The Is tifying epposite Brad; epert— Position believed to be Im- R pregnable. Crxcinnatr, Oct. 5—The Commercial has the following dispatch: Lovisvit1x, Oct. 5.—Four or five thousand Rebel cavalry, under Wheeler, with artillery, attacked McMinnville on Saturday afternoon, ca; turing the town and garrison, consisting of the 4th Tennessee infantry. Our forces were without artillery, and the town without de- fenses or fortifications. The Rebels burned a train of care and destroyed the railroad and telegraph. They are believed to be advancing on Manchester. Several prominent Union men are supposed to have been captured. Part of the sume force destroyed a train of two hundred wagons on Friday, between Bridge- port and Chattanooga, and captured an am- Munition train of twelve w: Portions of rebel cavalry are scattered the road near the south ot Murfreesboro’, de- signing to destroy the railroad and telegraphic ceommunicaticn, capture stockades, &c. Our troops are closely pursuing them. A number of surgeons and nurses reached here to-day, from Nashville and Bridgeport. Large numbers were at the latter place, unable to go to the front for lack of trans; ion. There are how more surgeons at Chattanooga than are needed. . The rebels have fortified the mountain side opposite Bridgeport, and on Saturday threw a tew chelis atthe workmen engaged in repair- ing railroad bridges across the river. Our Pickets occupy the island in front of Bridge- cee ind constantly exchange shots with rebel pickets, One of our pickets, belonging to an Indiana regiment, was killed on Friday. No more pas- senger trains left Nashville for Ohattanooga. Small bands of rebels are hovering about the raiiroud from Nashville to the front, but euch measures have been taken that they will not succeed in effecting any important damage to ony communications. The severe beating given them on Saturday, at Murfreesboro’, ty Col. McUcok, will probably end all attempts of the kind for the present. All points en the line of communication are now guarded by & force sufficient to repel any attack. There ig every reason to believe that the present position of Rosecrans is impreguable, PROM THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC. [Associated Prees Dispatch.) WasHincton, Oct. 7.—Accounts from the army of the Potomac represent that the provost marshal general has recently seized the mer- ebardise and persons of sutl-rs for infractions of the regulations concerning trade within the lines, and for attempting to bribe the subordi- nate provost agents. The latter offense wil! be summarily penphed, and the effects of the of- fenders confiscated. Some changes have recently been madein the locations of the corps, put nothing indicating immeditte active operations. Conscripts in large numters are arriving. Those yesterday include about 900 from New York and Vermont. Surgeon George R. Johnson, late medical in- spector of the Army of the Potomac, has been relieved from duty at his own request, and transferred to the Middle Department. It is reported that an execution, by hanging, will take place in the Second Corps within a few days. The victim is mamed Armstrong, originally a private in the 72d Pennsylvania Regiment, but subsequently transferred to Rickets’ battery, from which he deserted and formed a gang ef guerrillas, who for a long time committed depredations on the sutlers’ trams in the vicinity of Fairfax Court House, and was supposed to belong to Moseby’s com- mend. When captured he had on a rebel major’s uniform, and his wardrobe showed that he had several other suits of disguise in reserve. It is said that he several times entered our lines, and once or twice went into his old battery. Baldwin, who was sent to the Army of the Cumberland by the State Central Committee, to distribute State and eto 4 tek- ets among the Ohio ents, reached Uincin- nati October 4th, havi Sunday, the 20th uit. telligence. The army was in excellent spirits, strongly intrenched, not at all disorgani and confident of its ability to repel the foe should an assault be made upon their position. The men were in nowise disheartened by the result of the fight on Chickamauga Creek. They seemed to think, considering the odds against which ex é fought, and the purpose for which the rebels fought, that Bragg was substantially defeated. Themen did not talk as though defeat had ever entered their imaz- inatione. On expressing to the General the fears felt for the safety of the army at the Nortb, andhis in- ability to hold Chattanooga, Gen. Rosecrans re- plied ‘by stating that he had taken up quarters at Chattanooga and intended to stay there, and that hc was in no such danger as was apprehended.
