The Lee was a goverLinent steamer, and cont:ined a cargo of very valuable rovernment stores. What General «\Baldey*? Smith Has Done, Cuattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 12, 1863—The following editorial is copied from the Savannah Republican of the Sth, with reference to the masteriy move of Brigadier General W. EB. Smith, Chief of Engineers of the Department of the Cumberland, on Lockout Mountain Valley, Raccoon Mouniain, &e.: « The enemy has evidently gained & pocition tha: will render tha receipt ef remforcements aid supplits at Chattanooga, both safe and certain. There is no longer any difficulty in his remsinirg where he is, and the advantages ot our position have been completely Jost co as. The Yankees have out-generaled us; that is the p'aim English of the matter, and we are left to chew the cud of disappointment, and deliberate over the next best step to be taken. As to where the responsibility for this disnster lies it ig dim- cult, with present information, to speak advi- eecly. We only know that General Longstreet Was in commind of the Irft wing of our army, which ought ‘o have prevented it. Whether it covld have tern done with proper vigilance eid energy remains to be seen. The onus rests upen tha: cfficer, and having always conducted h inselt heretofore well, we take it for granted that he can show a ‘clar bill’ in the case retcre us. « But what is to be done in the present Pposi- tion of afisirs with ourarmy? What is the ‘bert nextstep,’ is now the subject of anxious end urgent inguiry with all, both Government and people? Itisclearthat the enemy ont- mbers us, end hold positions that cannot be aken trom him without a loss far more than To this dilemma have we been brought by the first false step—the failure to press the enemy after our victory at Chicka- maura and to enter Chattanooga in pursuit of bis vanguithed and panic-stricken legions. Ent we most now deal with the future.” Rebel Editorial View of the (‘Situation."* The following in the same paper is trom “P, W. A.,” editor and correspondent of the Sa- ass neb Republican, dated Lookout Mountain, Novy. 3d: After speaking of the occupation of Lookout Yalley and adiacent country hy anr fanse- =~ “ine Wa0vemerin upuu we miltary chess- toard, by which the enemy got possession of Lookout Valley and the railway w Bridgeport was a masterly stroke. The conception was a brilliant one, and the execution of it admirable and faultless. All the combinations, from the building of the pontoon boats and floating them down the river to the unexpected arrival | of the forces from Bridgeport, was perfec’. In- deed, the river and the railroad from Lookout Mcuntain to Brifeeport and the Valley and Raccoon Meuntain slipped out of our hands so easily, or rather were taken from us so adroitly that we hardly knew wherfit was done. The optration, however, has changed the «hole aspect of affairs here. ‘he question of 6 ibeisi- ing the Federal army in Chatianoo:a this winter is solved, and there is no lonser any doubt about the ability of its commander to obtain all neediul supplies unless beihines opreoecl him of the railroad. To do this we s Bav- to fight another battle and overcome parent difficulties of a serious character. The truth is, Lookout Mountain is very mach in our way. If we make Lookout Valley the battle grouna ‘we interpose the mountain between us aud our base of supplies, and expose our flank and rear to movement either from Chattanooga or Bridgeport, and if we do not go into the Valley we cannot dislodge the enemy. Why, then, should we remain longer in the mud and water in Chattanooga Valley. Miscellaneous Items. ‘The came paper announces the resignation of Major General Frank Cheatam. It says :*‘At his Own request he has been relieved ot his command in the Army. of Tennessee, under Gen. Bragg.” They regret exce Ty that he should have felt it his duty to take sach a step, as the country can “ill dispense wita his rescence and services at this critical juncture.” Row we may look out for desertions. Frank “Cheatam was the idol of his command, ani none other, no matter how competent he may be, will keep the Tennessee boys together as he did. Col. Jeff. Forrest, brother of Gen. Forrest, was killed 8 few Gays ago 1m an engagement with our forces near Tuscumbia. CHARLESTON. Details of Operat Against Sumter. From the correspondence of the Baltimore American, dated November 8, we select the following: To-day will complete the second week of the second bombardment of Sumter, and it still goeson. Notso actively asat first, but still continnously. It would be a piece of curious information to know the weight and number of balls, the amount of powder expended, and the total cost of these bombardments of Sam- ter. Certainly the figures would be large. No, such expenditure of metal has been upon any other fort in the wars of the world. f the huge mase of ruins which now mark the spot where Sumter once was, no inconsid- erable part must be iron; and large as was the cost to the government for the erection of the ‘work it was insignificant tothe expenditure that bas been made for its destruction. Sumter is no longer a fort, but ithas become, as the French would say, an idea. Itis y si - cal of the rebellion—ruined, yet defiant. The enemy hold on to it as a point of pride, as the birthplace of the rebellion, and so long as they can plant a flag there believe their cause is not hopeless. FIRING ON CHARLESTON. Gen. Gilmore, a few days since, turned one of his guns on Charleston and fired three or- dinary shell (no Greek fire) into the city, mere< ly to try the range. The shells were landed away in the center of the city, showing that it is entirely under the range of our guns, and that we can destroy it at any time we wish. I presume, however, that the city will not be sbelled until our iron-claa fleet are placed in a Position in Rebellion roads, where its surren- der can be demanded according to all the forms and usages of war. If the rebels then contiane stubborn, Charleston will soon cease to exist, Linen CHEAPER THAN COTTON.—The Bel- fast ({reland) Northern Whig shows that there are now linens ef a coarse kind not only rela- tively but absolutely. cheaper than» cotton.
