BE aR ae Extensive Stampede. 4 LARGE NUMBER OF HORSES DEOWNED. About ten o'clock last night, about fifty- five hundred horses in the corral at ‘Camp Stoneman (Giesboro Point) broke out of the enclosure an stampeded, going in different directions im droves. A large drove of them came up the road leading to the city, and the guard on the bridge attempted to stop them, when the drove divided, and they went pell- mell into the branch, and many of them were drowned, the number lost beimg estimated at from one to four hundred. The guard at the bridge at once eet to work im getting out those that were allve, and through their efforts a large number were saved. Most of this drove, however, succeeded in swimming the branch and landing at different points on this side, a number swimming tothe Navy-Yard wharves, from whence they were taken. As soon as the stampede took place, a iargs force of cavairy- | een, stablemen, &c., were sent out to gather up the animals, and to-day they are scouring the streets of the city and the various roads in Prince George’s picking them up. There are various conjectures as to tho cause of thestam- pede, some claiming that it was the work of some rebel sympathizer, while others think that the horees got to running to warm them. selves, and knocked dewn the enclosure, P.S.—This stampede has assumed somewhat gigantic proportions. It is now believed that over one thousand horses were drowned in the Potomac and Eastern Braneb; and as these herses Bad all been purchased by the Goyern- ment, ang were valned at $145 per head, the loss to the Government would be $145,000. lapel Poricr Rerorts—First Precinct.—A. The Court held the case under ad- visement for a day or two. This morning was set for the trial of a large number of persons indicted for keeping bawdy houses in the Second Ward. Most of tha, cases were, however, continued for cause. In the case of Louisa Kohner, who keeps a house on Thirteenth street, between D ana E, her counsel pleaded guilty and submitted the case to the Court upon the examination of cer- tain witnesses. Officer Tait made a statement to the effect that defendant had for some time kept a house reputed to be ill-famed. Officer Bigley testified also to the effect that | he knew the house, and it was reputed to be one of iff! fame. The Court sentenced herto pay a fine of $500 and stand commitied to jail until the money is paid, not to exceed one year. —— PREPARING FOR CHBISTMAS.—Last night, officer Burch, of the Fourth Ward, arrested Wm.
