"LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Forp’s Dunaren.< the Pearl of Savo: ben Mother's Prayer, Will be perform ight again at Ford's. This piece was Ae amen for the first time in this city last night, and itis scarcely necessary toeay that it elicited the m unbounded applanse, and the charm- ivg Magale Mitehbell wou new laurels. The mmrlv-drama is one well worth seeing, a3 it is in rinsically meritorious, and is performed at Ford's in a charming manner CANTERBURY.—A good bill of song, dance er this ev Ding’s entertainm-ntat Manager Sinn's Fares hall. Harmon was arrested by offer Robert Johnson, of the Third Ware, for passing a fifty-dollar note, altered trem a two do:ler is ue. The cass was tuken betore Justice Rowe laid, Where the complainant, Mr. = ch.eicer, bla. Ksmith, ieslified that he received the pote from Mr. trarmon, in part payment for property. Mr. Harmon is engag-d ia the sut- Jer's busiess, and stated in bis defense that he Was ignorant of the fraud, and that he got the now from some person counested with the army ot the Potumac. the case, upon Mr. Harmon Making good the smeunt ot Stry dovlare. The altered note was surhed over te the property clerk of the police ‘by Sergeant Skippon The note is similar to one described im the Star some weeks ago. Itis very neatly aliered trom a genuine two. The figire wy” is very nicely covered by 50” e@ugraved upon very thin paper and astead the upper corners, The! sti? in the lowe corner are filled in between them with a kind olereen ink. The word “two,” in the promise to pay, is also covered with «& fifty,” pasted on. The “two” between the circles in ‘the parallel ui es in the lower right corner, over the Treas- signature, are concealed by dashes of ink. Altogether, the aiteration is well culcuinted to deceive those unaccustomed to the appearance of the genuine note. The mark ry. Which they can be detected was befere ex- ained in the Star; but for me benellt of the publi> we repeat it. At the left end of the par- allel linesis a circle of delicate lines, represent. ing rr + in which are printed the figures 1, 23. The Te indicating the denomination of the nore is in a small white circle, from which the rays converze, and this mark 1s not, as yet, altered in any notes discovered, -—»— ® Rerorts.—irst Precine fight ; #2. James then seized a wood-saw, ap- arently to split her head, but again failed. ary torgivingly tried to excuse tha conduct of her husband, and said he was only in sport. The Justice decided that, as the sport was dangerous, it must be stopped, and as Mary would not complain of her husband, the Jus- tice, acting under the municipal law, fined James $4.4 and Mary $1.94, for disorderly conduct. ——e = Forp’s New THeaTEeR.—The production of the Pearl of Savoy at this chief resort of the intelligent and fashionable, was a marked and rosgnificent success. The acting of Miss Mitchell, Mr. Raymond, Mr. Fannin, and the €ntire corps of artists engaged by Mr Ford was superb. The house, as was anticipated, was filled to repletion, and rarely has it been our fortune to see a larger collection of wit and beauty. The Pearl of Savoy has become atonce a favorite play, and will have tn ail probability, the most successful run of any piece ever procaced in this city. The new scenery by Mr. Getz, and the splendid music by Prot. Withers, wete indeed efforts worthy cf tLese great artists. Seats for any day of Maggie Mitchell's re-engagement may be secured by application at the box office of the theater, without extra charge. ae a AxniveD.—The gunboat Jacob Bell arrived last might from the lower Potomac, but reports nothing new. Yesterday morning, a fire broke out in the back building of Mrs. Van Horn’s resi- dence, on L street south, between Fourth and Fitth streets east, which damaged the building to a considerable extent, and but for the vigi- lance and energy of officer Barkiey, Mrs. Ven- able aud other neighbors the loss would have been serious. The conduct of Mrs. Venavle ‘was praised 1p the highest terms, and the neigh- bors say if a fire company is organized in that sect of the city they will tender her the pres- idency.
