THE EVENING STAR. ——————— COLORS AND FASHIONS. months, by the fair sex. to the tat of the cape, or. frock, or Jorm of & vonnet, fashion may prescril ‘witbont offehding cemmon sense: ence by a mis! met; Sad a Sey brunette may be made to ap- rote brick hue fromthe came mistaken Colors of artificial flowers, bonnets and | b dresses, should always be selected with refer- ence tocomplexion. M. Ohevreul—tne acien- tide Freach chemist, has devoted years of study | to this subject, and has laid down tne jaws | ‘with precision, founded on the dogma, «That j every color, when placed besides another color, | ja changed; appearing different from what it | reaily 18; and moreover, it equally modifies the | eoter with which. it is in proximity.” The 101- lowing hints by Chevrenl, for the toileties of Jadtes, should be read and pondered by all who desire to cgltivate harmony of colors and and adorn their persons in the most scientific i aad pleating msaner :— Rep Dearrry.—Rose-red cannot be put in éon‘act wih the rosiest complexious without esusing them to lose some of their freshness. PDark-red is less. objectionable tor certain com- plexions than rose-red, becanse being higher then thi Jatier, it tends to impart whiteness to sem in consequence of contrast of tone. G@xxEN DRaPERY.-.A delicate green is, on the cotrary, favorable to all fair complexions which are deficient in rose, ana which may Bave more imparted to them without incon- venience. But it is wot as favorable te com- iexions that are more red than rosy, nor to ioe that have @ tint cf orange mixed with Drown, because the red they add to this tint will be o: a brick-red hue. In the latter case, @ dark-green will be lese objectionable than a & licate green. YrLiow Drarery.—Yellow imparts violet tc a fair skin; and, in this view, it is less favo- Table than the delicate green. To those skins which are more yellow than orange, it imparts | white; but this combination is very dull and Beavy fora fair complexion. When the skin je ‘inted more with orange than yeliow, wecan make i' rose ate by neutralising the yellow. It prodaces thieeffect upon the black-haired type, | and it is thus that it eni's brurettes. 1 Violet Dearerirs.—V iolet, the complimen- @ry to yellow, produces contrary effects; thus & imparts greenish-yellow to tair complexions. It augments the yellow tint of yellow and @range rk-ne. The little blue there may bina @omplexion, itmakes green. Violet, then, is one f the least favorable colors tothe skin; atleast when it is not sugiciently deep to whiten it by eontrasi of tone. Bice Dxarery.—Bine imparts orange, which is susceptible of allying itvelf tuvora- Dly to white and the light-flesh tints of fair @omplexions, which has already a more or less determined ‘int of this color. Blue is, shen, snitable to most blondes; and, in this case, jeetifies itt seputation. It will not suit brn- Bettes, since they have already too much of erar ge. Onaxce Drapery —Orange is too brilliant to te elegant; it makes fair complexions blue, whitens thore wich have an orange tint, and gives a green hue to those which have an erange tint, and gives a green hne to thoee of a yellow tint. j BITE DraPery — Drapery of a lusterless- | White, such as cambric and muslin, assorte wel with a tresh compiexicn, of which it re- Meves the rose color: hut it is unsuitable to complexions which Lave « disagreeable tint, because white always exalts all colors by rais- img their tone; consequenily it is unsuitible to | shore exiue which without having this dise- gTerable tint, very nearly approach it. Very Nght white draperies, such as muslin, plaited or nt lace, have an entirely different aspect. | Lack DRaPxry.—Black draperies, lower- | ing the ‘ones of the colors with which they are im juxtaposition, whiten the skin; bat if the | Po@y perts are toa certain point distant from Tapery, it will follow that, although low- ered in tore, they appear relatively to the white parts of the ekin contiguous tothis drapery, Fedder than if the contiguity to the black did | Bot exist.
