Beebe btleite-t The Situat: Before Chattan The correspondent of the Mobile Tribune writes: «Our ermy is in splendid condition andin fine spirits, being most anxious for another turn at the rascally Rosecrans. From the great number of additional tents on the ridges it is evident the enemy has been largely reinforced. With a glass they can plainly be seen working like beavers on their fortifications. There is now but little doubt that, such was the rout and stampede of the enemy, had we followed them up, the lastman of them would have crossed the Tennessee. As it was, a large portion did cross, the enemy burning several houses at the time, umong the rest the Spencer Hotel, formerly owned by Crutchfield. But as we did not follow, they Tec ossed and went to work fortifying them- selves, There seems to be a fatality attending alilour victories, as someliow we are always pre- vented from following them up. Our cavairy have crossed the Tennezeee river, and we ex- pect soon to hear of their annoying the enemy and cutting off his supplies. It is said we are preparing to sheli the enemy outof Chattanos- ga by getting guns and mortars in position that willreachthem. ButI do not think this will avail us much withont a fiank movement is made at the same time, co that we can gain his rear, or else, should we even succeed in sheil- ing him out, he will be able to return the com- piiment from the opposite heights across the Tiver. It is reported that Gen. Longstreet was ALF anxious to follow up our victory, and so ad- vised Gen. Bragg, but it seems that after it was agreed to do so, from some cause—want of sup- ples and other circumstances—the pursuit was abandoned. It is impossible to tell at what moment the conflict will be resumed, but from present in- dications it will be several days yet. Every day of deiay we give the enemy an additional adyuntage over us. From Northern Virginia. From the Richmond Dispatch, Oct. 17.} The accounts from Northern Virginia con- tinne encouraging. Passengers by the Central train last night bronght down a report that a portion of our forces had cut off the retreat of the Yankee General Sedgwick, and irterrupt- ed his whole corps. The statement is that Sedgwick became separated from the main body of the enemy’s forces, and struck of in the direction of Occoquan, where he was met by our troops, who had previously reachea that point. Another report states that Gen. Ewell hada severe fight with the bat Ms Bristoe Station, on the Orange and ale: ia railroad. Little is known of the result of this fight, except that ihe enemy were defeated, and rumor says lost 3,006 men in priconers. istoe is the first sta- tion sonth of Manassas Junction, and about four miles from that point. From the Richmond Examiner, Oct. 15.} ¢ have no authentic intelligence of mili- tary operations in Northern Virginia, and bu: few reports. The hostile armies have receded from &Ni points with which we have railroad cemmunication, snd consequently news reaches USTAY TS RTGS AP AR MERUS ABar, ana a report prevailed yesterday evening that Ewell had Teached Manaseas Junction, and there cap- tured the principal depois of the enemy’s com- missary and quartermaster steres. A cavalry fight is reported to have taken place at Warrenton on Monday, in which we beat the enemy and took 700 prisoners. There is also x report that we bave captured three railroad trains beyond the Rappahan- neck, Ninety of our men, wounded in the recent cavalry fights near Culpeper Court House, were brought to this city yesterday morning. As yet, there seems to have been no infantry fighting, though the cavalry, fighting moetiy With horse artillery, haye been pretty consid- erably engaged. The Cavalry Fight at Warrenton. A letter hes been received from an officer of high rank in Gen. Lee’s army, giving some de- tails of the cavalry fightat Warrenton on Mor- day. Our cavalry, we are glad to learn, be- haved very handsomely, actually charging upon the enemy repeatedly. We took seven hundred prisoners with their accoutrements. The writer does not mention the loss of either side in killed and wounded. ‘This ie, m eevera! respects, the most impori- ant victory. Its moral effect upon the retre: ing foe must be considerable, ond while the loss of seven hundred horses is a serious disaster to them, itisa most timely and valuable ac- cession to us. The horses are much more yal- uable to us and much more needed than the prisoners. From the same letter to which we are in- debted for the above information, we learn that Lee has. from day to day, endeavored to bring Meade te a general engagement, but that the latter shrirks away on every occasion and avoids the conflict, The Size of Meade's Army. Citizens of Culpeper say that Meade, daring bis occupation of that place, issued daily one hundred thousand rations From thisit would appear that Meade bas an immense multitude of men, but the material is bad. He has men, not soldiers ; fellows who, though possessing much stemach for rations. have litle for fight- ing. This is proved conclusively by the flight of Meade before our forces If he felt he coula have relied upon two-thirds of his troops,-he would scarcely have permitted himself to be chased forty miles without once showing fight. From Northern Virginia. [From the Richmond Examiner, Oct. 16.} Gur trains on the Orange and Alexandria railroad now run to the i Tiver— to Rappahannock Station. Persons who left that station on Wednesday evening report that A. P. Hill was hotly engaged with the enemy ali thatday at Warrenton Springs, and that heavy firing was heard in that direction all day. Warrenton Springs are some twelve miles north of Rappahannock Station, and eighteen or twenty southwest of Manassas Junction. It was at mock Fepurted at Rappahas: that Hill had taken thirteen hundred prison- ere. Thre hundred and fitty prisoners were brought to this ae. yesterday, and severalhun- dred more are at drdonevilie awaiting trans- portation. Passengers who reached here last evening from Url peper, siate that continual cannonading is going on4n the direction of Warrenton.
