AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Forp’s TuxzaTER.— Maggie Mite! hell willap- pear to-night for the only time as «Narra. mattah,” in the beantiful dramatic romance, «:Wep! of the Wish-ton-Wish.” Mr. J.T. Fanain will appear as “ Major Ginger,” and Mr. C. B. Bishop as “Skunk.” The evening's catertainment will conclude with “ Margot, the Poultry Deater,” and there is thus offered oer et the most attractive double bills of the sei CaNTErcrry. —Manager Sinn not only pro- duces nightly at his popular resort, the best class of concert nall entertainments, but the drama is not forgotten. To-night, therefore, not only will Julia Deas: Millie and Clara Fowler, H. W. , J. S. Edwards, and the rest of ‘the. comp ay. appear in song, dance, rama of and Ethiopian eccentricity, but the di «Dick Turpin” will also be performed. Farr.—The Fair at Odd Fellows’ Hall, by the ladies of St. Patrick's parish church, is being continued this week yet. The Fair is one of the most delightful that has been held in this hall for a long while. +22 THE TROTTING YESTERDAY. —Setee Sig nat The National Course in Full Feather. es Butler Wins. ae aleege—te; Eyerybody—that is to say everybody who could muster horse, vehicle, or walking shoes —was headed about 1 o'clock yesterday p. m., in the direction of the Navy Yard Bridge and the National Course; and at two o'clock, the hour for the trot, there were probably four or five thousand people on the ground. The ten (Or More) acres of carriages clustered within the course were decidedly brilliant with colors, the prevailing fall fashion of red with the ladies serving to make a suiflicient relief to the more sombre costume of such of their attendant cavaliers as were not of the military persuasion, Bright button-dom and shoulder strap-dom was, however, sufficiently represented to make another smart ingredient in the display; and the rank and file of the army, alse, (from theneigh- | boring military posts) lined the plankenclosure | for a considerable distance. The grand stand and the ladies’ stand were-all alive with spec- tators, also as was every point of vantage ground commanding the course. The assemblage was notable in the main for its respectability, a feature quickly remarked | by those who have witnessed similar affairs in the vicinity of great commercial cities, where the sharper and rowdy element is generally largely in the ascendant. We noticed here yesterday the Secretary of the Interior, Judge Hughes, Judge Peck, Mr. Chittenden, Register of the Treasury, hand- some Mr. Hay, the President’s private secre- tary, Mr. Keshon, proprietor of the “ Fashion Course,” Marshal Lamon and his genial brother, Hon. Robert Lamon, Mayor Wallach, and most of our city’s notabilities; General Slough, Military Governor of Alexandria: Captain Potts, of the Metropolitan; Dr. Mehat- fey; Captain Hartz, Quartermaster’s Depart- | ment; Captain West, of the Capitol Extension; Marshal Brown, Mr. Boteler, Mr. Van Ris- wick, and numbers of others, who like a good ho:se, and know one when they see it. Mr. Moffatt, the proprietor of the course, pre- Sided at the seat of customs, supported by Col. Dennis, that prince of good fellows, as his ‘¢right bower.” We were glad to see from the indications yesterday that Mr. Moffatt is in a way to get some returns tor his big outlay; one, we may add, that none but “ man of nerve and great enterprise would dare risk in such a venturous undertaking. The course (one mile in length) was in fine condition yesterday. It is nearly level, witha scarcely perceptible rise in the turn of the home- stretch; and when the ground is compacted, as it will be by another season, will, in the opin- ion of good judges, be equal, if not superior, to any of the celebrated northern courses. Nu- merous stands, horse-stalls and buildings, in addition to those already erected, are now being built, and a large outlay is being expended in this direction. The site, on a fine open plateau, approached by 3 route through some of the most picturesque scenery in the vicinity of the National Me- tropolis, cannot be surpassed, and especially in view of its convenience of access from the city. faith in the bay at this junctufe, and conse- quently no little betting. The horses started off superbly, neck and neck, and until the half stretch was reached they 1roze to each other as affectionately as ig in double team, instead of, as in fact, straining every muscle for advantage in separate wagons. Here occurred a beautiful struggle.. It was a work of time tor the enclosure to diegorge its acres of carriages and equestrians, and it was noeasy job for the road to the city to accommodate the sudden rush of travel. Itwasa sight to see that sweep of road down by Foxtown, and so on across the bridge and up through the Sixth Ward occupied in dense procession, and thousands waiting with more or less patience in carriages and on horse- back for their turn to move. We saw one young lady in an open barouche, wearing a suger-loaf (truncated) beaver ot the fall style standing on the seat and making an eager sur- vey of the crowd in quest of a delinquent cus- tomer on her betting books. He had skedaddled ~“aperiently.” On the way home, vehicles were required, by sentries posted, to keep strictly to the right, a necesary precaution in view of the droves of led horses (Government) encountered, and Government wagons, &c.; and at the best there were not a few entanglements, and some dam- hore stretch, when Butler made another push | dangerous opponent, who crept up, inch py | | ber of which license must be painted in bisck The black was now driven up to the post of | ‘Teo the Pablhic. ~ Deraneemaes eg Ey Mztrorotitay SES si +t lam so frequently ea called