Agsin turning in the direction of Kurtenett, Mr. Carrington said: Perhaps ie las a military uniform—perhaps he be the honored name of an American officer. Gentiemen, is this funcy or is it tact? Mr. Carrington continued at some length in the same connection, and proceeded to the ar- gument npon the main points in the case, whether the establishment (275 D street) is a con mon bawdy house; and second, if the de- tendants are the keepers of it. Do you not see all the paraphernalia of a fashionable bawdy house! Wine circulating to keep the blood hot; lewd and lasciyious women with low-necked Greases on. Mr. Carrington proceeded to deal with the objections made to the characier of the wit- nesses for the prosecution by the counsel for the defense, and said he did not ask for the conviction of the detendants npon the isolated and uncoroborated testimony of prostitutes. ‘There were Stephen and Wm. I have regretted to notice during the progress of this trial that pretty fault reports haye been given of the proceedings in the public papers, but T hope it bas not been done with the coneur rence of any officer of this cour’. I éonot know strictiy that the court ought to interfere to prevent the publishing of evidence and proceeding which I suppose are necessarily offensive ard disgusting to the better partofthis community. Bot I am sure euch publications answerno good purpose, and itmay be regarded as a question of taste be- tween the Editors of these public papers and their readers, but still 1 regret to say it is done. I think the tendency is only pernicious, demor- aliving, offensive and disgusting, and I hope in future it may be avoided in trials of this de- seription. ow, gentiemen, yor may take the case und dispose of it. . The case was then given to the jury, and in about ten minutes they returned witn @ verdict of guilty of keeping a bawdy-house, and recom- mended Maude Roberts to the clemency of the Court. Mr. Ford made a motion for a new trial in. the case ot Burtenett, and the argument of the motion was postponed until this morning. The sentence of Maude was deferred alsa until that time. ee DReCENT UPON A GAMBLING RancuEe.—Wm Whitey, private Ist Connecticut artillery, sta- tioned at Fort Reynolds, came to this city yes- terday with $137 in his pocket, and was en- ticed imto the gambling roems of Crome & Shermund, in the Murray House, Pennsyiva- nia avenue.
