The numbers, however, appeared so incredibly enormous that we have felt dis- pesed to make some inquiries in regard to the matter, and find that though the army of pros- titutes here is fearfully large, it does not ap- proach the loose estimates alluded to above. The number of white prostitutes housed in the various wards, may be set down at the following figures:—First Ward, 530; Second Ward, 518; Third Ward, 105; Fourth Ward, 200; Fifth Ward, 310; Sixth Ward, 200; Seventh Ward, 450. Total, 2,313. The number of these resident in Washington before the war was about 350. The colored prostitutes now in Washington and housed, are cet down at 1,542, and of this number feven-eighths have been colonized since the At least a third ot the whole number, white and black, are street walkers of a character of unblushing indecency never before known in Washington, and are colonists trom New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Balti- more, and some few from the western cities. The whole number of public prostitutes of every grade and color in Washington will rot exceed 5,000, of whom not more than a tenth resided in the District of Columbia previous to the war. There area number of females sailing under falge colors afloat here, and who, until they are found out, frequently manage to quar- ter themselves at respectable boarding houses and hotels. It would be difficult to estimate the number of these, but it is not large enough tomaterially swell theaboveestimate. Adding to this estimate the number of prostitutes in Georgetown and Alexandria, the total will not, we incline to think, reach the half of fifteen thous=nd. The showing at best is not an agreeable one, but it is some satisfaction to know that it is not quite half so bad as represented. ——— AFFAIRS AT THE Navy Yarp.—Every de- partment of work at the Navy Yardis kept in full blast. Along the wharves are quite a number of vezsels, some of which have lately been repaired and pinced in trim for service. The Tulip has lately had some important ad- ditiovs made to her machinery. The Bibb has lately been overhauled, and the inters have her now in hand. The Western World, ot the Worth Atlantic Squadron, has had an exten. | sive overhauling, and is being ade ready for j sea. The mortar schooner Beacon has been placed in fine trim for service. The iron-clad Sangamon is still at the wharf, and it was de. termined to place her on thé ways to clean her bottom, but it has been found that she draws too much water to allow that to bedone, and a purchase is now being rigged by which to do “On Monday last, most of the cot yn Monday le colored hands employed in the anchor sop struck for higher wages, demanding $1.75 instead of $1.50, which they have been receiving heretofore. Their demands were not acceded to,and twenty-nine of them were discharged, and this morning twenty-five white men were set to work at the old price, $1.50 per day, Some of the seamen attached to vessels at the yard, yesterday, it appears got unruly, several of them having been arrested on the street for drunkenness and disvruerly conduct, and last evening & muee occurred inthe mould loft, and for a time considerable disorder pre- vailed, but the officers succeeded in restoring quietness. Two of the sailors, one of them named Heffron, loafed about the yard all night, and this morniag Mr. Howard, a watch- man, discovered them parily dressed in citi- zen’s clothes, and pursued them, when they ran past the watchman and out of the eastern gate. A guard was sent after them, and after some resistance they were secured. While on the way to the cell, in charge of the guard, Hefiron dealt one of the guard a powerfal blow and Saha he to escape, when & bayonet was thrust at him, taking effect in his arm, which quieted him down, and after his wounds were dressed he was properly secured. pee beens Poticw Rgrorts.—First Precinct.—William Babcock, ems McKey, and John Brown aving Government property in their SES- sions) celtvered to the military at Glesbore’ poin!
