It appears that 3 quantity of 12-pounder fixed Ammunition, some of which had recently been used for target practice, was placed in the gma) building formerly used as the bake house And dispensary of tue penitentiary, (those boxes which were not filled having been taken to the jabaratory,) andjthat yesterday the two Men stove-named were set to work storing the ammuniticn, when that in one of the boxes, from some cause not ascertained, exploded, setting off the ammunition in other boxes, ex- ploding twenty-three rounds of the thirty-two in four boxes. and setting the tow in which it is packed on fire. ‘be amount of powder exploded was over fifty-seven peands. The explosion forced to the doors of the house, and these being provided with spring locks, the sufferers were locked in fora ume, but quickly one of the employees unlocked the door, and they were got out and taken to the hospital, where the surgeon of the post is attending them, and he pronounces their injuries not to be serious. An alarm of fire was raised, and the various companies of the city, including the Government steam fire depart- ment, were soon on their way to the scene, but before their arrival the engines of tue Arsenal, worked mostly by men trom company F, 27th Pennsylvania yolunteers, had extinguished the fire, which did no serious damage to tae building, and had removed the ammunition to a place of safety. ‘The cause of the accident has not yet been Asvertained, but an investigation will at onca be made by the vigilant commandant of the post. It was at first thought thata box of loose ammunition had by some means got into the building, and that the explosion was caused by the friction fuses of the shot, but it was found this morning that the boxes had been filled. It may be proper to state that the two injured men were among the mcat careful employedat the Arsenal, and on account of their care:al- ness fave been heretofore the only persons allowed to stere the powder in this building. —— Pingy Brance Races.—The trotting match ‘Wednesday at the Piney Branch Course was one of the most interesung that has lately taken place in this neighborhood, and was largely Attepded, excellent order prevailing. ‘he purse was fer a purse of $500; best three in five to harness.
