The Rebel Battery en Leokout Mountain at Work—Reinforcements for Bragg*s Army—A Bleedy and Decisive Struggle Leoked For. CHaTTanooea, Nov. 16.—All is quieton our front. The rebel battery on Lookout Mountain has been quite vigorously worked to-day, firing alternately on Hooker's camp, Moccasin Point and the Chattanooga camps. Rebel shells are also occasionally thrown into the town. The rebel fire, althovgh a plunging one, is neither accurate nor effective. No casualties are ro- ported here. Our Moccasin Point batterigs have a splen- did range ot the rebel camps in the Chattanoo- go Valley, on the east side of Lookout Moun- iain. ‘The movements of the rebels at one time fa- yored the belief that they would advance in large force on Hooker's position and endeavor to drive him out ofit, but the strength of that osition and the advantageous way in which Tooker hfs disposed of his forces, and the co- operation which he can receive from other forces, has undoubtedly led the rebels to aban- don the scheme. The latest information received from our scouts is contradictory of former reports. It is now said that the Western and Atlantic railroad is being worked to its tull capacity, bringing reinforcements to Bragg, and that the road from Chickamauga Station for eight miles south is lined with rebel camps. HEADQUARTERS ARMY OF THE PoTOMac.— Noy. 15.—[Correspondence Phila. Inquirer.}— This morning the quiet at the front, which since Sunday last had only been interrupted by occasional picket firing, was broken by quite ohne anne one advance of our cavalry to the various fords of the Rapidan to reconnoiter the position of the enemy. Yesterday a deserter came into our lines at Somerville Ford, and being brought up to Gen. Custer’s Deadquarisrs, sisted that the Rebel army was falling back from the river, in the direction of Spottsylvania Court House. It was noticed later in the day that thay had sub- stituted cavalry for their infantry pickets on | our front, and this circumstance appearing to corroborate the statement of the deserter, it was thought they might be about to attempt another ank Movement. To ascertain the facts in the case Kilpatrick's division and one brigade of Buford’s were or- dered to start outon a reconnoissance at two o’clock this morning, with instructions to feel the strength of the enemy at the several fords, and if they shovld find the works on the other side unoccupied, to cross over. They reached the river before daylight, Davies’ brigade of Kilpatrick's division taking Somerville and | Germania tords: Custer’s brigade the fords next above, Morton’s and Kaccoon: while the brigade of Buford took the fords above the rail- road crossing. The rebels, on perceiving their approach, opened fire on them from their pat- teries, and it was soon discovered that there was no truth in the report of their falling back, their artillery being found in position and their rifle-pits lined with infantry. At the latter the First Vermont and Sixth Michi- gan cavalry were fired upon as they ap- Prosched, and compelled to beat a hasty re- treat. Seeing this the rebel infantry came out of their rifle-pits and ran down to the river, and although the siresm was hich, some forty or fifty of them had the temerity to wade across. Dripping with water and plaster with mud they commenced following our men, when the | latter chastised their impudence by turning and giving them a volley, which sent them scampering back in double quick time. Mean- time we had got our guns irto position, and commenced shelling the rebel infantry in their Tifle-pits, which they soon left and wtired bes hind a hill out of range. Artillery firing, more or less brisk, was kept Up &t various points for several hours, but it teing tally ascertained that the enemy were still occupying their works in force, eur men withdrew, leaving a picket line along the riv- €r, Asit had bern before, and having accom- plished their object at a cost of one man slight- jy wounded and one missing. A Cincinnati news- paper comes to the rescue in the following sug- gestions, which we reproduce, warning our readers, however, that there is a point where coal cinders cease to have any virtue: The ashes or cinders are not to be thrown away, but dampened to a kina of mortar, aud again placed on the fire. They burn readily, and by so doing there is the economy of hay- ing @ hot fire with one-tenth of the fuel, be- sides not being troubled to convey the ashes to areceptacle. We do not know of a stove that cannot make ashes enough to supply itself, only a few nuggets of coal being used. First, make a fire in the usual way, and when it begins to burn freely place a lump of coal (the best) near the stove door or front of the grate—then beap on the wet ashes or cinders, and pack them down, the vent be. low being unobstructed. The process issimple, and a few trials will satisfy the unbelievers. Dust coal may be used in the same way, and ‘we are assured that many cellars have mines of wealth in the refuse of former years. While coal is so scarce and so costly, should not economy prompt 4 trial of the plan pointed out, which is attended with so little trouble and a& sparing of labor?
