Among the structures now going up in that part of the city, a prominent one is the fine new chureh edifice of Ryland Chapel, and which replaces the old, dilapidated building of that name. The design is tasteful, neat, appr priate, and though mere “gingerbread work” has been eschewed, it will, when comple‘ed, be both elegant and comfortabl:; pleasant to the €)¢@ Ang sstisiactory to the judgment. The building will be heatéd by furnaces. The front ot the building is of pressed brick, with rusticated bisement. Messrs. Wise & Callahan do the brick work; im the wood work; and J. Veihmeyer the brown stone work. ‘The work is being pressed torward with as much rapidity as due Tevard to solidity wiii permit, and will be nnder roof, it is expected, by the Isto: November. This evening, DEAR SIk i explaiing to you the unhappy affair to which | Bight will be double, including, besides the @mimb: rof your family aud myselfare parties, | 2hove-named play, the comody of My Precious is called for, I address you these lines for that | Betsy. purpose, fearing that acuons of mine which | Were dictated by the mostfriendly feelings and | delicate sense of honor, have neen laid belore you in colors which would make them appear criminal. About one year since I was introdaced by Mrs Creecy to a family, one of the lady mem- bers of Which wasin the habit of spending much of her time at Mrs. Creecy’s rooms, and upon me the honor of seeing her home usually | fell. One evening, while going to Mrs. Cree- | cy’s for that purpose, I met the lady on the streei, and she told me she was in search of a | hair biaid, and asked me if I kuew where she could procure one. I referred her to my bar- ber’s w ife,a Mre. Aliot, and she requested me | to accompany her there. 1 did so; and, when We arrived at Mrs. Altiot’s door, I, knowing that the store was smull, and thinking she might havea delicacy aboutarranging her hair | before me, proposed to wait outside nntil she finished; but she insisted on my going in, I did so,and Mre. Alliot and her husband came to ‘Wait upon us; and while Alliot was in a back room getting more braids, the lady in whose | company 1 was concealed in the pocket of her cloak suine of the braids which had been first shownher. This act was seen by Mra. Alliot, | ewho informed her husband of it, and he, oa returning to the room where we were, seized | the braids which the lady had taken by a por- tion of them, which she had left unconcealed, and drew them trom her pocket. My consternation aud tiorror at this be “better imagined than cescribed, but the lady was in no way affected by it, but, edully and without even a blush mantiing her cheek, Waiked from the store, caHing for me to fol- ‘low. Net even believing the evidence of my own eyes, I turned to Aliot and demanded an explanation, and he accused me of being an —omple of the ludy who attempted to rob him. J explained to, him that I knew her to be | @ lady of good fumily, and not to speak of the -affair: and that if he was.a loser in uny way I would recoumperse him forit. I then turned towaids the lady, and at the moment I hardly -kuew what todo, My first thought was to up- braid her with the act, and leave ber on th spot; but my second wus that I should, for her | own good, Intorm her mother of the affair, and | With this intention I accompanied Ber home; | but when I saw her mother, I could not bring | my heart to wound her through the failings of ‘her child, as 1 knew my narration of the affair would, and I therefore buried it in my own | besom; and although I wus very constant in | my visits to her family, I never once, in any j manner alluded to it until near theeve of my | departure from the city, when, unfortunately, while iu Conversation with hcr sister, and for the purpose of refuting a charge of a very del- {| icate pature which she brought against me in | relation to the lady in question, I was led to ; Mention the circumstance, an act which I now j very much regret. | l assure you it grieves me from the very bot- | tom of my heart to be compelled to inform you , that the iady to whom | allude in this letter, | and who was guilty of the act, was your } daughter, Miss Wattie. But I tlame veither of them | dor their acts, for, no doubt, the one thinks I slandered her child, aud the other his sister; bat I think if they, or ary other person, would | & dispassionately take into consideration my pre- vious conduct towards the family, cuey conld not bring such @ charge against me, for I defy “py one to say that I have ever spoken of them in any man other than that of the highest esteem. Furthermore, I have been to your daughters for many months the same as a | brother, and have eyen insulted men for them, | and offered my own blood ter them when I thought it was called for: and I challenge them | Fr any one else to point to any time, place, or incident in which I have in any manner pre- sumed upon or took advantage of the familiarity which has existed between us.
