The wounced soldiers were exchanged for loyal soldiers wounded in previons engage- ments, and the rebel dead sent through our lines Colonel Russ, commanding the assaulting party, Colonel McElroy and Lieutenant Col Thomas, ui the enemy, were killed. From present appearances the Hon. Schuyler Colfax, of Indiana, ts destiued to be the Speaker of the new House. His only opponent for the nomination by the supporters of the Govern- ment in the due prosecution of the war, is Mr. Elihu Washbarne, of Illinois, who, though deservedly & very popular member, does not seem likely to divide the vote in the caucus to- morrow evering seriously with Mir. C. The latter owes his better chance of election to his admitted rare qualifications and tr _t a8 & pre- siding officer. An effort will doubtless be made by the op- position to run in some outside gentleman, standing with Mr. Colfax upon the war ques- tions in issue; but with Messrs. Webster, Cress- well, Davis, and Thomas, of Maryland, cer- tain to sustain Mr. Colfax, as we believe them to be, we do nct perceive any chance for his defeat. The candidates for the Clerkship already known. are Measrs. McPherson, of Pa; Sara’l Fessenden, of Me.: Green Adams, of Ky ; Kel- sey, of N. Y.: Buffington, of Mass.; and Mr. Etheridge, of Tenn., the Gilerk of the last House, It is impossible tor any one to esti- mate correctly in advance what is to be the re- sult of the contest for the Clerkship and other elective offic®g of the body; little reliance is to be placed on the promises of politicians in Congress as on those of politicians out of it, in such scrub races as these elections almost in- variably prove.
