned last night, while crossing a small creek this side of the Rappahannock. His body was brought to this city, and will be sent to Phil- | adelphia this evening. Capt. N. had just been to headquarters to have a leave of absence sigred, and was returning to his quarters | when the accident occurred. LATEST FROM THE WEST. The antherities here have dispatches from General Grant, at Chattanooga, dated last night at 9 o'clock, They do not indicate any recent change in the status of affairs there. General Grant is in constant and direct tele- eraphic communication with General Foster, at Knoxville, and had there been fighting of moment between Longstreet’s forces and ours Pursuing him (ag press dispatches yin Vincin- pati seem to indicate) General Grant would doubtless have sent such information here. The fact that he says nothing about auy such engagement or engagements. duces the belief that the statements via Cincinnati, referred to | above, are much exaggerated. It appears that the parties were brothers-in-law, but that Tucker, who had been separated about three years from his wife, had been boarding with Burns. Last night, after the parties had returned from work, (Burns being a laboring man and Tucker a blacksmith,) they eat supper with one ortwoothers who boarded there, and while at the table Tucker urged Barns and the others to go to the Varieties, put Barns refused to g9, when Tucker pulled out & pocket-book, remarking that he had plenty of money, when Burns snatched it outor his band. ‘Tneker drew a dirk knife ahd said that he would go down on Burns, and the latter picked up # fork and strack at Tucker, who at the same time made @ thrust towards Burns, striking him in the right side, near the liver, The parties were apparently in fun, aud after the stabbing, it was thought that Burns was merely teigning to be hurt. As soon as the deed was done, Tucker started for Dr. Joyce, who was s00u inatiendance, but Burns died in a few hours from imiternal hem- morrhage. Sergeant Hurley and Roundsman ements repaired to the house shortly after the occurrence and took Tucker (who expressed hineelf as extremely sorry that he had done the deed) in charge, and he was confined last night in the station-house. This morning Coroner Woodward held an inqueston the ly, when the above facts were elicited, and the jury returned a verdict in ac- cordance with the facts, finding thatthe deed “was done in a playfvl ba. careless manner, but do not believe that it was done intention- ally.” The evidence before the jury Showed that Buras was a poor butindusirions man, and that Tucker was given to at times, and also that the parties have heretofore quarreled, but not recently. Tucker, we be- lieve, lived formerly in the Seyenth Ward, aad duripg the three months’ cam! served with Co. B, Union Regiment, Capt. ly. ‘The de- coe leaves a wife and ‘two ‘small children, in incigent circumstances. » Justice Drury this morning committed Tuck- ig jafl, but it is believed he will he bailed on londay.