upon b: who require information as d'upon by Derk laws in Ay communi soculetiax, Hacks, snd fapoeereruent com: its made to me cle a impositions practiced by hackmen, that I thought it best to prepare an abstract of the FE wil be fo this subject as it at present stands. We hear that a match will take place this aiternoon at the National Course, between Mr- Williams’ horse “Tom McClellen,” and John Henesley’s mare «Mary Washington,” tor a purse of $200. Next week comes the great running races, when five purses will be run for, by some of the first horses in America, among them Idle- wild, Panic, Thunder, Blackbird, Jonn Mor- gan, &c., &e. On Saturday, November 7, the wind-up will be in a grand race at four-mile heats, in which Thunder, Blackbird and either Panic or Idle- wild will appear. The three-year-old stakes will not be run for, as so many of the good colts and fillies entered in these stakes haye met with mishaps which caused them to let up in their work or put out of training. gS Orruans’ Court, J udye Purcell.—Yesterday, the will of Michael H. Cofirad, deceased, of Georgetown, which bequeaths hts estate to hia relatives, and nominates Alex Beall as execu- tor, was filed for probate. The will of the late Aloysia Graham was admitted to probate. M. Julia Barrett and E. B. Barrett obtained letters of administration on the estate of the late James A. Hastings. Se Forp's New THEATER.—This evening, the beautiful adaptation from Cooper’s celebrated composition entitled «The Wept of the Wish- fon. Wis ish,” 18 to be presented at this first-class theater. In addition to the dramatic romance, the sparkling comedy entitled “ Margot, the Poultry Dealer,’ is to be given. These two excellent pieces, each with an admirable cast of characters, cannot fail to attract a large share of public attention. It should be taken into consideration that but three more nights of THE TROTTING. At2 p.m. astroke upon the bell gave notice for the production of the horses;and the three contestants for the $1,0°0 purse (that swung invitingly in its wire cage over the track in front of the judges’ stand) made their appear- ance. The three horses are all from the North, and are of celebrity there, viz: Butler,” a black gelding; “Prince,” a bay gelding; « Hartford Belle,” a bay mare. The borse “Butler” we should say, is better known elsewhere as “General Butler,” but, as ‘was shown the other day on the course in the case of another horse named for a General of note, there is some incenvyenience attending such military titles for horses om a race course where soldiers form a considerable element in the audience, as they seem inclined to insist thata horse so named shal! win “anyhow.” Accordingly sli military titles (for horses) are tabooed on the course and the General Butler ran as plain “Butler” yesterday. Butler was, however, the favorite in the betting from the start, and the result showed that his honors did not depend upon his title. The second stroke of the bell admonished curious spectators to clear the track, and the horses got off handsomely, Butler taking the lead, which he maintained past the quarter pole, when. Prince and Belle surged, ahead, the tormer im advance. Butler maintained his equanimity, and soon resumed his old place in the lead, making con- siderable daylight between himself and his op- ponents. Atthe “half mile,” Belle picked up, and kept close to Butler until entering the home stretch, when Butler ungallantly shook Mer off, winning the heat by two lengths. ‘Time, 234%. Butler broke twice in this heat. Prince acted badly from the start, and came in three lengths behind the Belle. The betters on the black looked happy, and offered heavy odds en their favorite, but, however, had some cause for anxiety in the appearance of their horse, who blowed scme and looked rather distressed. To those who study excellence with economy in fashionable articles of dress, an opportunity is ment of the second heat, but when they got fairly off, Prince struck out amazingly, to the elation of his‘friends and perturbation of the Butler men. Prince kept the lead until nearly to the home stretch, when Butler shot past him and come in three lengths ahead. Belle four lengths in the rear of Prince. Time 2.22. The figures as announced on the judges’ blackboard drew a big cheer from the Butler backers, and they offered bigger odds on the black with not much alacrity in acceptance on the part of the opposite partizans. It was now announced from the judges’ stand that the Belle of Hartford had been withdrawn. The interest now centered in a small focus as (the race being for three heats out of five,) if Butler won the coming heat the contest ‘was up. At the tap of the drum, they went off for the third heat, Priace taking the lead until past the quarter pole, when Butler worked past him, but broke, and Prince went ahead again, passed the half mile post in 1.16 and come in two lengths ahead, Butler breaking again in the home stretch. Time, 2.31%. The success of Prince in this heat caused immense slaughter amongst the “ party of the other part:” in which. however, the latter got even with theit adversaries on the next heat, The excitement was now pretty high, in view of the fourth heat; and as the horses appeared it was noticed that the driver of Butler had doffed his coat, appearing in his shirt sleeves, a fact accepted by the Butler folks as meaning ‘work, and received as such with shouts of sat- isfaction. The driver of Prince, his adherents said, had signified that if the hegt could be won dy his borse it should be done; and there was n0 Bittle now offered for selecting from the most attractive Stock of ready made clo’ in this city, at very reduced prices, oc9-4m —— New Yorum Styies.
