In classifying the members we find that there aro: lawyers, ninety two; merchants, twenty three; editors, five; farmers, eight} manufacturers, three; mechasles, 2;" bankers, three; professor, one; Preacher, on0; chemist, one, and miscellaneous, forty seven—making, in all, one hundrodand eighty six mem bers. He was born in Shelby county, Kentucky, January 28, 1823; received a good common schoo! education, studied law, and was admitted to the bar jo Indiana im 1843; to 1846 was ciected, for two years, Prosecuting Attorney in the Seventh Judicial diatrivt of Indiana, and, having re- Moved to Illinois in 1848, was clected a momber in 1650 ‘and 1861 of the State Legislature, and wan chosen a Ro- Presontativd in Congress, from Mlinois, from 1853 to 1855, and re-elected to the Thirty-fourth Congress, Ho was chesen Clerk of the House of Representatives for the ‘Thirty-fifth Congress, and in 1862 be was re-elected to the ‘Thirty-eighth Congress as @ Representative, ALLEN, WILLIAM J. He was born in Tennessee in 1828; removed with bis father to Illinois in 1829; studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1848; in 1854 bo was elected to the illinois Logislature; 1n 1865 was appointed United States Attor. bey for the district of Ilinois, which be resigned in 1860, and was then elected Judge of the Circuit Court. In 1862 he was clected a Representative from Ilinois to the Thirty-eeventh Congress for the unexpired term of John 8. Logan, resigned, and was re-elected to the Thirty eighth’Congress. ALLEY, JOBN B. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, January 7, 1817: received & good common school education; was apprenticed vo a shoemaker, and received bis freedora when nineteen yours of age, after which ho devoted himself to trading; he subsequentiy entered largely into the shoo and leather business, which he his since followod; ho served several years in the City Councils of Lynn; ‘was a member of the Governor's Counc!! ia 1851, & member of the Massachu setts Senate in 1852; of the Stato Constitutional Conven- tion beid in 1853, and in 1858 was elected a Representa- tivo from Massachusetts to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving op the Committee on Post Ottices and Post Roads, Re-elected to the Thirty-seventh and also to the thirty. eighth Congress, ALLISON, WILLIAM B. He was born In Warwick, Lancaster county, Peoney) vania, November 20, 1824, and was elected in 1860 a Representative from Pennsylvania to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving on the committees on the Militia and on Mavofactores. Born in Hardwicke, Otsego county, New York, in No- vember, 1915; while engaged in acquiring an education ho taught school, studied law, and came to the bar in 1836; in 1836 be removed to Chicago, Illinole; in 1897 be was first Clerk of the city of Chicago; in 1843 he was elected to the Illinois Legisiatare, and took an active part in the catial improvements, in 1844 he was Presidential elector; was for a time attorney for the Illinois aod Michigan Canal, and in 1860 be was elected a Representa, tive fr m Illinofs to the Thirty.seventh Congress, serving as chairman of the select Committee on the Defences and Fortifications of the Great Lakes and Rivers. Rio waa born in Brooxline, Norfolk county, Massachu- rotts, January 28,1818, When @ boy he had some ex- perieoce in farming; was in the mereantiic business, as apprentice, clerk and proprietor, for twenty years; studied jaw, and came to the bar in 1836; served seven years in the Massachusetts Legislature, betwoon the years 1842 and 1850; wag a member of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1853, and also of the Perce Oongress of 1861; wat a Bank Commissioner in 1949 and 1550, was Governor of Manvachusett# in 1861 and 1852, Secretary of the Moesachuretta Board of Elucation for joven years, mimver for six years of tho Board of Overseers of Harvard College, and Commissioner of In- ternal Revenue from July, 1862, to March, 1863. In 1862 he was elected a Representative from Massachusetts to the Thirty-eight Congress. BOYD, 8. 1. Ho was born in Williamson coanty, Tennessee, May 28, 1828; received a good English education; adopted the pro foxsion of law; in 1861 raised a regiment for the war and became its commander, the same having acquired repu- tation ng ‘the Lyon legion,” and in 1862 he was elected & Representative from Miseour! to the Thirty-eigbth Con. gress. Born in Rockingham county, Virginia, November 4, 1818; removea with his father to Indiana in 1820; speat his boyhood in Washington county, where be received @ common schoo) education, and has devoted mucl of bis Uife to agriculturat pursuits, apd especially to the raising of the best breeds of cattle, He served as @ major in the Mexican war under General Taylor, and was present at the battio of Buena Vista. In 1848 and 1649 he was lected to the Legislature of Indiana, in 1850 elected to the State Senate, serving three years; in 1854 he was com missioned & brigadier general of militia, frequeutly pre: sided over the Board of School Trustees for his township, was Vice President and President of the Washington and Orange countios agricultural societies; in 1859 he was Appointed by the Legislature of Indiaua to the important position of agent for the State, which he resigned, and in 1860 he was elected a Represontative from Indiana to the Thirty seveuth Congress, serving on the Com on Territories. Ho was re-elected to the Thirty eighth Congress. CRESSWELL, JOUN A. J. Was born in Port Deposit, Cecil county, Maryland, No vember 18, 1628, graduated at Dickinson College, Penn- sylvania, in 1543, studied law and came to tho bar of Maryland in 1850. He wee a momber of the Mary Jand House of Delegates in 1861 and 1862. From August, 1862, to April, 1863, ho was an aesistant adjutant general for Maryland, and was olected a Representative from Maryland to the Thirty-eighth Congress, DAVIS, If. WINTER. Ho was born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1817; grado ated at Hampdea and Sidney College; was elected a repre wentative (rom Maryland to the Thirty-fourth and Thirty. filth Congireses, serving as a member of the Committes of Ways and Means. He was also elected to the Thirty. sixth Congress, serving on the same committee, and io 1663 he was re-elested 10 the Thirty eighth Congress.
